"I'll go find Mira myself and rescue her without you guys," Betsy said unbothered. "And if she dies, blood will be on your hands."
Betsy hated confrontations, especially with people she barely knew. She spun herself around to run away from the boys before Royse said something.
"What was the deal you made with my sister?" He asked with a worried tone. He tried his hardest to hide his emotions.
"I would help her find any information on my family and she teaches me how to climb trees," Betsy said, hoping that she didn't have to rescue Mira by herself.
"You mean chipping," Kaleb added.
"I'll help you," Royse said.
Surprised, Kaleb turned to Royse with his jaw agape. He couldn't believe that he was willing to work with a monster like Betsy. Then again Kaleb and Royse searched and asked the whole town where Mira could be, but no one knew where she was. The last time anyone saw her was when she was heading to the forest. Kaleb turned his attention back to Betsy. Royse had to come back with her sister home before midnight so his parents wouldn't have to worry.
Kaleb understood Royse's predicament and his decision to trust Betsy to find his sister. Kaleb then nodded agreeing to go with Betsy to find his friend Mira. They wandered around the town in awkward silence. Royse was too afraid to ask Betsy any questions which made him fidgety and concerned. The long uncomfortable walk of silence was interrupted by Kaleb's question.
"You're trying to kill us aren't you?" Kaleb asks accusingly in a low growling tone.
"No," Betsy answered in a monotone voice
"Yes, you are"
"No, I'm not."
"Yes, you are!"
"No-" Betsy had made a sudden stop which almost made Royse bump into her.
Kaleb didn't hesitate to pull out his gun and point it right at her head. The sudden movements made Royse falter back a few steps. Royse and Kaleb just began to notice how excluded they were from the village. They were right in the middle of the abandoned side of town. Nothing but ruined houses and trees were there and just by a few blocks was the forest.
"They are close," Betsy said. "We need to split up now."
"No," Kaleb said with anger seething through.
"They are keeping her somewhere over here but I can't tell where with the scent of blood covering all these house walls," Betsy explained calmly even though she was panicking internally. "I'll distract one of them by running into the forest. There'll be one more coming after you. They can smell you from miles away so you'll have to scent yourself with blood as well. You can hide your scent but you can't hide your heartbeats and footsteps. So don't stay in one spot for too long.
Royse heard and understood every single thing that came out of Betsy's mouth. Kaleb heard everything as well but came through one ear and came out through the other. Kaleb followed Betsy's directions before to some extent, but in the end, it was all a trap to kill him. He didn’t trust her, but he trusted his best friend’s decisions, Royse.
“Alright, here I have something to give you guys” Royse pulled out a weird-looking gadget from his pocket.
“Oh that thing I stole it from that farmer,” Kaleb said
The gadget was built like a stick with two holes in each end. Royse had 4 of them in his hand and gave one to Betsy and Kaleb. They both looked at it confused and twirled it around their hands. Kaleb looked at Royse with a disappointed look on his face and clenched the gadget furious for wasting their time. Before Kaleb could say anything, Royse read Kaleb’s facial expression and explained the weird-looking thing before Kaleb could complain.
“Before any of you complain and say something stupid let me explain what you need to do with it,” Royse said while taking a glance at Kaleb. “ I overheard the farmer talking to Bailey that someone had stolen his forest merchandise.”
“Wait what?” Kaleb interrupted Royse’s explanation, hearing that the item he stole was from the Repeating Forest which was extremely valuable.
Royse ignored Kaleb and continued, “This thing is called a whistle. I heard it’s extremely loud. You blow air on the thin side of the whistle and it makes a noise on the other end. When we rescue Mira we will be running towards Betsy so she can get rid of the other Wendigo. We will blow our whistle when we find her and you blow yours for a long time so we can follow the noise.”
“But I heard that the Repeating Forest alters noises so make sure not to go through the trees with paint on them,” Kaleb said
“I won’t,” Betsy replied while nodding her head.
