Head Over Heels

5. You and I

5. You and I

Dec 09, 2023

Sky couldn't help but smile to himself as he made his way back home. He had finally found his soulmate and the guy was fucking gorgeous. With dark, brown eyes the shape of almonds, messy, raven black hair that looked nearly untamable, and enough lean muscle to suggest he did his fair share of working out, Sky couldn't deny his boyish but somehow elegant charm.

Sure, he was a bit of a douchebag, but Sky could deal with that. It shouldn't be exactly difficult to begin with. When it came down to it, Chris was his soulmate.

Still, his thoughts began to wander. He self-consciously raised a hand to his long, silky hair before he could think better of it.

What if Chris didn't find him as attractive as Sky had found him? Sure, he had said that he thought Sky was hot, but that didn't necessarily have to mean anything. People said all kinds of things that they didn't really mean for the sake of being polite, and it wasn't as if Sky himself had opened an opportunity for Chris to give him the ugly truth had he wanted to.

Maybe he'd been a little aggressive? Maybe that had been a turnoff? Maybe Chris had found his looks attractive but had been appalled by his personality?

Sky shook his head in an attempt to clear his troubled mind, letting the light strands of loose hair he'd accidentally pulled out flutter to the ground.

He was being stupid.

Chris was his soulmate.

Simple and done.

Easy.

It still wouldn't hurt to get a close friend's opinion on the matter. He located her number in his contacts, her name just above Chris's, and quickly dialed, bringing his phone to his ear as he waited for her to pick up.

He wasn't left waiting for long. She barely gave it a second.

"Hey," Cass said, drawing the word out. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"

"Guess what."

"Has the zombie apocalypse finally started?" she asked. The sound was a little muffled like she was eating something. "'Cause work has been kicking my ass and I'm too young to be this constantly tired."

Sky couldn't stop himself from rolling his eyes if he deliberately tried.

"You make me question why I even talk to you, sometimes."

"Obviously because you love me and couldn't survive a day without me," Cass said with a touch of drama and a little laugh. "But on a serious note. What happened?"

Sky took a quick breath and let the words fall out with his next exhale.

"I just found my soulmate."

There was a long silence. Then, a lot of shuffling and a loud crash that made Sky wince.

"Oops," Cass muttered to herself before speaking to Sky, louder, "what the hell? Are you serious? How can you say that like it's nothing? What's his name? Is he hot? Please tell me he's hot—"

"According to my standards, yeah, he's hot, but that shouldn't matter to you considering you aren't going anywhere near him. If he knew I was associated with someone like you, he'd probably delete my number from his phone immediately whether he's my soulmate or not."

Well, after a little thought, Chris wouldn't be able to delete something he didn't have. Sky laughed a little at the thought.

"Well, that's a lie and a half."

"Is it? You have that effect on people."

"Now I don't know whether I should be cheering for you or plotting on you for the next time I see you."

"Either way I'm sure I'll be fine."

"Whatever!" Cass said. She sounded a little distracted and she let him know why before he even had to ask, muttering to herself beneath her breath. "There's glass everywhere."

"You should probably clean that up."

"No shit?" Cass asked around a laugh. "Sadly, I gotta let you go. I better be meeting up with this Chris guy soon though. Bye, love!"

"See you."

After the mildly amusing conversation, Sky started to put his phone into his back pocket but stopped short. He couldn't stop thinking. All the what-ifs ran through his mind like a mantra. This could truly and honestly be the best thing that has ever happened to him. If he let it, this could mean the entire world. In a way, it already did.

This was his dream. His dream had bumped into him on the sidewalk on an ordinary afternoon. This was a rare kind of luck, and now he had no clue what to do with what— who— it'd given him. It felt like if he didn't direct his energy somewhere soon, though, he might vibrate out of his own skin.

After only a second's hesitation, he put his passcode into his phone and went to his contacts. Dialed the contact just under Cassandra's, stopping in place as if he weren't capable of doing two things all at once. Sky had planned on making him sweat a little, but it seemed his own patience had its very short limits.

It rang only once before he heard a newly familiar voice on the opposite line.

"Hello?" Chris said. "Sky? This you?"

Sky smiled, showing teeth that his soulmate couldn't even see.

"Who else?" he said back. "When are you free?"

"Sunday," Chris said— laughed to himself and corrected, "tomorrow, I mean."

"That works. Have any ideas?"

"Uh. I mean, when you put me on the spot—"

"How about this," Sky said excitedly, "we can meet up at the park. The one near where we met. We can figure out what we're doing from there."

"That sounds good. Perfect." Sky wasn't completely sure, but it'd almost sounded as if Chris had added a touch of a purr to the word. It made him feel a little warmer than he already did under the beating sun. "I'll see you there at... twelve? Does that work?"

"It works. See you then."

"See you, Sky."

He hung up and slid his phone into his pocket so he could pay better attention to his surroundings. Attempt to, anyway. He was moving on more or less autopilot. It was hard to think of where he was going or anything for that matter. His thoughts were trained on one thing— one person— the whole way home.

A soulmate, huh?

As far as Chris is concerned, his life couldn’t be more mundane. Hour after hour, day after day, his life is just a continuous, tiresome process. Eat, sleep, go to work, and the cycle only goes on. That is, until he stumbles upon his brazen soulmate during an odd stroke of luck, and his life takes a complete one-eighty.
