Chapter 14

Chapter 14

Dec 31, 2023

Thomas sits quiet as a church mouse next to me as I sit next to him on the couch. I can feel everyone's beady eyes on me as if we are drama people came out to see, 'Hey, did you catch up on what happened with Thomas and Lucy? Let me tell you!'

I try to cast off any thought, any visual of Thomas, but it's becoming increasingly difficult as he gets closer and closer to me, where his thigh brushing against mine. I give him a look that says do you value your life, which it must not because he has his book right up against his face, showing off every single tooth. He can't even read the book, it's so close.

This feels like those situations with children, where if they want attention so badly, they are willing to receive it  even if the response is negative. More than anything, I'm afraid this entire time I will be trying to block out Thomas while he will get more and more creative ways to annoy me.

"Thomas, I think now is a good time to start reading. What is going on with the book you're reading?"

He tilts his head towards me with a soft smile. He's easy to please.

"I chose a zombie apocalypse. It felt appropriate for the time of year."

Raising my eyebrows, I show off my skepticism, which he jumps on.

"How many zombie books or movies or games are set in the winter? Do the zombies just pop out in the snow? No, it's always beautiful and summer. At least when it breaks out. Therefore, this book will be both enjoyable and informative."

His logic is sound as far as I can tell.

"What are you reading?"

"Well, like you, I figured I would stick with the season, and that's why I picked a beach romance."

"Ahh, that's a very good call. Great minds think alike."

"Read your book, Thomas," I say this strongly, but the smile on my face betrays me. Oh, well. We'll be reading anyway.

Thomas snuggles even closer to me, but he is actually reading the book this time, so I settle in myself and crack open my book. Let's see how this story goes.

* * *

"Can you believe how stupid that is? She just needs to talk to him! Why is that so hard? She thought he didn't show up to their date by the pier because he was seeing that 'other woman,' but he didn't show up because his best friend got sick and was taken to the E.R.! How is this possible? How are they so stupid? Like she won't leave any opening for him to explain because she just wants to be hurt like why? You were the one begging for a second chance with him and for your dream summer romance! It's failing because of you, Martha," I rant to Thomas about all the elements of miscommunication as well as the pregnancy trope dropped in there. No, thank you!

"But isn't this the beach read you're looking for? Two grown adults who can't communicate are also forced to start a family together," Thomas's sarcasm is well received as I throw my head into my hand, wondering why I picked this book. Maybe I should stay away from romance for a while. If this is the kind of romance stories, I'm picking up, I will gladly return them.

"Well, how are the zombies? Are you informed enough? Will you give me your survival tips?"

His eyes go wide as if I told him the earth was flat. What did I say wrong?

"Lucy, the only way to prepare for the zombies is to have a bunker stocked full of everything you could," where he begins to count every single necessity on his fingers. "First is food, then water. Different clothes for different seasons. Don't forget medicine. It is also important to have various kinds of entertainment. Also, if you prepare correctly, you should also include an air conditioner and a heater. Your bunker must be undisclosed until the moment is right, and you inform only people you trust. If that doesn't work out, you die."

"We die? That's it?"

"Lucy, do you really want to survive the zombie apocalypse?"

"Maybe I do! I can be petty and stubborn plus once it's over, and most everything is destroyed I won't have most of the worries I currently have."

Thomas seems intrigued by my response, but he nods slowly, muttering to himself.

"I'm still not entirely sure, especially considering yeah, you won't have to worry about paying rent or figuring out if you want spaghetti or tacos. You'll be deciding: do I go out into zombie territory in the hopes of finding water, or do I go up the cold mountains in search of deer meat?"

"How about this? If the zombie apocalypse happens, if I prove myself trustworthy, I get to stay in the bunker with you, and once we run out of rations and other supplies in, let's say, five to ten years, I'll be the one providing for all that we need."

"It'll be like the way women would look out the window and think about their husband at war except I'll be thinking of you as you search and scour for meat and berries. Also, there's no window, and I'll just be staring at a wall."

The laugh we share is easy and light.

I lean back into the couch as I curl up facing Thomas as he shifts his body to face my direction.

"I really liked this activity, Thomas." I seem to catch him off guard as his smile fades, and he stares like a deer in headlights.

"I didn't know what to expect for today, and despite all that you did to annoy and tease me, today has been fun. I like spending time with you," I offer with as much sincerity as possible.

By his reaction, you'd think he's a schoolboy that just got told he's cute by his mom and her friends. All curled up with a bright blush on his cheeks.