They both ran their separate ways. Kaleb and Royse were tasked to find Mira through some of the destroyed houses. That side of the village was abandoned a long time ago and the reasons were unknown. Some say that people went crazy and ran inside the Repeating Forest. Others say that they were all eaten by one man who saved them just to eat them later on. The rumors of the abandoned side of the village were enough to keep villagers away from there.
Kaleb and Royse split ways to find Mira much faster and more efficiently. Before parting ways, Kaleb gave Royse his gun since he wasn’t a very stealthy person after all. Royse was just a liar who could bluff his way through any situation he could. Kaleb was a stealer who could sneak into anyone’s homes to take their belongings. Kaleb and Royse made sure to search every square inch of each house they went into, being as quiet as possible and making sure not to stay in one spot for too long. Kaleb so far had already searched eleven houses while Royse had only searched five of them.
The two boys searched the houses one by one making sure not to leave a single spot unscathed. Everything was calm and silent until a poignant smell hit Kaleb’s nose and then Royse. Kaleb was far too familiar with the wretched smell. Royse only heard about the tale in a descriptive detail from Kaleb, but it was a completely different story when you’re experiencing it yourself. Sweating like a man who just ran a marathon, both of the boys had one thing on their mind, ‘Where’s Betsy?’ While both of the boys were doubting the plan, Betsy was a distraction to one of the wendigos which made her nervous. She couldn’t beat a monster who was twice her size so her sole purpose was to buy time and get away safely for the others to join her.
Without a doubt, she could see that the plan had many holes in it which wasn’t able to completely cover them from danger, but she couldn’t think of anything good. She made sure to keep her distance from the village before turning herself into a wendigo. The anticipation of a surprise attack coming towards her at any moment made her frightful and anxious. She made sure to keep her composure and continued to walk endlessly until she got the signal. Unlike Betsy, Kaleb didn’t have a bone in his body to remain calm when they were playing hide and seek with a monster who could hear their every heartbeat.
It was easier for Royse to calm down because he currently had Kaleb’s weapon in his right hand. Royse continued to search the houses by first peeking through every door and then slowly entering them but he still had to move quickly. Kaleb also searched all the houses head to toe. Once he was finished searching for one he ran as fast as he could to the next house. Kaleb was getting tired by the second. He was running around like a headless chicken, because of the frightening situation he was in. He’s never been unarmed and if he has, he wasn’t in danger.
His heartbeat finally gave way for the beast to find him. Kaleb was just in the middle of running to the next house when the wendigo finally found him unarmed and tired. In a somewhat similar situation was Betsy, but this time she wasn’t one bit afraid of facing her opponent, and all they did was live in the sky daydreaming. She was facing her older brother, Milles.
He wasn’t even in his Wendigo form, he was just frolicking around and dancing while kicking the snow beneath his feet. Milles was playing around like a child without a care in the world. He has snow in his hand making a snow bunny. Betsy found Milles a bit odd. He never went after money, fame, or power, which always weirded Betsy out, and thought he was just an idiot who didn’t know anything about life. Milles hadn’t even noticed Betsy because of how enticed he was in his hallucinations. She turned around to walk away from her strange brother and turned back into a human until he suddenly called her.
“Hi, little sister!” Milles shouted with a smile of joy across his face.
Betsy sighed out loud in exhaustion. Milles never called Betsy by her name for some unknown reason, instead, he called her ‘little sister’. Betsy had her back towards him for a while until she finally turned around with a sullen look on her face. Milles neglected Betsy for as long she could remember, the only time he would talk to her was when he was disoriented and lost. He would ask her unnecessary questions nonstop, especially ones she didn’t know. They never had a conversation, only a question-and-answer type of talk.
“Milles?” Betsy asked with a disappointed tone in her voice. “Are you lost?”
“No, Actually I was looking for you,” Milles said cheerfully.
Without another word Betsy had bolted out of there scared to death. Betsy wasn’t the only one running for her dear life. Kaleb Quaker was quaking in his boots when he met eye-to-eye with a wendigo for the second time today. With every little single strength in his body, Kaleb ran to the house he was previously in before. The terrifying Wendigo of course chased after him not wanting him to get away. Kaleb aggressively slammed the house door open, almost causing it to break.
