Tears To You, My Dear

Chapter Nine

Chapter Nine

Dec 12, 2023

“Well, he should've been here by now,” Wesley looked at his watch before looking back at us, “Give me just a moment. I'm going to go find him,” He walked off and we just stood there

“Does anybody see any water? Or a vending machine?” Someone asked

“Yeah, does anyone see one?” Ysennia butt in, standing on her tippy toes and looking around

“I'll go find one for you,” Professor Urban said, “Make sure to press the button on your bracelet so I can know your location. And how many should i get?”

“Ten, Professor!”

“I'll get five. Hopefully they'll hand out free ones,” Professor Urban walked off

Ysennia leaned against me as we waited until we heard shouting. “My feet are killing me,” Ysennia groaned

“I'm so sorry everyone,” Wesley came running to us, “Our guide is on his way. It seems he lost track of time as he's working on a complicated case at the moment. So, please excuse his attitude today,”

“I have a question,” Alex raised his hand, “Will you or anyone be handing out water?”

Wesley eyes widened, “Sorry about that. I'll get you some. I just realized you all are not used to Okai's weather yet,” He walked off again

“He sure is all over the place,” Ysennia said

“Well, it’s not his fault. It’s the lawyer for not keeping an alarm or understanding the importance of being a guide,” Lizi complained, “Wesley, is overworked and hes making it more difficult,”

“Well, pardon my late arrival,” We all froze and looked at her person in front of us, my eyes widened and I hid behind Ysennia, waking her up, “I got bombarded with a new case and it’s not a easy one, so please forgive me for arriving late and wasting your precious time,”

“What the hell are you doing, Layla?” Ysennia said, tryng to look back at me

“Please don’t ask questions and just let me hide behind you,” I clutched onto her shirt as my head wanted to raise and looked into his eyes

“So, now that I’m here. I’ll introduce myself and then all 30 of you will as well. It’s always nice to get to know one another. My name is Nemesio Neville. I know it may seem like a mouthful, but please call me Neville as that is easier for everyone,”

“Well, I didn't expect that name for his features,” Ysennia mumbled

I peeked from behind and watched as he looked over us until our eyes met and I ducked behind Ysennia once more. Grateful that I was able to look away for once

“I thought there was supposed to be thirty students. I've only counted 29,”

“Layla, move to the side,” Ysennia turned her head to me

“You can’t make me,” I clunged onto her shirt

She grabbed my hands and tried to undo my hold, but I wouldn't let her. “Sir, I'm sorry, but my friend here is shy, so please excuse her,”

I could feel his gaze on me, “Well, if she’s wanting to get into this career path, she must push that personality aside and adjust to this work field,”

I felt my face burn. I've barely been here for less than two hours and I'm already embarassed. I let out a shaky breath and stepped out from behind Ysennia. I smiled at him, “I apologize for my shyness. I'll do my best to overcome it,”

“But Layla isn't shy,” Someone whispered

I kept staring at him as he stared back at me. It probably looked weird to others, but it was difficult to separate my gaze from him. He looked away, letting me breath and he clapped his hands, “Now, that I've counted thirty of you. We can start the tour… Well, not yet since I see Wesley running over with some bottles to hand to you. Once you get a bottle then we can offically start the tour,”

Wesley appeared and handed out the water bottles, “Okay, we are all good, right?” He held up his thumbs, “Okay, good. I'm sorry Neville. You can begin the tour,”

He nodded before walking forward, “We will start in the reception area where all our clientes wait and make appointments. So, please stick close as it's very easy to get lost,” He continued to walk and we followed him

We listened to his detailed tour, almost being stuck to each other since he wasn't kidding on being lost in this maze of a court. We eventually stopped in the courtyard, taking a rest as Neville got a call. I put my hair up in a ponytail, making sure to let it loose since I usually get a headache if its too tight and I haven't eaten since I woke up.

“Layla,” I looked over at Ysennia, humming in response, “Have you met Neville before?”

“Why do you ask?” My heartbeat picking up, “And no,” I lied, not wanting to get her curious and make her ask multiple questions

She hummed, eyeing me. I know she wanted to ask me more questions, but decided against it, probably because we were out in the open.

“Can I touch your hair?” I looked to my side and noticed it was our new teammate

“Uh, yeah, you can. And I'm sorry for introducing myself late, but I'm Layla. The leader of our group,” I held out my hand

“Kelli,” She quickly shook my hand before playing with my hair. I didn't mind it as it felt relaxing to me. I closed my eyes, enjoying the sun and slight wind, hitting me. The weather felt better here even though I was still adjusting it. Back home, it was cold weather and we would only get two months of hot hot weather like in the high 90s before it dropped back to the regular temp which was 70.

“Is your hair normally curly?”

I peeked my eye open and looked at Kelli as she twirled my curl

“Well, only the ends curl while the top part is straight. I truly do like the curls at the end until it knots and are uneven,”

“Were you born with this hair color or did you dye it?”

Well, she's a curious one. That's a good thing, but it can be a deadly curiousity. “I was born with this color. I inherited it from my father. The interesting thing is that my cousins all have this similiar hair color so we think it's a dominant gene,”

“Well, it is a nice dark blue color and the tips are a nice azure color. Your father blessed you,”

“Thank you…,” I was shocked to hear that because I was a failure to them and they failed me by not giving me any magic

“Sorry about that, everyone. I hope you enjoyed this break as we will be walking alot more and then meeting your potential mentor,” He smiled at us before walking over to the doors, “Let's get going, my fellow coworkers,”

                                                 ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

“No…,” I mumbled as I noticed I was the only one left

“Neville, I think your missing a mentor for her,” One of his coworkers said, pointing to me

“I'm not missing anyone. I'll be her mentor,” He smiled at his coworker before at me

I clutched the strap of my satchel, not liking the way my heart was acting. He walked over to me before extending his hand, “It's a pleasure to meet you. As you know, I'm Neville. May I know your name?”

I look at his hand before placing mine in his and shaking it, not liking the shivers I got and looked up at him, “I'm Layla, a lawyer student, willing to learn new skills. Please take good care of me,”

I watched as his eyes widened and the ocean blue color darkened. I looked back at our hands and realized he was squeezing my hand. I tried to pull it out before stumbling back as he grabbed my hand once more after letting me go.

“Sorry, I blanked,” I blinked my eyes multiple times as this time, he was showing a geninue smile

“No worries,” I took my hand out of his hold and looked to my right to see everyone staring at us and I noticed Ysennia big smile. I'm doomed

“Sorry for the delay,” Neville cleared his throat before turning to them, “You will be with your mentors for a few hours before following Wesley for dinner. Please enjoy today as it'll be lightwork and try to rememeber the path to their office. As you will report to their offices early in the morning. Your professors will give you more information on that. See you all in a few hours,”

After that, everyone left and it was only us two. I looked up at him and he was already staring at me. “So…um…, what will we do now?” I asked trying to break the silence

He took one last look at me before looking forward, “Well be heading to my office as I have documents to read and complete. While we walk there, tell me what you learned at your academy and at other firms or courts as I may need your help if needed,” He started to walk and I tried to match his pace

“I learned how to work the software and input new documents and arrange them. I'm not very good at reading the documents with underlining the important facts. If you show me how to do something, I can learn it quickly since I'm a hands on learner,”

“Well, I'll teach you everything but you'll have to learn other materials on your own since we can't always be by yourself,” He looked at me

“I'm willing to learn,” I smiled at him
