Emma Wilson, taking advantage of Lily’s distraction, signalled Mark Johnson with a glance. Luckily, he was quick enough to catch on. "Alright, Emma, don't worry, I'll take good care of Lily."
Lily almost laughed in anger. What were these two playing at? Pretending she, a married woman, and Mark were the actual couple?
"You all leave!" Lily exclaimed.
"Lily, I'm leaving now, don't be upset, you're still weak," Emma said.
"Get out!" Lily grabbed a pillow from behind her and threw it forcefully at Emma.
Emma didn't dodge, taking the hit squarely, and immediately burst into tears. "Lily, I know you misunderstand and hate me, it’s alright, I’ll leave. Don’t be angry anymore, it’s not good for your health."
"Lily, you're being too harsh. Emma came to see you with good intentions, always putting up with you, and yet you treat her like this," Mark interjected, unable to watch any longer.
Now he understood why Emma always treated Lily like a sister, yet Lily despised her for not being good enough. It was clear that Lily had a princess complex.
Emma had been tolerant of her for so long because she was kind-hearted.
Faced with Mark’s accusations, Lily scoffed, "You, get out too, or I'll throw you out as well!"
She didn’t want to see them at all now. Just seeing them made her feel like she could die of anger at any moment. She needed to recuperate first before settling accounts with them.
"Lily, I understand you. After all, never being able to be a mother again is a fatal blow to any woman. I understand your emotional outburst," Emma said tearfully, dropping a bombshell on Lily, "I’ll just leave." She then headed for the door.
Lily, shocked by Emma’s words "never being able to be a mother again," trembled, "What do you mean? Explain clearly, what you mean by 'never able to be a mother'?"
Emma wore a triumphant smile, but turned around with a pitiful look, "Lily, don’t you know? Didn’t James tell you?"
Emma then feigned panic, "Sorry, Lily, I... I must have heard it wrong from my doctor friend. I'll go and clarify." With that, she hastily left the room.
"Lily, stand still, explain clearly, what you mean by 'never able to be a mother'!" Lily tried to chase after Emma but collapsed to the ground in pain as soon as her feet hit the floor.
The only response she got was the sound of the door slamming shut.
Mark stepped forward to help Lily up, "Lily, Emma said you're still weak. Let me help you back to bed."
"Tell me, what did she mean?" Lily, eyes red with anger, grabbed Mark’s collar.
"Emma said you’ll never be able to be a mother again. Her doctor friend told her personally," Mark added fuel to the fire.
"It's impossible, this can't be true, you're lying to me," Lily said in disbelief, shaking her head.
"Lily, it was James who caused your infection, making you lose the ability to be a mother."
The last strand of hope in Lily's mind collapsed, the news was a nightmare to her.
James had just forced her to abort a child and now caused her to lose the ability to be a mother forever.
She couldn’t accept it; the man who brought her this nightmare was the one she loved the most.
She became dazed, her grief and heartache seemingly finding no outlet.
Watching Lily on the brink of collapse, Mark embraced her in his arms.
