To Mend a Shattered Heart

Can You Comfort?

Can You Comfort?

Dec 17, 2023

“Yeah,” Seonwoo replied, making her hold her breath. “Like you know, when someone randomly offers to pay for your food, even though you don’t know what you did, OR when someone just decides to tag along with you while you're babysitting a friend’s kid. I don’t know, all my other friends just don’t do that, so you’re weird. Also, why the hell is eating adorable?”

He had a point, she had no obligation to just tag along with them, or offer him food. “No, not eating, I meant that the reason you’re up, it reminds me of babies. They wake up in the middle of the night because they’re hungry. I think they’re adorable.”

“I’m not a baby.”

“I never said you were.”

“Bunny, stop, I’m gonna eat that. If I’m a baby, what does that make you? A baby baby?”

Sua giggled, “a baby baby? What is that? And why am I one?”

“You’re obviously more of a baby than I am, so if I’m a baby, you're littler than a baby. A baby baby. Right?”

“No, that doesn’t make any sense.”

“Hmm.”

“Anyway, it’s late, so I-” he cut her off.

“Wanna hang out? We can eat food. You’re hungry right? Let’s meet up at Mira’s Place.”

“Right now?”

“Sure, why not?”

“Why Mira’s?”

“Because it’s open, besides there’s more food options there.”

“You’re going to someone else’s house?”

“What? No.”

“You just said ‘let’s go to Mira’s place.’”

“Yeah, Mira’s Place, it’s the cafe you took me to when we first met.”

“Oh. And why now?”

“I’m awake, you’re awake, I think tha- Bunny stop! This is mine, go get your own. - that’s a good enough reason to go.”

“I was just about to go to sleep. Besides, didn’t you tell me sleep was important?”

“Yeah, it is. But you’re not asleep now, and I’m not asleep, and - Bunny! That was mine! Bunny! Give it back! No! Shit. Now I have to go to the store. - and Mira’s Place is open through the night.”

“Yeah, you should probably go get yourself some food, sounds like Bunny just ate the last of it.”

“Yeah, he did, stupid Bunny. I’m not getting you fish this time. No. Bunny, go back to bed. Bunny stop. Bunny!” Seonwoo burst into a fit of giggles, and she heard the sound of plastic against tile, ringing through the phone. It must have fallen out of his hand. She could still hear him laughing, and she smiled. He always seemed so carefree. So full of life. She wasn’t. She’d never be.

“Ah” Seonwoo’s voice broke through his laughter, “Bunny, stop. I’m supposed to be mad at you.” he giggled, and picked up the phone, “Bunny, seriously.” his attention turned back to the phone, “What were you saying?”

“I think you should go shopping.”

“Yeah, Bunny ate the last of it.” he laughed, “Bunny stop!”

“What is going on?”

“Huh?”

“What’s Bunny doing? It sounds like you're being tickled, but Bunny’s a cat.”

“Ack! Bunny!” Seonwoo's voice went sharp, “ah, yeah, he’s a cat. Anyway, how about we meet at Mira’s. Asking for your number is still on the table right?”

“I’m calling you with it.”

“Oh, right. Anyway, I’ll call you when I get there!” he hung up.

“I thought I told you you couldn’t be late? So why are you just getting here now?” he asked me, as his tall figure hovered over me. “I’m the dominant one in this relationship, so you have to listen to me. Don’t be late.”

“I’m sorry, but my fri-”

“I don’t want any lame excuse Sua, I know you don’t have any damn friends.”

“I’m sorry Derek, it’s just you gave me less time to get ready today, and-” his hand slapped across my face, cutting me off from saying anything further.

“You’re going to go ahead and blame me now are you? What a load of crap! I knew dating you was pathetic. If you're not gonna listen to people, then just go ahead and die.”

“Sua, was it?” a sweet sounding voice rang next to her ear, and she turned her head on the outside table in front of the cafe to look into the blue eyes of a platinum blond haired girl, that she had seen multiple times throughout the pages of magazines and in the back of a restaurant. She had helped her fill out a form not too long ago at MV Entertainment.

“Mira?” Sua asked.

“That’s me, yes?” Mira answered, “What are you doing here so late?”

“Oh, well, I guess I was…” she trailed off, unsure if she should actually tell someone the reason why she had darted out of bed and gotten dressed as soon as Seonwoo had hung up.

“Are you waiting for someone?” Mira asked.

“Yeah…”

“This late?”

“Yeah…”

“I don’t know about this, Sua, it just doesn’t seem right to meet up with someone this late at night, are you going to be okay?”

“I mean, we’re meeting here.”

“I see.” Mira smiled, “Can I wait with you, then?”

“Yeah, sure.”

“Woah! Sua, you’re earlier than I had thought you’d be!” The voice made Mira and Sua break their conversation, and turn to face the owner.

“Hi, Seonwoo, what brings you here?” Mira asked, folding her hands across the table, a smirk playing at her lips.

“Sua and I were hungry, and I was out of food.” Seonwoo stated, shrugging, as if it wasn’t a big deal at all.

“So you’re the person who asked a lady to meet up with you so late into the night.” Mira’s smirk was only growing.

“Yeah, so?” Seonwoo asked, sliding into the seat next to Sua, exhausted. His head hit the table, as his chest heaved.

“Meeting with Seonwoo? How come you didn’t tell me sooner?” Mira’s eyes nearly sparkled. She was up to something, and Sua wasn’t quite sure how she felt about it.

Seonwoo raised his head, his chin resting on the table, “Mira, you got food? I’m starving.”

“You and Bunny ate it all again?” Mira giggled.

