On her way to find Kaleb, she comes across an old lady passing through with a rigid cart of baskets. The cart seemed as old as she was. The baskets inside the cart were weaved by hand and they had many different designs and patterns. Betsy was a bit curious about how she made them and stared at the baskets for a while before turning away. Before Betsy could even blink the old lady calls her over to help her drag it across the snowy floor. The snow prevented the frail old lady from crossing the snow-ridden road. Kaleb could also be in danger and possibly be killed if she doesn't find him.
The old woman was covered head to toe in layers with coats and gloves. She waved her hands up in the air calling for Betsy's attention. At first, Betsy was hesitant to help, afraid she'd mess things up. That is when some of the townspeople saw what was happening and began to murmur which made Betsy even more anxious to help.
"Is she going to help her or not?"
"It's just an old lady."
"Why doesn't she help out? Is she shy?"
"I've never seen that girl around here."
"C'mon, what's wrong with her?"
Betsy finally gave in to the people's demands and helped the old lady. With uneasiness she walks up to the senior with her hands behind her back, fidgeting her thumbs together. She doesn't look the elderly woman in the eye, instead, she turns her attention to the snow under her feet. The woman saw this and gave out a small chuckle. If she'd known Betsy was shy she wouldn't have called her over. But the way she was eyeing the cart seemed like she wanted to help out.
"I'm sorry to disturb you, young lady. I truly am. But could you do me a small favor and help me out with this tedious cart? I'm trying to sell some of these baskets before the storm starts again." The woman explained. "My name is Bailey, Bailey Hay. But some people call me Bay short for Bailey. What's your name?"
"Uh, my name?" Betsy answered, unsure of herself. She had suddenly forgotten her name for a second and remembered it straight away. "It's Betsy Ga- Gallico. Betsy Gallico ma'am."
Betsy had lied to the old lady about her last name, at first she was hesitant to tell her but changed her mind soon after. She didn't want anyone to know she was related to the Gasyer family, because one day she promised herself to expose them for who they were and didn't want her name to be anywhere near them. Betsy stood there awkwardly remembering she also made another promise before. She didn't want her life to be like her family whose main foundation was deception. Soon after she regretted lying to the old lady.
"Hello there Betsy I was just wondering if you could help me push the cart." The old lady asked. "These bones don't work like they used to, y'know."
"I understand," Betsy replied to the old lady with a pitiful look on her face looking right at the floor. "But I can't right now,"
Bailey misinterpreted Betsy's concern; she thought that the young girl was just being lazy and didn't want to help her out because it would be too much work. Bailey tutts while shaking her head in disapproval, she raises her hand masked with four gloves and shakes it around with her pointer finger sticking out. Betsy felt pity for her because she felt like Bailey picked the wrong person for the job, but Bailey misunderstood her expression for lazy behavior. While selling the baskets, Bailey made sure to lecture her about idleness and how being inactive is unsuitable for young ladies. While Bailey lectured Betsy about how pathetic laziness is, Betsy made a great effort to sell all the baskets so she could get rid of the old lady once and for all.
Betsy was concentrating on selling all the baskets so she could finally leave. Bailey was making a lot of sales because of Betsy's fast-moving feet. But she still had to work on her people skills. Everything was going great, so great that Betsy forgot about Kaleb's scent and didn't hear him protesting about the Gasyer family. Betsy can hear things from miles away but sometimes it can be overwhelming so she can dose down her abilities to concentrate on one thing at a time, and right now she was concentrating on the baskets and Bailey talking her ears off.
As Kaleb was coming closer to Betsy's location making a huge racket. Bailey finally saw Betsy's hardworking sales. Bailey was surprised that Betsy was almost done selling all the baskets that would've taken her five days to sell because of her age. She decided to give Betsy a small gist for all her hard work. She felt bad for scolding her the whole, time while she worked her tail off.
"Say?" The old lady spoke with a pitiful voice.
