Petrona didn't move an inch. Her eyes were fixed on this vampire. Demyan picked up some discomfort from her side. "I am sorry for lying to you. Can you forgive me? Are you scared of me?" Petrona reached out with her badly burned hand. As soon, as she saw it, she hid it under the scarf. "For a second... but I was already expecting it..." All of them were surprised by her statement. "How come?" She was collecting some more energy for the answer. "Do
you remember the first day we met? When I was checking your wounds, I
noticed they were healing too fast. I was suspecting something from the
beginning. I was just too afraid to ask you about it..." Demyan chuckled a little. "You are a smart one!" Mirko disrupted them. "We rather should hide somewhere inside. We will be soon noticed if we stay outside." Luka agreed with him. Adrik opened another portal to her apartment. As
they crossed the threshold and it closed Adrik grabbed a candle and
broke it, so he could use it to write. He drew something on the door and
used his power to make it glow for a bit. Luka was confused. "What are you doing?" Adrik kept silent, while occupied. Finally, when Adrik finished he slumped to the ground out of exhaustion. "It's a spell to protect us from any prying eyes, which might search for us."
Mirko tried to help him up, but Adrik was too heavy for him. Luka
wasn't very cooperative and also he disliked Adrik. Demyan growled at
him to be nicer. Luka rolled his eyes and helped him to stand up. "When you will take that damn arrow out of your shoulder? Do you wear it as a badge to prove how brave you were?" Adrik had none of it. "No, I keep it so I can start to spin in your presence and repeatedly slapping you with it." Demyan was annoyed. "Enough! Both of you!" Petrona
was very weak, but still was worried about them and the commotion they
were causing. Demyan laid her down in the bed, covered her with her
blanket, and put his palm over her face. He used a spell to make her
fall asleep, so she wouldn't be under such strong pain. Sleep would help
her to heal faster as well he thought. He sat next to her on the
bed, Mirko used her chair by the desk. Luka, as a true werewolf, came
down on the floor closer to her bed. Adrik sat down at the window bench
and at last, ripped the stupid arrow out of his shoulder and threw it
out of the window. "Are you happy now?" He made a snide remark at
Luka. Demyan glared. He didn't wish to repeat himself. That made Adrik
shut up and turn his eyes out the window at the forest, which was dipped
in the darkness. After a while of silence, Mirko broke it. "So, what will we all do now? We became traitors..." He looked at Luka. "I and Petrona can't stay here and you won't be able to go back to your village in the forest."
Demyan felt guilty. He began pacing around the room and even came up to
the window, where Adrik was sitting and leaning out watching the night
sky. He could take them to the Waste Lands with him, but the image
of her dead eyes popped up in his mind. He sank his face in his hand.
What should he do? He turned to wounded Petrona lying in bed. He
fell for her; he wanted to be with her, but if she stays with him, she
will definitely die. He was fighting an internal battle, which he
couldn't win. Today almost ended deadly for her, just because he got
involved with her. It was breaking his heart. He looked at Luka who
already began to doze off, resting his head on the side of the bed,
where Petrona was sleeping. He looked like a loyal dog, which didn't
move from the side of its owner. Mirko rested with his arms folded leaning on the backrest with his eyes closed. Demyan sat opposite of Adrik. "Will it be okay, to keep her with me?" Adrik looked at him, but didn't answer. Demyan kept going on with it. "In
the beginning, Luka told me, I will mean ill luck for her. I hate to
admit it, but he was right. I almost got her killed. What should I do?" Luka didn't sleep and he was listening. "Yes you did, but also you protected her, even when a bit too sloppy." He
turned his head toward her. Luka rested his chin on the bed and was
watching her with great intensity. Demyan remembered about the ship. "Maybe it would be better to let her go..."
No matter how heartbreaking for him it was, it was the best option for
ensuring Petrona's safety and happy life. She wished to go far away from
this cursed place. She already had the ticket and it should come to it
in a few days...
It was late in the night when everybody was resting in their own style. Luka sprung up with a whisper. "They are here!" Adrik gestured for him to shut up, to not reveal them. The spell was hiding them. The steps left. Adrik smirked. "I
put it under a level one spell. Every time, someone approaches the
close proximity of the door, they will forget why they came." Luka's jaw dropped. "Are you crazy? That's not enough to protect us." Adrik chuckled. "Humans are stupid, they will fall for it every damn time! Trust me!" Petrona
woke up and everybody turned their attention towards her. Demyan sat
down next to her stroking her hair. She felt much better and her body
was almost healed, she took out her hand and the skin looked almost like
nothing ever happened. They all were relieved.
Demyan hugged
her tightly with tears in his eyes. He knew this will be soon a goodbye
for them... but the others don't need to know about it.
A heartbreaking challenge awaits Demyan shortly after the Festival, which forces him to return to his home in the Waste Lands. He is back to his emotionless self obeying his father's orders. Sava surprises him with a political marriage, which he is opposed to, but can't do anything about it, yet. He doesn't know, who will seek him out in the very near future, with the help of the Goblin Prince.