“No! Bunny ate the last of it!” Seonwoo retorted, slamming himself into an upright position, “He was all being behaved, and only eating his, and letting me eat mine, until she called.” Seonwoo jutted a thumb over to Sua, “and then he decided that my food was better than his, and began to try and take my food. But get this! He already ate all of his food, and so now he eats my food, which leaves me with no food. So then I had to go to the store, and Sua was up ‘cause she was hungry, and your food’s really good, and you’re open, so I don’t have to cook anything.”

“But I thought you loved fire.”

“Yeah, I do.” Seonwoo shrugged an answer, “but it’s kinda hard when you have to waste your money repairing that burnt spot on your walls.”

“Oh come on, Seonwoo, you get enough to pay for it,” Mira smiled, “Come on in, it’s chilly out here.”

“It’s not bad,” Seonwoo shrugged but followed Mira inside, Sua tailing behind.

“You’re really open for twenty-four hours?” Sua asked Mira, peeking over Seonwoo’s shoulder to see the two people in a far corner conversing at a booth.

“Yes,” Mira replied, gesturing to a booth, “Have a seat.”

“Yes’m!” Seonwoo yelped, and leaped over the corner of the table, to slide into the booth, “You bought me food last time, Sua, so I’ll buy yours as thanks!”

“Oh,” Sua replied, taking the available seat opposite him, “You really don’t have to.”

“Yeah I do!” He replied, with a wide grin.

“Let him treat you, Sua,” Mira smirked, “it isn’t everyday that Seonwoo decides he’ll pay for someone else’s food.”

“Not true.” Seonwoo pouted, looking out the window.

Moonlight didn’t fit him as much as the sun did. It reflected off his pink hair as he walked beside her, but it made it take a shade closer to purple, soft, and inviting, instead of the loud and fiery attitude he had when they first met. And yet, it might not come up all the time when she’s talking with him, but the simple moment with Alleah told her that that’s who he was, too. She let out a sigh, before drifting her gaze from his side-profile to look at her own feet. The stone pavement of the park under each step made her realize she had never done this with someone before, and it felt nice.

“Didn’t think you’d eat so much.” she let out a light laugh, trying to bring up conversation, since he, surprisingly, didn’t.

“People say that a lot.” he answered, before tilting his head up to look at the sky.

“Tired?” Sua asked, stopping and turning to look at him.

He stopped, sensing she had decided to no longer take the slow steps they were making, but didn’t shift his gaze, “More or less.” he replied.

“Something wrong at work?” she asked, taking a step closer, so she could see his illuminated expressions better.

He dropped his head, and stared at the ground, “I suppose, I couldn’t care less about it though.”

“Oh really?” she teased. This wasn’t normal for her, normally she’d keep to herself, not speak unless spoken to, but for some reason, tonight felt different. Maybe it was the way he warmed up her heart when he laughed, or how genuine he seemed to be. She wanted to test him, but somehow, she ended up wondering about his problems, and hoping he’d confide in her about them.

His eyes slid to the side, so they gazed at her, for a moment, before sliding back to the spot they had been looking at before, “Yeah.”

She huffed, before marching in front of him, “And? What is it?”

His eyes didn’t change their gaze, even as she stood right in front of him, but he answered her anyway, “Someone’s just running around using my name, that’s all.”

“What do you mean, ‘using your name.’”

“To get things, people, girls, I guess.” he shrugged, “I don’t really care, though.”

“Like, he’s pretending to be you?” she asked, before grabbing gently at his locks, “It’s pretty hard to get a color like this, though, and pull it off.”

He looked at her hand, as it hung in front of his face before dropping, “I don’t know how he’s doing it, but he’s not dying his hair pink.” he ruffled his hair, before smirking, “and thanks.”

She froze for a second, before regaining composure, “Yeah, don’t mention it.” she spun on her heel, and looked at the sky, “You’re not gonna try and convince me to go to your place, now, are you?”

“Why? You wanna go?” Seonwoo asked behind her, not moving any closer to her, still standing in the same spot. She felt like he’d be smirking, but the way his voice sounded so confused, and soft, she wanted to say that’s how his face looked.

“No,” she answered, turning to glance over at him.

“Then why’d ya bring it up!” he exclaimed, waving his arms in the air to enunciate his confusion.

She giggled, “Just on nights like this, guys tend to just whip the girl away to their place.”

“Whip them away?” he repeated, “What? Why? Do girls like that?”

Sua blinked, had she worded that weirdly, one brow was raised on his face, and his lips parted slightly as he waited for an answer. He was nice. All of the times she had tested him, hung out with him, yelled at him, and pushed him away, he was still the same, silly, naive guy. She walked over to him, stopping her feet a few inches from his own, and looked up at him. His head tilted down as he looked at her, his pushed back hair from its earlier ruffles fell over his face again. The moonlight reflected off the tip of his nose, and the whites of his eyes, as it illuminated him, mostly, from behind.

“Some do, I guess,” she dropped her gaze to his chest, “but not me.”

“That’s a relief,” he smiled, “cause I don’t think I could ever do that to you.”

It hurt her, surprisingly, when he said that. Were these newly developing feelings for him unrequited? There was that girl, Liza, from Mira’s cafe, anyway. Before she knew it her forehead met with his chest, as her eyes began to water in a silent sob. Although she knew that they probably wouldn’t progress any further than this, it was a relief to know he wasn’t like the others. Without even having to say it, he had essentially just told her that she has a purpose, that she isn’t just looks. That… “I can be truly loved, too, right?” she choked through her sobs, stopping herself from clutching at his shirt.