The ferocious beast couldn’t fit through the house door which only slowed him down. Once he noticed he couldn’t fit through the door in a quick haste he rammed over the door's walls. In a hurried and frightened moment, Kaleb exaggeratedly jumped over the weak floorboard almost letting the beast catch him with its huge claws.
Something did get caught which made Kaleb a bit relieved, but the fight was far from over. Kaleb had set a trap in the house, not only in that one but in every house he went into. The beast fell through the wooden floor into a basement that was filled with cotton. Kaleb’s panicked runs weren’t the only thing that made him tired but also all the traps he’d been setting up inside each house he went into. Kaleb had two rocks in his hands and started to clash them together to make sparks into the basement so the cotton could catch on fire, the plan had failed. The wendigo was climbing out of the basement at an abnormal speed, which made Kaleb back out of his hard-worked scheme.
Kaleb had already left the scene before the wendigo could get another glimpse of him. Kaleb’s hard work was all in vain and soon so were the other houses he set up with traps. Kaleb laced each house with a trap but they began to fail when the monster escaped through all of them, maybe because of how obvious and cliche it was. One house had a huge boulder over the door so if you opened it wide enough it would fall on your head. Another trap he made for the monster was a piece of string that was connected to the opposite side of the walls low somewhere near the ground. The string was supposed to make the monster fall but he just ripped it off while chasing Kaleb.
All the bobby traps that Kaleb had made were failing one by one. Both Betsy and Kaleb were running for their lives while monsters were just inches away from catching them. The only person looking for Mira was Royse. He had already heard all the commotion Kaleb was making on the other side of the abandoned village but he continued his successful search. He finally found Mira knocked out of the cold floor in an attic. He woke her up and headed out the door quietly.
The plan is finally coming into play, First, they find Mira, and then they blow the whistle to signal Betsy that they are ready to go somewhere safe. Betsy finds the right spot to hide everyone for a while and she blows the whistle and they follow the sound to find Betsy. It wasn’t foolproof but it was at least something.
Royse didn’t want to do that.
Betsy wasn’t ready to keep everyone safe when she was in danger herself. Milles chased after her like a mindless zombie in his human form. Betsy turned herself into a wendigo so she could run faster, but Milles was still tailing her easily through the deep snow. While speeding through the snow she saw trees marked with different types of paint from a distance. She had to go through the Repeating Forest and had no other choice but to go in.
Betsy runs inside the forest with Milles running right behind her. Betsy makes a sharp left attempting to lose him through the crowded trees and it works. Milles had mysteriously disappeared out of thin air when she lost sight of him passing a tainted tree. She had finally noticed her surroundings and every single tree she looked at had paint on them. She trekked through the deep snow that reached past her ankles. She started to walk in the direction she entered but to no avail, she couldn’t leave the forbidden part of the forest.
No matter how long she walked through the way she came from the trees forbid her an exit. She kept going and going slowly panicking in her head. She paused for a moment collecting herself before she went insane. She had to find a way out of the forest to rescue Mira, Royse, and Kaleb from the situation she put them in. Her thoughts were rudely interrupted by Milles who appeared out of nowhere.
“Oh Betsy, you can’t be here, it’s really hard to get out once you enter,” Milles told her with a concerned voice.
Betsy decided to move past a tree that blocked Milles and he then suddenly disappeared. Betsy finally understood that the forest had no sense of direction. If you go one way you’ll be miles away from your objective, only one question remains in Betsy’s head. How did Milles manage to find her? He wasn’t the best with directions. She knew for sure that Milles wouldn’t be able to find the forest's secrets and loopholes just by being smart.
There was something that Milles had that Betsy didn’t and she couldn’t quite put her finger in it, but it had to be something easy enough that everyone could do it or have. It wasn’t long before Milles was able to find her again quicker this time. Betsy once again tried the same trick to get behind a tree and the forest worked its magic. Once Betsy looked back where he was standing he was long gone. The forest had placed her in a completely different location from last time. She could do this all day, but she could be stuck inside the Repeating forest forever slowly turning insane as the days slowly go by without any exit or freedom.
