"So, you're new here, right?" Shoya said to Anna, with a grin on his face. He was the number three student in the school, and he had a powerful ability.
"Yeah, and I heard you're the number three here," Anna said, with a honest and decent smile on her face. She was a transfer student, and she had a mysterious ability.
"Yeah, do you know what my ability is?" Shoya asked, as he began to walk closer towards Anna.
"What is it?" Anna asked, as she remained calm, even with him getting closer and closer to her.
"You'll find out soon enough!" he said, as he dashed towards her at almost regular human speed.
"What is this? Is he playing?" Anna thought, as she saw him approaching. She noticed that her shadow began to grow beneath her feet, and her eyes began to glow slowly, turning red. She stood still, as she raised her right hand and flicked her finger to the left.
Shoya was still smiling, but then he noticed something coming from her shadow. It was a dark and liquid-like substance, and it crashed into him with great force. He felt an overwhelming weight coming from it, despite it being liquid.
"So, this is your ability," Shoya said, before being thrown in the air by the impact of her attack. He crashed into the wall, and the area where he fell began to show smoke rising.
"I hit him, but I feel as if that attack wasn't quite enough," Anna said, as she kept her guard up.
"Ah, how fascinating. What an interesting ability you have there," Shoya said, as he came out of the dust. His body looked perfectly fine, but Anna realized something strange about Shoya after the attack. Shoya's eyes glowed red, just like hers.
She then launched another attack, and Shoya leaned in and ran towards her. He created a force so great that the ground beneath him got obliterated.
"What's going on?" Anna questioned herself, with a smile on her face. She was enjoying the challenge.
Shoya then got near her and prepared himself for a punch. Anna summoned her black liquid, the Dark Ooze, to defend against Shoya's fist. However, Shoya's fist hit her Dark Ooze, and it wasn't enough to break through her defense.
"Mmm, I still need to build up some more energy," Shoya thought, as he jumped back and prepared for another attack.
Anna quickly disposed of her Dark Ooze and attacked Shoya. She shaped it into a needle, aiming to make him bleed and knock him out quickly. She had observed that Shoya had an ability to absorb attacks and make himself stronger.
Anna had also heard rumors about this, so she was planning to end the fight before he got too hard to handle.
Shoya saw the attack coming, and he rushed towards it, preparing to dodge.
"If I somehow move perfectly between her attack, I can then absorb the impact of the attack and adapt to it," he thought.
He then realized that the walls of the incoming Dark Ooze were forming other sharp needles, and he jumped back to avoid them. But it was too late. The attack had already been launched.
"Is it over?" I wondered, as I watched the needles approaching him at immense speed.
Shoya smiled, and clenched his fist tight. He stood in a fighting pose.
"Does he intend to block everything coming at him?" I asked myself, as the needles drew closer.
In an instant, I saw something hitting his chest four times, but it was too fast for me to see. Shoya's eyes glowed red, and this usually meant he had adapted again, increasing his physical strength and speed.
Shoya then dodged all of Anna's attacks in a flash, and ran towards her to finish the fight. However, as he approached her, he felt something tangling his leg. It was Anna's Dark Ooze, that she had cast upon the ground.
Shoya then saw the whole ground turning black, and he realized he couldn't escape. He clenched his fist again, and tried to hit himself free. But before he could, Anna's Dark Ooze strangled his hands, and he couldn't move at all.
"Damn, she got me," he said, as he looked at her, glaring.
Anna walked towards Shoya, and said, "You're smart. You hit yourself on the chest, so that you could increase your speed and strength by applying what you had adapted from me and your regular power onto yourself. Although your adaptability is great in fights, the very fact that your adaptability has a time limit makes it practically useless in other cases." She raised her left hand up.
"Useless? What do you mean by that?" Shoya asked, annoyed.
Anna looked at the sky, as if she was thinking, and then looked back at Shoya. She said, "Let's say tomorrow our school is attacked. Your adaptation would have expired by then. From what I've heard, it lasts only three hours. So, you will be a normie soon enough."

As she finished her statement, she slashed his chest with a deepcut, validating her win.

He couldn't continue it was over for him now.


"Don't worry, you'll have your position back by tomorrow. It only lasts a day," she said, as she giggled and walked out of the ring.
Everyone in the crowd paused, including everyone who was waiting for their matches to come.
I looked at Jane's group, and it seemed like they had seen something they weren't prepared for.
"How could some unknown just beat the current number three like that? Shoya's ability is to adapt, and it seemed more like Anna was the real one adapting," Jane thought, as she watched Shoya leave the ground, embarrassed.
"Shit, what the hell, man?" Dwayne said, as he came to me, rushing and filled with disbelief.
"Hey, bro, she talked to you, didn't she?" he asked, as he leaned in towards me, grinning with a smile.
I stared at him, and then I noticed everyone looking at me. It got me all surprised.
"Seems like you're getting popular," Ashylene said, as she walked towards me, giggling and laughing at me.
I then shrugged both of them off, and Sandra came in. She walked towards me, and I cut them off.
"Hey, Sandra, you doing good?" I asked, as I rushed towards her.
Dwayne and Ashylene followed, and then we began discussing again. Eventually, the story about Anna started again, and Sandra joined in on laughing at me. It irritated me so much.
Anna and Shoya then both headed to the nurse's office, and we knew it was finally time to know who's next. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to fight any of those in the top 10, or even Ashylene's sisters. I already knew I couldn't beat them in normal cases, so I preferred it if I didn't have to face them.
The announcer cheered for Shoya's fight with Anna, but he was shocked to see Shoya lose the fight against Anna. He couldn't wait to see what would happen during the competition, and he announced that there would be a new top 10 list replacing the old one.
We then saw that Jane was up next. She fought against another student in our grade, who was remarkable, although not in the top 10. But she was beaten easily by Jane, and this surprised us. Jane was one of the strongest fighters in our school, and she had a speed ability like Sandra.
After that match, Dwayne heard his name being called out. He jumped out of excitement.
"Ah, finally, I'm going to show them what I got," he said, as he rolled his sleeves up, preparing himself for the fight. However, everything changed when he heard the name of his opponent. Guess who it was? That's right, it was none other than Sarah, who was Ashylene's little sister.
"Ah, fuck," I said to Dwayne, as I looked at Sarah. She had already turned around and walked towards the door leading outside, that went straight to the ground. She had a void ability like Ashylene, and she was very skilled with it.
"Don't worry, guys, I'll win," Dwayne said, as he followed behind her, with a grin on his face. He was confident in his invention ability, and he had a sword that he had made himself.
