The next morning was quiet. Nobody was keen to talk much. Mirko looked
at Demyan and with whispers asked him what now? They need to eat and
drink something or they won't last long. Adrik smirked. "Leave it to me!" He
backed off towards the window and jumped out of it still facing them.
Mirko and Luka ran after to see if he crushed down. He flew up and kind
of disappeared out of their sight. He used a camouflaging spell to hide
himself. Demyan was still sitting on the bed next to sleeping Petrona
and he didn't pay any attention to Adrik. Let them do whatever is
needed. Petrona woke up and Demyan smiled at her. "Finally, you are awake! How do you feel today? Everything like before?"
Petrona sat up with her blanket clutching at her chest and looked at
one of her hands. Everything was healed without leaving any trace or
scars. Both Luka and Mirko sighed out of relief. Petrona recalled
what was happening yesterday and asked them for more details since her
memory was hazy, because of the pain and also the times she was
unconscious. Luka sat on the other side of the bed and Mirko near her
legs. "Demyan came and owned for being the one who gifted you the ring." She turned to him. "So you lied to save me, your Highness?" He was kind of disappointed for her thinking he would lie. "I just said the truth." At first, Petrona didn't grasp it. "Ah, okay..." She lowered her gaze only to dart her eyes back at him. "Wait, what! Don't tell me you are my lantern friend from the other side of the forest." He gifted her a gentle smile. "Yes, it is me." Petrona fell into his arm. "This
whole time... It was you, my Prince! I am so happy you are fine! You
knew how much I was worried about your well-being and still kept it a
secret from me!" Demyan tightened his arms around her. "I am
really sorry! I was afraid, that if you learned about my real identity, I
mean, me being a vampire, you would abandon me." She looked up. "You know, that's not the case your Highness. You already know me." He kissed her forehead. "Yes, I do now!" Luka was displeased with what he had seen and Mirko just awkwardly sat around. Adrik
came right on the cue bringing food for them. After of much-needed
breakfast, they all began to contemplate what would be the next step for
all of them. Demyan saddened broke Petronas secret to them. "Do you have still the ticket for the ship?" She looked at him surprised and nodded. Even when that thought destroys him, she needs to escape far away from this place. "You should leave..." Luka sprung up. "What the hell are you talking about?! What ticket?! To where?" Mirko joined in. "Did you have plans to leave us?" Adrik was just and silent onlooker. Luka got furious by the second. "When
did you want to tell us about it? Why did that bloodsucker know and we
didn't? We are your true friends and have known you the longest, yet you
refuse to inform us?" Adrik fake cough. Luka was annoyed by that.
Mirko tried to calm him down and he swapped his arm from him and walked
over to the other side of the room sulking. Petrona decided to speak up and spill the truth. "For
a few years, I was planning my escape. All my money was saved for this
one dream. I want to leave this place and never turn back. After the
incident with Angelika five years ago. I knew I couldn't keep going
on like this... with this stupid life, with the damn laws, which were
hindering me... I kept it secret because I knew you would try to change
my mind. You are not my friends, I consider you family and feared to
hurt your feelings..." Demyan just agreed with her. She wasn't
safe anywhere in this country. She focused her gaze towards the crumbled
blankets on her bed. Luka slightly turned his head their way. "Family?! What a joke..." He was mad at her. Mirko kept silent. He was sad and as well hurt. Demyan laid his hand over her to comfort her. Petrona
couldn't avoid this situation and she knew Luka would come around. He
just has this werewolf temper, which is normal. Adrik was observing them
the whole time. This wasn't right for him, but kept his distance from
it!
The day flew by. Petrona prepared herself for her
departure. The mood was very sorrowful. Demyan was sure to return to his
land and offered asylum for Mirko and Luka. Adrik was going back home
as well later on. The evening came and Petrona was ready to leave, same for the guys. "So this is it? I won't see you anymore? You won't cook for me? Look out for me?..." Luka was hurting on the inside. Mirko also tried to say his goodbyes. "I
will really miss you! I can't imagine not seeing you every morning
smiling at me. Getting a drink at the bar... Everything will change from
now on." He hugged her for a minute. Luka swallowed his pride and anger and fell into her arms. "I wish you would stay..." He whispered into her ear. Adrik waited his turn and walked up to her looking down. "Will you grant me a goodbye hug?" Petrona surprised him with the scarf. She wrapped it around his neck and then embraced him. Adrik
tried his best to keep his emotions under control. Demyan sighed. He
was the one taking her to the ship. He planned to express his farewell
there without any witnesses. Adrik opened a portal to the other side of
the forest for the three of them and nodded at Demyan to meet him there
later. Petrona watched as it closed with them waving at her. She looked
at Demyan and was ready to be flown to the port. At the ship port,
Demyan finally broke. He grabbed her into his arms with tears in the
corners of his eyes. He didn't want her to leave, but it was really for
the best. While holding her, he reminisced over all those years, nights,
and lanterns from her. How all of it made him happy and kept him going
with his life, but now it will end tonight for good. Why had it to
be like this? He looked down on Petrona while still holding her in his
embrace. Her wet eyes were sparkling because of the street lights. Then
that atrocious image of her death appeared. Right, that's why, he wasn't
persistent with her to stay... "Your Highness... I am scared! I don't
want to leave... now..." Don't do this now! Don't say such things... he
was thinking to himself, while his tears began to run in streams down
his cheeks. He was looking up, so she wouldn't notice them. Demyan
clenched his teeth for a bit, so he wouldn't say it out loud. "You have to! You need to escape to safety, it's dangerous for you to stay here..."
Petrona lowered her head and pressed her face into Demyan's chest. She
knew he was right. For a few minutes, they didn't move out of each
other's arms. It was for the last time, so they hugged for a long time. By
holding each other's hands they walked up to the ship and together
admired the dark sea. When the ship bell began to ring, Demyan knew he
had to let her go. Petrona's hand slowly slipped out of his grasp and it
was like someone would stab his heart. She asked him to watch the
ship till it disappeared behind the horizon and he agreed. Petrona was
standing on the side clutching the railing doubting her decisions. The
growing distance between him and her was hurting them both, but Demyan
couldn't do it anymore and rather he took off flying away. He couldn't
keep his promise.
Petrona's eyes followed him with understanding tears... "Goodbye, my Prince!"
A heartbreaking challenge awaits Demyan shortly after the Festival, which forces him to return to his home in the Waste Lands. He is back to his emotionless self obeying his father's orders. Sava surprises him with a political marriage, which he is opposed to, but can't do anything about it, yet. He doesn't know, who will seek him out in the very near future, with the help of the Goblin Prince.
