The Warlock's Wrath

Chapter Two (D)

Chapter Two (D)

Nov 19, 2023

Cathy watched the two men. Birds of the same feather, she thought. Even though Mesut did not delve into spirituality to the extent Abubakar did, both men had similar tastes and lifestyle which most times involved violence, having both grown up from violent backgrounds. They made a funny pair, the grandson of a racist, who was also a racist, associating remarkably well with a man from a race people like Mesut and his grandfather would have referred to as inferior. Mesut had come to realize that race or creed didn’t matter in the end but it helped keep up appearance and making people think he was racist had advantages with the associations he kept.

The next person to arrive was the Chinese billionaire, Zhu Hang. Emerging from a black Range Rover Sport SUV which he had driven from the apartment he kept in New York to the hotel, the billionaire looked rather uneasy as he stood at the entrance of the hotel, taking in the faces of the people who went by.

Zhu Hang was an averagely built man in his early forties. Dressed in a white shirt which he folded the sleeves up to his elbows over a plain black trousers, he looked very casual and very unlike the usual callers to the prestigious hotel. He absently handed the doorman the key to the SUV along with some hundred Dollar bills and cautiously made his way into the hotel. The doorman stared after him as he went. Nobody seemed to understand the Chinese man who betrayed no emotions, yet looked out of place and uncomfortable whenever he came to the hotel.

Zhu Hang hadn't always been rich. Raised on the streets of Mianyang, he had lived a rather hard-knock life before he came in contact with Robert Devore. The big American had been interested in the young man who knew how to get anything for anybody at the right price. He had signed up to Robert's deal without difficulty and had been rewarded with great wealth, which had made him the owner of one of the biggest computer firms in the whole of China. He controlled stakes in many firms all over the world, and like the two big men upstairs, he also maintained ties with the underworld, in his case, the notorious and dreaded Chinese Triad, through which he maintained a strong hold in the Chinese business environment along with his numerous contacts in top positions with the Chinese government. He had been instrumental to getting the government to sell the ancient temple to the brotherhood, which now served as their own temple.

He took the stairs rather than the elevator. Zhu Hang was a man ever conscious of his security, despite the promise of invincibility to human attacks assured him when he made the deal. He had grown up being very conscious of his surrounding and that had kept him alive for so long, even before meeting Robert Devore, and such habits, despite the best promises of safety, are not easily abandoned. He always carried a handgun and rarely told anyone where he was at any time, especially when he was travelling alone like he was doing now. He never felt safe outside China and even in China he was still very careful. He was very aware that he had developed so many enemies in the course of doing business within and outside China and was always on the lookout for a hired assassin sent by any of his enemies after him.

As he reached the third floor, he was sweating a bit from climbing the stairs, something he was not accustomed to except when he came for the meetings at the hotel. He rarely attended his martial arts classes anymore even though his trainer was always paid for practically doing nothing.

He followed the same procedure as the other people had done and was soon inside the suite where he felt a bit relaxed. He knelt before Cathy and kissed the ring then, barely acknowledging the other men in the room, he went to sit at the far end of the table facing Ruud. The man's expressionless face made the movie star more and more uncomfortable.

The U.A.E billionaire, Amie Meiter, whose affiliation with the brotherhood had restored him after he squandered his family's fortunes, and the Hollywood actress, Carol Pike, a one-time waitress in a small town diner before Karl Finch got Robert to recruit her and granting her wish of becoming an internationally acclaimed Hollywood actress arrived last of all.

Cathy hated the snobbish and mousy Carol Pike most of all. Even though Karl Finch had been wrong when she so readily joined ranks against him, Cathy knew all about the actress' sexual escapades with Karl, and the stories of her numerous flirting and divorces were common news in the tabloids. Sometimes she wondered why she was still a member of the supreme council, but since Lucifer had not ordered her removal, Cathy did nothing about kicking her out, something she would have done with great pleasure.

Everybody in the room also seemed to share Cathy's idea of the actress as they barely acknowledged her presence while she made her way to a vacant chair, carrying her poodle which she always went everywhere with. Cathy had once threatened to kill the dog if it messed up the suite and the dog now wore a custom designed diaper whenever she was coming for meetings at the suite.

With everyone seated, Cathy left the bureau, where she had not moved from since she arrived, and made her way to the head of the table. Everyone got to their feet and waited for her to sit down before they took their seat once again. Cathy produced a staff from behind the chair and laid it on the table. It was the same staff used by all the previous leaders of the brotherhood which she had taken from Karl Finch when they killed him years ago. At the sight of the staff, all the other members produced heavy gold necklaces, all bearing an identical type of pendant, and placed them around their necks. It was a sign that the meeting had commenced.

“I'm glad you could all make it today,” Cathy finally began. She had placed her hand with the ring on the table as she spoke. It was a posture she had always liked whenever she was addressing the other council members. “However this is not a social call, as you all know. I received a message from our Lord and Master, and he had some troubling news to pass on to us. The extent of the threat, which even our Lord and Master does not know, is what has been bothering me ever since then, and he's almost certain that even the Hosts of Heaven are aware of impending danger and they too seem not to know what is going on.”

“That sounds ridiculous,” Abubakar interjected without any formality. He always did that and she had learnt to accommodate him without creating a scene. “How could the Hosts of Heaven not know what is going on or whatever the danger is? Lucifer might not know, that's understandable, Heaven shields some secrets from him, but for Heaven not to know it's quite hard to believe that. Maybe, it's Armageddon and Lucifer has not been informed of it by those upstairs.”

