"I will just go by quickly since I see you're all on the edge of your seats," Jana said, while pulling out multiple pieces of paper, and began flipping over the ripped pieces of paper. "Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive…Alive. Ta-da." Jana placed the paper back into the small box.
Now Betsy was more anxious and Kaleb was relieved. Not only has her family never agreed on anything, but the fact that everyone wasn't a bit surprised by the results, astonished her to the point she took a few steps back. 'This was planned. They made it so obvious as well. Is this why Jaques left? This wasn't his plan, it was too simple and basic. He probably made the first plan and somebody else made plan B. Probably Jaques' Betsy pondered to herself worried if the results were just a lie or they were safe. Betsy's thoughts were abruptly interrupted when Kaleb made a demand towards the family.
"Now that the voting system is settled, I also want you to stop the Bunny Storm right now." Kaleb heavily demanded, "And I don't even wanna see even a gust of wind and snow while I'm around"
Betsy was speechless, she couldn't think of the words to describe the rubbish coming out of Kaleb's mouth.
The nonsense made the mother chuckle a bit, she found it amusing how a child was ordering the Gasyer family around."Well… I don't see why not?" Jana asked.
Once again Betsy saw that no one was shocked. She couldn't help herself but ask since the situation was making her tense. "What is going on?"
Now everyone was shocked, even Kaleb. They thought Betsy wouldn't notice how everything was going their way. They were all puzzled, They were looking around as if this wasn't part of the script. Danny of course was getting impatient from all the waiting and the silence. He tightened his hand and his face was turning red. It was like he was ready to explode."OH, MY GOD!" Danny had enough of the act and was impatient as ever." WE KNOW YOU CAN STOP THE STORM YOURSELF AND DESTROY EVERYTHING WE WORKED HARD FOR! THAT IS WHY WE ARE TRYING TO KILL YOU, WE CAN HAVE TEN TIMES MORE POWER THAN YOU HAVE RIGHT NOW BY EATING YOUR WENDIGO'S HEART!"
Betsy was right, they had an ulterior motive this whole time. Everything was silent and everyone felt exposed except for Cassie who felt the right to explain herself. Cassie was the type of person to always try to keep her image clean even if the other person could see right through it. "That's not true at all!" Cassie retorted Danny's explanation, her eyes sparkly and glassy ready to burst into tears "I would ne-"
"Save me the melodrama, Cassie."Finch blurted out. "I’m sick and tired of your act.”
“I’m no longer living with you guys. I'm going to live with Kaleb."Betsy whispered shyly before anyone could add anything.
"That kid doesn't even have a house," Dasher said.
"Or any friends," Finch added
"What the," Kaleb remarked. "You ain't coming with me you're on your own."
"Oh okay," Betsy said in a disappointed tone of voice.
"That's fine by us sweety you can run around the village for however long you want," Jana said with a loving smile and waved her daughter goodbye. "The storm should be over by now."
Betsy and Kaleb stood still at their spot unsure whether she was lying or not. They didn't move in the slightest. Thinking it was a trap they waited for one of them to make the first move and they did. The first one out the door was Danny, then Milles was next still trapped in his daydreaming, and then following suit was Joshua, then Cassie, and following her was Bella, and finally Finch with Dasher. Asa stayed behind and so did Jana and Xander, it looked like they wanted to have a chat with her. Betsy and Kaleb followed shortly after. Once Betsy had a look outside it was nothing she had ever imagined. This was her first time being able to see.
She could see the white and cold snow under her boots and bits of snow falling on her gloves. It was beautiful. Once she had enough of looking at the snow she looked over the huge village. Buildings stacked upon buildings, but yet the streets seem to be desolate and empty; only small broken pieces of branches and leaves from the trees accompanied it with snow. From far away Betsy notices a small and strange figure hidden deep in the snow. She sprints towards the mysterious object, and Kaleb quickly follows not wanting to be alone with the mass murders.
Betsy finally found the object she fell on her knees and checked what it was; it was a bunny ice statue. She started digging through the snow at a slow pace and cautiously took out the item from the snow. The statue was just beautiful and divine; it looked like it was for decoration. It was clear almost like glass, and finely detailed. Betsy puts down the freezing ice statue steadily, admiring it from on top of the snow.