"It's really nice spending time with you, Lucy. It's really fun to annoy you, and I'm excited we get to keep this up. You're the one who has to choose what we do next."

Hmmm what do we do next? What's next on the joy list?

I reach towards my tote bag carrying all of the major necessities such as books, lip gloss, tissues, snacks, and the list.

I read over the list over and over again, deciding what is the next best activity. I ask about his availability this week since the grand opening won't happen until Friday, so I'm available. Thomas lets me know that he'll be free all week after six, so as long as we don't mind it's in the evening, we should be fine.

However, we should plan something concretely for this coming weekend.

During this activity, we didn't really talk much, and it was much more of a parallel play situation. Of course, it was still enjoyable, but I like the idea of us talking more. I don't want to do something super strenuous for this, something that would be relaxing and fun.

"What about number 1? How about we have a picnic in the park this weekend? We could meet in the afternoon, have our little picnic. We could even go back to our spot at Starling Park," the more I say the more excited I get. I could make cute sandwiches with tiny cakes! Oh, and a fruit salad! Wait, what if I cut the fruit into cool shapes like what if I make a strawberry into a rose?

"That sounds fun, but shouldn't we make all the picnic stuff together?"

I practically gawk at him with surprise. He wants to help make our lunch?

"Oh, sure. Yeah, that'd be nice! Why don't you come over around noon on Saturday, and we can make our lunch then have our picnic?"

"Sounds like a plan to me, Lucy," he leans back into the couch with a smile on his face as he shuts his eyes. He looks sleepy.

"Did you also overthink about what activities we should do together?"

He lets out a short laugh as he shakes his head then looks at me.

"Nothing to overthink about. I made the perfect list."

"Show me."

My statement catches him off guard as he looks like he's been caught committing a crime. What are you hiding, Thomas?

"Let me see. You looked at my list without my permission, so it's only fair I get to see the list you made."

He shifts his body away from me, looking more and more guilty as he brushes it off, "I'd totally show you, but I don't even have it with me."

"Liar." I can sense he has it, but he won't show me. Oh ho, is he embarrassed? Now, I need to see it!

I consider the potential options of the list's undisclosed location. Thomas does not have a bag with him, so it couldn't be stashed anyway in such a place. His shorts have reasonably sized pockets as all men's clothes have, which is totally unfair by the way. He is not covering his pockets though or giving any indication that it would be in there. My best guess is that he stashed it in his book, and it could even be the very thing he is using as a bookmark for his book.

I avert my eyes away from his book as to not get his attention, but it is right in front of him on the coffee table, which means that even if I make my move now, it would guarantee that he would be able to make it to the book before me, ruining my chances of seeing his list.

Therefore, the only choice of action is to catch him off guard in order to get the book. One option could be that if I tell him to get me something from the counter, so while he goes off, I grab the goods. The likelihood of that happening is low considering I finished my lemonade, and it would come off suspicious if I send him to get something so randomly.

The next course of action could be that I drop something in close proximity to the book, so as I get the dropped object, I snag the book in too. Again, the likelihood of this working is extremely low since he would probably grab the book before I can reach for it, or he could also offer to pick up the object, blocking me off from the book directly.

My last choice would be to create a diversion that would get his attention while he's not looking, but the chances of such a diversion occuring would be limited. What would I even do? 'Hey Thomas, what's that?' Like he'd even believe that.

"What are you thinking about?"

I jolt backwards as Thomas closed in the distance between the two of us as I prepare for my mission. Jumping back seems to have startled him as he backs up with his hands in the air.

NOW!

Not wasting a second, I lunge forward straight for his book with my hands ready to close in on my target. My hands grab the book; however, I am still too slow. Thomas pulls me closer to him with his one arm while the other reaches for the book. He raises the book above both of our heads for an elevated advantage. Little does he know what I have in my back pocket.

I let my one hand go from the book as I begin to tickle his side in retaliation. Laughter bubbles out of him as he squirms away from my hand, but I fall into his own trap because he quickly begins to tickle me with his free hand.

Now, we are two grown adults in a coffee shop, tickling each other as we fight over a book. We must look so cool.

Thomas lets go of the book as he backs away from me while catching his breath.

HA, I am victorious! It'd feel a lot better if this wasn't so silly.

Catching my own breath, I open up his book, where his paper bookmark lies. I reach for the bookmark, and what am I greeted with?

A blank piece of paper.