“I asked and the messenger seems positive that it is not Armageddon and trust me, if it were Armageddon, we'll be the first to know!” Cathy said. Her voice was almost a snap. “Besides, our Lord and Master maintains a close tie with some members of Heaven, despite the fact that he has been cast away by God, he is still one of them and he is positive about it. Whatever it is has gotten Heaven and Hell troubled and messengers have been sent about to get everyone ready for whatever may happen. I was instructed to guard what I have in my possession.”

“The book,” Mesut exclaimed sitting up. His eyes focused on the woman at the head of the table. “Karl Finch. Is he back? Does he have anything to do with this?”

“Karl Finch, according to the message from our Lord and Master, is safely tucked away in Hell under close supervision from Lord Lucifer himself,” Cathy replied. “Besides, it's impossible to escape Hell. Karl Finch can't be the problem.”

“I don't very much agree with that assumption,” Zhu Hang said. He sat there expressionless, listening and watching, with his fingers pressed together like a tent. “I have heard legends of a book that could guide the user to free condemned souls from Hell. A book that opens the reader's eyes to the escape routes in Hell.”

“I cannot confirm or deny the existence of such a book,” Cathy replied. “But I do strongly doubt it exists, though I'm not in the habit of doubting intelligence from you. I will confer with our Lord and Master to find out if such a book does exist, and if it does, where we can find it.”

“Let's assume that no such book exists,” Ruud said. He was very uncomfortable with all the talks and longed to be back in the comfort of his penthouse with some lovely women taking care of his needs. “What if someone else is trying to follow in Karl Finch's footsteps? Karl wasn't the first to try using the book of creation. From records, there had been many attempts by warlocks over the centuries since the book was written to use the book and destroy the balance of creation. So far, they had all been destroyed and none had ever escaped from Hell, so maybe we're looking at a new warlock seeking what the others had sought before him. It's just a suggestion.”

“And a good one at that,” Abubakar said, smiling one of his rare smiles that made him look deadlier that he already looked. Ruud replied with a weak smile of his own, looking like he wanted to bolt from the room at the next chance he got. Abubakar had always wondered where the movie star got the balls to join the others when they had attacked and killed Karl Finch in that old church years ago. “If it is another warlock, we can handle it like we handled Finch. I'm stronger and with all of us working together, no warlock stands a chance against us.”

Mesut nodded in agreement. He always agreed with the African, and the African likewise always agreed with him. “An odd pair” Cathy thought and had no doubt that every other person in the room felt the same.

“I will suggest we play this very carefully,” Amie spoke. He had been listening carefully, weighing everything he had heard carefully. Since his restoration from ruin, the Arab had become a very careful thinker and most times his suggestions proved worthy. “While we hope some book as Zhu Hang mentioned does not exist and, hope we can outwit any warlock, I still suggest we act with great caution on this matter. Let's check Karl Finch's grave and confirm that the Warlock has not found a way, like Zhu Hang had suggested, to escape from Hell. At the same time, we can still guard against any new threat trying to follow in Finch's footsteps.”

“I agree with that.” Carol said.

Abubakar frowned at her then turned his eyes towards the Arab who like the Asian was also good at concealing his emotions. The Arab simply stared back at him.

“Then maybe Barbie girl here can be the one to go and check on the grave,” Abubakar finally said looking away from the Arab and staring at Carol. “Hope you're not scared of an old cemetery, Ms. Pike. You were there once, and if your latest movie speaks anything of the real you, then you're quite a fearless heroine.”

“You can't suggest…” Carol started to protest but Cathy cut her short.

“Actually I think it is a good idea,” Cathy agreed with Abubakar. She fixed her eyes on the actress daring her to challenge her. Nothing of that sort came, but she noted how uncomfortable the actress had suddenly become as her face reddened. Even the Arab and the Chinese looked amused as they all watched her. “It's time we share some responsibilities around here. You'll go to that little village, I hope you can still remember it, and check on Finch's grave. Shouldn't be a big deal.”

“I can have somebody go…”

“Don't you dare,” Cathy barked at her, rising to her feet. The actress seemed to shrink into her chair visibly afraid. “No outsider must know about this unless the ones we unanimously permit and this matter is not for them. We carried out the deed and we will see it to the end. You and you alone will go there. Your position here, I believe, makes you capable to handle certain situations.”

“Then it's decided then,” Mesut said. “Carol Pike checks the grave and gives us a situation report, then the rest of us just stay on guard, especially you my Supreme Councillor. You have custody of the book and if a warlock is after it, you might be in grave danger.”

“Don't worry about me,” Cathy smiled and cast a brief stare at the ring on her finger. “I can handle myself perfectly well and besides, I know Abubakar possesses the ability to come to my aid at a moment's notice, should I need backup, which I know he is more than anyone can ever ask for.”

Abubakar nodded and smiled again. "You'll be surprised at what could happen," he thought silently.

“We may have to hold a general gathering soon and maybe invoke the presence of our Lord and Master,” Cathy continued. “As we have agreed, Carol will leave for London on the next available flight today…”

“But I have a photo shoot I…” Carol started protesting, but the remaining part of her intended sentence froze in her mouth as Cathy cast her a very dark stare that chilled her to the bones. “Sorry.”

“As I was saying before the interruption,” Cathy continued. The men sitting around the table were struggling hard to hold themselves from laughing after what had happened with Carol. “Carol will leave immediately for London and make her way to that village, Pont-Pierre or whatever it is called and check the grave. She'll report back to me whether it's intact which I believe it would be, then after I have consulted with our Lord and Master, I'll know whether to call a general gathering or not. In the mean time I and the rest of you in possession of the daggers must guard them jealously. Should the need arise, be ready to use them again as you did in that old church.”
