I first started working on Shadowthief when I was about fourteen. I’ve always loved fantasy stories, and I wanted to make one of my own. Estelle was thus born.

In the original story, the one I was writing back in the day while my brother was in gymnastics class, Daniel and Estelle were meant to be a couple! When reworking the story years later, I decided that they made more sense as a sibling dynamic. But then I needed a new love interest.

I knew that I wanted to have an evil king in my story (cliché, yes, I know), so it made sense to give him a wife. Then I wondered, what if the queen was in a loveless marriage? What if she was forced into it? What if she was expected to produce an heir with him? The character of Queen Jesca was born. Then, I took it a step further. What if Jesca is having an affair with Estelle, the leader of the rebellion, who started fighting for Jesca and peace?

Jesca has not been introduced in the story yet, but I hope that you will come to love her when she is finally introduced! It will be a few chapters yet, but the preamble is important to understand Estelle and her perspective on the world. I may do some chapters from Jesca’s point of view in the future.

I would like to give more information on the creation of Estelle. I always wanted her to have a dark past, and it was originally going to be that her parents were abusive, and she ran away. But that on its own isn’t that interesting. So I evolved the idea a bit and now she’s a former cultist! I also loved red hair at the time (still do) and so she was given extremely curly beautiful red hair!

The original story, all those years ago, wasn’t even about a rebellion. The plot has changed significantly over the years, and I think it’s far better now than it was then. As I have reached 5k, leave some comments asking me about the characters, world, and story! Nothing is off-limits, although if I feel uncomfortable with a question, I will not answer.
