Exactly three days ago:
Venezio ran as fast as he could, weaving in between people. He was wearing a white shirt and a brown suit with cream coloured pants. He was clutching his briefcase to his chest as he weaved in between people.
“Sorry. Coming through.” he would shout as he bumped into people unintentionally. He ran through the automatic sliding doors of the hospital and made a sharp turn, pausing for a quick minute at the information desk. He pushed the person who was already at the information desk slightly to the left.
“It’s an emergency! Looking for a patient in the injury ward. Identity number: 369109” He said, passing her his business card. The lady at the desk checked his business card with information on her desktop.
“Ward 102. Bed 6” she said not looking at him. He shot her his million dollar smile before running off. “You can keep my business card.” he shouted without looking back as he ran to ward 102.
The person who was pushed aside gave him an annoyed and then bewildered look before tending to his business. The lady sighed, shaking her head before tending to the person who was there before him.
Venezio nearly ran into patients before reaching the right ward. Ward 102 was a public ward shared among six other people with light injuries. All the patients and their family members present were looking at Bed 6 terrified. A curtain was drawn around Bed 6 and the figure of two people behind it.
“Look if you do it one more time, I’ll make sure to do the same to you.” a girl’s voice spoke behind the curtain. It looked like the girl was holding a weapon to the throat of the doctor, threatening him. Venezio straightened his clothes, smelled his breath and patted his hair before walking confidently to Bed 6.
He pulled the curtain to one side without hesitation, exposing the two figures. The girl had wavy hair that curled neatly at her shoulders. She had eyebrows that were spread out thinly. Her eyes were big and hazel. She was wearing a jumpsuit with a number to it. The doctor was young-looking and bespectacled. His face was serious.
He was holding a cotton swab that was dipped in iodine. The girl had a wound above her right eyebrow and next to her lip. She was holding a mirror horizontally, pointed at him. He used the cotton swab to disinfect the wound above her eyebrow and she yelped in pain.
She looked at the doctor menacingly. “Can you do it more gently!” she yelled. The doctor was unaffected and looked bored.
Venezio cleared his throat. “Hey Venezio.” she said not even shooting him a glance. She looked into the hand-held mirror, inspecting her wounds.
“Now, that’s going to leave a mark.” she said indifferently. The doctor shook his head as he dipped another cotton swab in iodine.
Venezio sighed as he saw her wounds. He leaned in to look at both the wounds carefully. She met his eyes, staring intently.
“I thought I told you to stay out of trouble.” He scolded her his hands on his hips. The doctor grunted in agreement, making a ‘see I told you so’ face. She stuck out her tongue at the doctor.
“It’s not my fault.” She reasoned, her hands up as though she was surrendering.
“But a couple of girls were trying to smoke in the girl’s bathroom and I was determined to not let them get away with it.”
Venezio glared at her. The doctor gave her a disappointed look.
“What?” she shot back.
“The bathroom stinks of smoke.” she complained. Seeing that she was distracted, the doctor immediately touched her wound with the new cotton swab. She yelped and shot him an annoyed look. The doctor avoided her gaze and started to pack up all his things. He pulled out a plaster and placed it on the wound above her eyebrow.
“Gently!” she yelled at him. He chuckled before moving all his things. He bid them both goodbye before heading out of the room. Venezio watched as he left. He wanted to say something to him but his words failed him. He watched him leave.
“Are you going to make a move?Or are you just going to stare after him like that everytime?” the girl asked.
“Or should I help you with that?” she suggested. He looked at her before flicking her forehead.
“Not in a million years.” he said. She shot him an annoyed look. He gave one last glance at the door before handing her papers from his briefcase. He smiled as he handed them to her. She read it thoroughly before looking at him.
“I got in?”
“You got in!” he exclaimed happily.
She reached for his hand and pulled him into a hug. He was surprised but he closed his eyes and hugged her harder.
Through the small window of the door, the young doctor saw both of them hugging. He smiled as he heard them both exclaim excitedly. He knew the amount of effort and hardwork both had put in. As they were about to break out from their hug, he walked away and went on with his work, humming a tune.
