Lucian's expression softened as he saw Kieran, and he completely let go of Sebastian, who took a step back. Sebastian's face paled as he realized that the man who had saved him was none other than the lord of the castle, Lucian himself.
Unaware of Lucian and Sebastian's brief but intense moment, Kieran walks up to them with a warm smile directed towards Lucian. "Is everything alright, my love?" Lucian nodded, his gaze briefly flickering back to Sebastian. He found amusement in the situation, noticing that Sebastian had no idea about his identity.
Sebastian, on the other hand, was overwhelmed. He had just been in the arms of the enigmatic lord of the castle, and now the other lord had arrived. Kieran, noticing Sebastian's confusion, turned to Lucian with a curious gaze. "Who's this, Lucian?" He inquired.
Lucian hesitated for a moment, not sure how to explain the situation. He knew he had to be truthful with Kieran, but he didn't want to make Sebastian uncomfortable.
Lucian was about to answer but got cut off. "I'm Sebastian, a new trainee butler of the castle lord Kieran," Sebastian replied. Kieran looked at Sebastian with a neutral look, gave him a nod of acknowledgment, and then turned back towards Lucian again.
"I heard you were looking for me?" He asked with a concerned look. Lucian nodded, grateful for Sebastian's timely interruption. "Yes, I was, Kieran. There are ongoing issues with the current project at the Research Institute."
Kieran's expression grew serious as he realized the gravity of Lucian's words. "I see. Do you need my help then?" Lucian nodded again, appreciating Kieran's unwavering support. He then turned to Sebastian with a polite smile.
"Make sure to not trip and fall over anymore loose veins or branches, Sebastian. We'll have to continue this later." Kieran did not miss the uncharacteristic gentleness and playfulness Lucian directed at the trainee butler but chose not to pay any attention to it for now.
Still somewhat disconcerted by the encounter, Sebastian looked at him and nodded shyly. With that, Lucian and Kieran turned back to return inside the castle, leaving Sebastian’s thoughts in a whirlwind.

The atmosphere changed as they entered a private study, immersing them in tranquility. Shelves of ancient tomes and manuscripts adorned the room, a testament to Lucian's thirst for knowledge and his passion for the secrets of the supernatural world.
Kieran settled into a comfortable armchair, his gaze fixed on Lucian. "What's troubling you, my love?" he asked softly.
Still fraught with tension from the earlier conversation, Lucian began to pace the room, his steps echoing off the hardwood floors. "It's the research project at the Institute, Kieran. It's encountering unexpected issues, and I fear it might compromise a lot, including the institute's reputation."
The room fell silent as Kieran leaned forward, concern etching into his features. "What kind of issues are we talking about?"
Lucian sighed heavily, his gaze fixed on a portrait of a young vampire lord from centuries past. "The lead researcher, Marco, fails to deliver the expected results. The experiments have encountered unforeseen complications, and I had to remind him of the consequences if we fail."
Kieran nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. "I see. Do you think it's a matter of competence or something more?"
Lucian paused, considering Kieran's words. "It could be a combination of both, but I can't help but feel that there's more to it than meets the eye. The timing of these issues is suspicious, especially with other research institutions lurking in the shadows to get their hands on this specific project’s results."
Kieran's eyes narrowed in thought. "You suspect foul play?"
Lucian nodded. "I can't rule it out. Our research is fundamental to keeping the peace between humans and vampires, and it threatens the balance of power among supernatural beings. Some would stop at nothing to see it fail or put their names on it."
Kieran's expression hardened. "Then we must investigate this further. We can't afford to undermine our work like that."
Lucian's eyes met Kieran's, and they shared a silent understanding. "I couldn't agree more. We need this project to protect and preserve the relationship between humans and the vampires we've worked so hard for all these years."
With their plans set in motion, Lucian and Kieran delved deeper into figuring out the complexities regarding the research project. They spent hours pulling out and going through as many books as possible. The study remained their sanctuary, where they could focus on their work and solace in each other's company.
---
Months passed, and Kieran spent all his time cooped up inside one of his research labs at the institute. He threw himself into the research project with unwavering dedication.
The institute's laboratories became his second home, and the experiments his obsession. He worked tirelessly, often into the late hours of the night, fueled by his passion for helping out Lucian, his beloved.
Lucian, deeply concerned about their challenges, became Kieran's steadfast support. He would visit Kieran's private lab, offering encouragement, reviewing data, and sometimes simply sitting with him in complete silence as Kieran worked through complex problems.
Kieran's brilliance and expertise brought a renewed sense of hope to the troubled project. With Lucian's guidance and occasional flashes of insight, they began to untangle the web of issues that had threatened its success.
During breaks from their research, they found solace in each other's arms. Lucian would pull Kieran close, their bodies pressed together, seeking warmth and comfort in their shared moments of intimacy.
During one of those breaks, Lucian noticed Kieran flipping through the data reports with tired eyes. He gently took the report from Kieran’s hands, placed it neatly on his desk, and pulled Kieran into his arms.
“I know the research is important, but so are you, my love. You need rest, too,” He said in a calm voice. Kieran rested his head on Lucian’s chest as he wrapped his arms around his waist, seeking comfort.
“Yeah, I was about to put that down.” He replied tiredly. “Of course you were, love,” Lucian retorted with a playful chuckle.
Kieran gently hits him on his chest when the words leave his mouth, making him chuckle. “Okay, okay, I believe you. No need to be so violent.”
“Then don’t try to be a know-it-all,” Kieran says a bit childishly. A soft pout graced his perfect lips. “Yes, yes, my fault. I should’ve known you would never forego rest while in the middle of work by now.”
“I do take rests,” Kieran tried to protest in a weak voice. “When I remember…” he added with a sigh.
Lucian lets out a small laugh as he runs his fingers soothingly through Kieran’s hair. “It’s fine, love. I’m here to be your personal reminder.” He said playfully.
They stayed like that for a while, seeking comfort in each other. These stolen moments have provided them with respite from the weight of their responsibilities.
As Kieran worked diligently, Lucian took on additional tasks to ensure the smooth operation of the Research Institute. He liaised with external organizations, provided financial support, and handled matters that required a lord's influence and finances.
Months have turned into a relentless cycle of work and research. But amidst the chaos, their love remained a steadfast anchor. It was a love that had withstood the test of time.
Kieran's dedication began to yield results. Experiments that once faltered now showed promise, and data analysis revealed patterns that had eluded them before. The pieces of the puzzle were slowly falling into place.
