Students were then split into their various classes based on their enrollment. Some students who knew what field they wanted to go to went to their respective classes. For example, those who were interested in forensics had an anatomy class while those who were interested in being bodyguards had their self-defence classes. There were also students who were not sure of their specialisation and hence, had a chance to attend a variety of classes.
Tamaya was part of the group that hadn’t declared their specialisation yet. Students who were also part of that category boasted about how they could attend classes with her. Her first class of the day was Law: An Understanding. In this class students had to familiarise themselves with laws and be able to categorise offences.
Their professor gave a brief introduction before starting off with the lecture. Some students were busy with scribbling down notes, others were merely listening and a few were dozing off. Tamaya was attentive throughout the lecture.
“Now, can anyone tell me, if an item was reported missing and found in another person’s possession, what would the offence be?” The professor asked.
Tamaya’s hand shot up. He nodded at her to answer.
“Theft. ” she answered confidently, rehearsing the law of Theft from heart. The students were impressed by how she was able to quote the law by heart.
The professor gave an encouraging look. He was about to speak when he noticed another student’s hand in the air. It was a relatively tall and skinny boy. He nodded to him.
“Immediately concluding it as theft is more likely to result in wrongful accusation.” the boy answered. The professor smiled.
“ Possession can also mean being found in the other party’s belongings. If the evidence is not checked thoroughly, then it would be disregarding the possibility that the person was framed.” the boy continued.
The professor nodded in agreement. “And what is your name my boy?” the professor asked, impressed.
“Kai, sir.”
“Thank you Kai.” the professor replied before continuing with the class and explaining how he found Kai’s explanation more correct than Tamaya’s. Tamaya shot him a look, but he didn’t look in her direction, he was more focused on the professor.
During lunch time, Tamaya was at the cafeteria, surrounded by a group of girls who self-decided that they were her friends. They initially started the conversation by trying to get on her good side. They talked about how they felt her answer was correct and that not many people would think of the answer that Kai had thought of. One girl even praised Tamaya for her ability to recall laws, all the other girls nodded in agreement. Tamaya gave a friendly smile and they moved on to discuss other topics.
A short and skinny girl with long hair and bangs that covered her eyebrows was walking to the plate return area to return her plate. She accidentally tripped and bumped into one of the girls sitting at Tamaya’s table. She muttered a quick sorry before running off. All of the girls started to comment how strange the short skinny girl was, but Tamaya remained quiet.
Throughout the week, an additional student gained popularity. The boy was big and bulky. It was obvious just by looking at him, that he was physically fit. He performed particularly well in all the fitness tests and physical activities. Especially, self-defence class. He knew how to use his strength as an advantage and could take anyone down in seconds. His name was Diego and he was the envy of the majority of the boys in the cohort. Girls would leave boxes of chocolates and love letters outside the door of his dorm.
All of these three students that gained popularity were known as the ‘star 3’. In other words, they were more likely to graduate and pass every year with flying colours. Tamaya was in the library finishing up a class assignment. She left her seat for a minute to refill her water bottle, but when she came back, there was a yellow post-it stuck on her book.
She picked it up. It read “I know who you really are.” She turned around, looking for anyone suspicious in the library, but everything seemed normal. She crumpled the post-it and kept it in her pocket, hoping that no one saw what was written.