Betsy finally snapped out of it hearing Bailey's pitiful voice, Betsy finally listened to what Bailey had to say. Betsy didn't pay any attention to what Bailey said before, but now she was all ears.
"How about I buy you some new clothes and some food? You've earned that much since I'm not paying you." Bailey said with a smile on her face which couldn't be seen through all the clothes she was wearing.
"I'm not getting paid for this?" Betsy questioned Bailey with one raised eyebrow.
They both stared at each other with greedy eyes. They both expected the other person to talk and say something, anything. But nothing happened until Bailey said something.
"Well of course that's how you will be buying your clothes and food hahaha," Bailey said laughing.
"That’s not fair," Betsy whispered to herself. She was pouting about the selfish deal.
"What's that?"
"Not-"
Before Betsy could even answer she heard Kaleb shouting from a distance. Betsy and Bailey were both curious about the commotion, so they decided to follow it. When they finally arrived they could see Kaleb and two others shouting with boards.
"THE GASYER WILL KILL US ALL"
"THEY ARE A BUNCH OF MONSTERS"
"RUN WHILE YOU STILL CAN"
Nobody bought it. The Gasyer family was the village savior after each storm. The group of kids went on and on about how they would all die at the hands of the Gasyer family. But no one believed them. All the people could do was laugh it off as a joke because those three were known as the "Jokesters". Kaleb was the most known to be a mischievous kid who stole from people's homes. The girl, Mira, was known to be smart and calculating; she was the planner. Finally, her older brother, Royse, is known to be a liar and manipulator.
The trio would always wreck chaos and havoc around, but to their surprise Kaleb was alive. The siblings had a warm and cozy home with both of their parents, but Kaleb had nobody. The siblings would usually hide Kaleb in their house, this time their parents caught him and cast him out into the storm.
Soon the crowd started to get bored of the three troublemakers and started to throw snowballs and stick at them. The trio are persistent and continue their rant until Kaleb's eyes catch Betsy amongst the crowd. He tightened his small fist until his nail dug harshly into his skin. He’s furious. He began shouting even louder trying to convince the people until the crowd grew tired of them. The multitude of people began diminishing in numbers until no one else was left except the three kids, Betsy and Bailey.
"What are you hooligans doing?!" Bailey's rusty voice shouted from the top of her lungs. "Have you all lost your minds? You could’ve been killed talking about the villager’s best hunters! Could've given me a heart attack!"
Bailey smacked each of them with a stick, nearly giving Betsy a heart attack with the abrupt attack.
Kaleb's patented frustration had finally escaped. "She’s a monster to Bay!!
"Oh shut it kids these days let their imagination run wild not even knowing what bullying is." Bailey started lecturing him. "Next time you decide to lie to the whole village I'll show you the real meaning of a monster."
Kaleb decided to retreat and apologize to Betsy, afraid of getting another beating from Bailey. Kaleb's revolution was far from over; he had to think things through. He decided he would be back not only for Betsy's head but for her entire family as well. The trio left defeated, losing the battle but not the war.
"Now, where were we?" Bailey asked hoping she would forget
"You were about to give me money," Betsy said.
"Oh, fine" Bailey replied in disappointment. She rolled her eyes while giving her the money.
Betsy waved the greedy old lady goodbye and was on her way to nowhere. She had nowhere to go and nowhere to live. She was certainly not going back to her family who were probably plotting her demise right this moment. She couldn't go to Kaleb, because of how much he currently hates her. She finally thought of how she had to fight her own family sooner or later thinking about it made her shiver.
She finally decided to head into the wilderness hoping nobody could find her, especially her family. Being in a public area could attract her family, but they would never attack her in public. If she heads off to the forest her family would probably take longer to find her and once they do, they'd attack with full force. Betsy wanted to train by herself to at least have a fighting chance to beat her family by herself. The first thing she wanted to do was beat her older sister Bella. Bella is the 11-year-old who was always on Cassie's side. The one thing Bella was good at was jumping great distances.
