"Jane turned to Sarah as they strolled along the school corridor. 'What was Ashylene like before last year?' she asked curiously.
Sarah sighed and glanced out of the window, where she saw her sister and Dwayne heading to the school grounds, laughing and chatting.
'She used to be so insecure and shy,' Sarah said, feeling a pang of nostalgia. 'She had no confidence in herself at all.'"
"Sarah glared at her sister, who had let down their family with her incompetence.
'She's a disgrace and a failure,' she snapped, averting her eyes from Ashylene and Dwayne.
'And her power is about electromagnetism, right?' Jane inquired, as they walked by a group of girls who stood at the door of their classroom.
The girls quickly silenced themselves and stepped aside for them to pass.
'Yeah, but she's too pathetic to master it,' Sarah scoffed, as they arrived at their seats in the class."
"Jane looked at Sarah with concern as they sat on their seats and faced each other. 'Are you scared about the tournament next week, when you have to fight her?' she asked softly.
Sarah hesitated for a moment, feeling a twinge of fear. She locked eyes with Jane and said, 'No, I'm not. I can handle her power.'
Tanaka and Dane came into the class, carrying some chocolate bars they had gotten from a vending machine. Dane handed a bar to Jane and Sarah each.
'What's going on, guys? What are you chatting about?' Dane asked with a grin, as he sat down and joined them.
Jane unwrapped her chocolate bar and took a bite. She answered Dane casually, 'Oh, nothing. Sarah was just saying she'll kick Ashylene's butt next.'
Tanaka noticed Sarah's tense expression, even though she tried to hide it from Jane and Dane. She wondered, "Sarah, are you worried about what you overheard from the intel that father got?"
It was the day when Ashylene and Jane's parents met up. Ashylene's father had contacted the E.C.P (Heradal Chosen's Police), who dealt with the matters involving the chosen, including the Orime group, who were terrorists.
They had investigated the incident that Ashylene had reported to her parents which had happened when she was away in training.
Fortunately, Ashylene's attacker was already captured by the time and since he was one of the Orime''s minions who had fought with Ashylene and escaped he knew something. They had interrogated him for a night, but he had refused to talk.
Then they had brought in a chosen mind reader hired by Ashylene's father to help in the investigations, he then uncovered the terrorist's memories.
He had revealed that the Orime group wanted Ashylene not for her strength, but for something contained in her body and also her name was mentioned in their holy book, the book of The Elder Gods, the book MORI - S.
It was written by the greatest seer who worked under Oriname Mahire, the founder of the Orime group.
Sarah had heard the conversation between her father and the investigator he had called. After hearing what she had heard them discuss she had become very wary of her older sister Ashylene.
"Ashylene," Sarah thought, "What happened to you?" She was lost in her thoughts, not caring about Ashylene, but about what she might mean for their family.
"Hey, are you okay?" Jane and Dane asked Sarah, snapping her out of her trance. She looked at them with a fake smile on her face.
…
I asked Sandra, "You and Ashylene are close, right?" as we walked to the school grounds.
She smiled at me and said, "Yeah, Tinashe. She's my sister from another mother." She looked adorable.
I blushed and said, "Her sisters suck. We dodged a bullet by not being in their class.
They would bully you for sure."
Sandra pointed at Dwayne and Ashylene, who were laughing and talking. She said, "Sarah and Tanaka are twins, but not alike.
They look down on Ashylene for her power struggle. She's the first of her kind, but she had no mentor."
I was stunned and said to Sandra, "They're twins? That explains their age.
Ashylene trained for a year, so she's older, the only reason she is not a level ahead of us because she had a year off because of her training."
I looked at Ashylene, who was smiling happily. I said, "Her power is hard to master, huh?"
Sandra brushed her long brown hair with her left hand. It sparkled in the sun and she looked stunning.
She said, "It is. But she can handle it now."
I thought, "Damn."
I said to her, "Don't worry. She has us and you. She's not alone anymore."
Sandra smiled again as we joined Dwayne and Ashylene. I felt empty in my chest and thought how lucky she was to have people who loved her.
Unlike others who can talk about their abilities freely, I have to keep mine a secret.
My mother warned me that if I ever reveal them, I would put myself and the people I care about in harm's way. She said there are enemies who would stop at nothing to get their hands on me and my power.