Kaleb finally reached where Betsy was; she was next to an abandoned building with a tree fallen over it. By the time Kaleb arrived, he was out of breath, and having a hard time breathing with his injuries made matters worse. While gasping for the cold icy air through his lungs he stares at Betsy's new-found treasure. Kaleb stares at it in disbelief. Betsy notices Kaleb's reaction to the sculpture.
"Isn't it pretty?" Betsy asks with a puzzled look on her face. "What's wrong with it?"
"Are you dumb or something?" Kaleb questions her like she's been living under a rock. "These statues are made when someone dies during the storm."
"Who makes them?" Betsy wanted to know if this was some kind of ritual that the villagers make for their loved ones.
"The storm does you bonehead beast" Kaleb once again insults Betsy's lack of knowledge of the outside world. "Once an individual is on the brink of death because of starvation. The storm sends bunnies into their homes. Only those who are close to death can see them. The starved individual will try to devour the bunnies and rip them apart. That is when the rabbit gets angry and ferocious. It turns the person into a bunny statue and leaves them out in the storm."
"But the storm didn't even last a whole day." Betsy protested. "How could they turn into a bunny if they didn't even starve yet?"
"That doesn’t matter now,” Kaleb responded in confusion. "I'll expose you and your whole family. How they are a bunch of monsters killing everyone in the village."
"Alright, I won't stop you then," Betsy said while shrugging her shoulders.
"What?" Kaled asked with a puzzled look on his face. "Fine then I won't show you any mercy."
Kaleb suddenly ran off in a rush leaving Betsy on the floor with her statue. She wasn't a bit curious about where he had to go instead she began planning her next move. While thinking about where to, live, eat, and sleep on the cold freezing snow her eyelids started feeling heavy and tired. she was dozing off, her head was bobbing left to right as she peacefully was falling into a deep and sudden sleep. Not even ten minutes went by and she felt a sharp pain in her ribs. The impact launched her into the abandoned house she was sitting next to.
She had gone flying through the house's crabby wooden walls, and snow, and wood went flying inside. Her eyes were wide in pain, but she made sure not to show any emotion. She was currently inside the abandoned house. She had pieces of small wood on her and snow on top of her head. She looked at the hole in the wall, where she was launched through from a distance. She couldn't find the culprit. She then looked around the house. It was dark and snow filled the floor. She then became very observant, she looked at the finest details around the house; 'The walls look like it's been scratched up by a wolf. No no. Maybe a bear. There are little pieces of wood in from me a big one behind and some to my right. There are footprints next to the door and there's also a picture frame on the walls. The furniture looks like it's been torn up… footprints?'
She described her surroundings in her head making sure that her eyes weren't a distraction. This way she now realized that she wasn't alone in the house. Someone swiftly entered through the door, when she was staring at the hole on the wall. Her sense of smell was now alert, she now knew who was currently in the house. She didn't move an inch. She still sat exactly where she landed. She also thought it was unnecessary to use her ears to know where they were attacking next.
Betsy ducks as Joshua throws a flying kick toward her head. The dodge was unexpected for Joshua, forgetting that Betsy was no longer blind. Betsy usually uses her sense of smell and hearing sparingly since it becomes overwhelming. Joshua doesn't let up for even a second the moment he turns around from the kick Betsy is long gone. She had run away. There was no way she could ever beat her eldest brother. She had to train more to even be on his level.
'He let me go,' Betsy thought to herself. 'He probably just wanted to see what level I'm on now. I need to watch my back more from now on.' Betsy was trudging herself through the snow scared and tired. She decided to follow Kaleb's scent. She could no longer remain alone with her murderous family on the loose.
As she tracks Kaleb down some villagers finally come out curious to see if the storm stopped. She watches as the villagers one by one come out to greet the tranquil environment. She slogs on glancing at the people's expressions, coming out of their homes afraid to astonish. The silence was broken by cheers and tears of joy. The cheering and celebrating could be heard from every home. More and more people came out to join in the jubilation. Joy, happiness, and relief filled the air.
She couldn't help but smile. That small relief and happiness turned into anxiety about what would happen next. It was only a matter of time until the Gasyer family came up with a plan to hunt her down. They would most likely try to kill Kaleb first. The thought made her sweet smile turn bitter filled with guilt.