At a very young age, Bella could climb and jump onto any tree no matter the height. She could easily leap a rocky mountain and reach the top with no hands, and that was exactly what Betsy was going to train for. At first, Betsy thought it would be easy to copy Bella's abilities and hone them better than her, but it was more difficult than she’d anticipated. The first practice she tried to do was climbing an oak tree with no hands. She hypothesized that if she enhances her abilities in human form then it'll become even stronger and easier to use in the Wendigo form.
She ventured deep into the ominous forest looking at every tree but not one satisfied her standards or needs. She was trying to find the tallest one that she could find. Until she came across a tree that stood out from the rest; it had yellow paint splashed on its trunk. Betsy had finally found it. The tree was tall and robust, but creepy at the same time. It stood out the most because of its tall structure.
She tried to copy Bella's moves by just defying gravity and climbing up the tree but of course, she had failed. Once again she tried to climb the tree this time with a running head start. She sprinted up onto the tree, and got one foot on the trunk, then to two, three, four, and five. She fell back on the freezing snow head first. She continues to try for about eight more times and still falls flat on her back. Her highest score was getting 17 steps on the tree, but she continues to fall short. She had a long way to go to beat Bella at this rate.
While practicing Bella's moves, she noticed somebody's scent long ago through the forest. It wasn't anybody she had recognized like her family members, but it did smell familiar. She could hear their heavy breathing from miles away and yet, she paid no mind to the distraction. She continued practicing until the stranger began to get closer and closer, it was as if she was being followed. The individual couldn't be ignored any longer; it could be a threat or maybe the family had sent someone to spy on her. Though the person following her was no threat at all.
It was one of Kaleb's friends from the trio called the "Jokesters", it was the smart one from the group, the girl, Mira Fortuna. Mira was tracking down Betsy's footprints that she had carelessly left on the snow. If Betsy didn't want to be found she should get rid of all evidence of where she was going instead she had left a trail of footprints right to her location. As Mira came closer to her destination she heard a noise. It was the warcry of a wendigo and Mira was very familiar with it from Kaleb's story, yet she still had chills running down her spine.
Mira froze in her tracks, a cold sweat ran down her face. The fear coursing through her veins didn't stop her from following the tracks down the white snow.
Trembling with every step she took through the freezing woods. She picked up a stick and held it up close to her chest ready to fight any beast comes her way. Another roar could be heard from miles away and she could also smell a stench of blood. Kaleb told Mira, ‘If you hear the monster from far away, then it's closer than you think.’ Her hands were now trembling along with the stick, but she continued to follow the trail, ignoring the beast stalking her through the snowy woods. While following the tracks she began picking up the pace without even noticing. Her legs seemed to be running at this point while convincing herself that she didn't want to lose the trail. Her light jog turned into a full speed ahead as she pretended to race the monster creeping up at her.
After falling and tripping a few times she finally ended up finishing the trail. There she found Betsy eagerly trying to climb the tree. Mira could tell she was frustrated and exhausted. While climbing the tree she plugged her ears and nose with a bunch of pine leaves and cones. Mira stood there in complete confusion watching Betsy’s futile attempts to climb a tree with no hands. When she finally gathered her thoughts together she interrupted Betsy's absurd behavior.
"What do you think you're doing?" Mira asked in a demanding demeanor. "You should just leave the village if you know what's good for you!"
Betsy heard her but chose to ignore Mira's demand and threat. She pretended not to hear to avoid confrontation with a stranger. Mira kisses her teeth in annoyance, her jaw tightens and so does her fist. Without hesitation, Mira starts to walk up to Betsy stomping her feet deep into the snow. Betsy again tried to climb the tree and ended up flat on her back. Mira was now looking down at Betsy on the floor defeated by a simple tree.
With a puzzled look on her face, Mira asks. "What are you doing here?" She demanded an answer once again. "The Repeating Forest is dangerous, you know."
