As I sat holding my amulet, I knew I had to go back to that watery town. Those people needed me although I don’t understand everything. I know they’re waiting for me, and I could not turn my back on them. I had started to believe this was more than just in my head, I was supposed to be there. I look over at Asten, he just stood, probably with a million questions running through his mind. I smiled, grip my amulet, and shout.
“Asten, sorry but I’ll be back.” I yell.
He screams something, but I don’t hear it clearly enough. As I grab my amulet I think of where I am, the stone building, the wailing behind, the muddy ground as the rain continues to fall from the sky. I think of him smiling cheekily at me, his dark features exciting and frightening in the same breath. As the quiet gradually shifts to the sounds of water droplets and the angry swirling of the sea, I open my eyes, release my pendant, and make my way toward the door that trapped the voices of those who had been caught in the worst of the flooding behind it. With the resolve to end the pain and suffering permanently, I enter.
Under the dim light was a corridor, but nothing else. It was dead silent and barren, the only sound was the faint background noise of people muttering, in pain or fright I was not entirely sure. I walked slowly down the sterile walkway, checking each door I came across. It felt like something was trying to intimidate me, to force me to stop what I was doing and turn around. I continued forward, and with each step, I could feel the pressure begin to fade, like a vacuum that was gradually losing suction. The screaming raises and becomes so loud I can feel the vibrations in my heart.
At one door, the sounds are so intense it stops me in my tracks. I’m not sure who would be behind this door, but still grabbed for the handle and turned, with a click I reveal to myself just how much damage a flood can cause. The person was sitting on a small cot in an off-white room that had a bright light above and a rolling cart next to the cot. There is nothing else. It was howling in pain that would trickle to a whimper. I can’t tell if the culprit is a man or woman, the face is fully covered in white bandages all the way down to the top of the chest. The hands, feet, and most of the legs are covered also. From the build, I think it look more like a man, but I can’t ask as the wailing was all the noise I heard. I glance around the room again to make sure I didn’t miss anything. As I did the door clicked open, I turned around. A young woman stood there, motionless, she looked over at the person and back at me, I could see the trails of tears left on her cheeks.
“Hello, I am sorry if I startled you, I heard the patient crying and decided to take a look.” I speak quietly.
I tried to put on my best nurse act, as I figured it would be the easiest way to nullify the situation and soothe the woman standing before me. She did not respond, just looked back and forth between me and the patient.
“I will get out of your way.” I explain.
I move forward to walk past her, she stop me.
“I am glad, you are here goddess, oh sacred one, I have been praying for your arrival.” she implores.
I stared at her dumbfounded, she’s like all the others knew who I was, and why I was here, and she was hoping and praying for me to come. I look over at the victim and back at her.
“Oh, sorry that is my husband, he cannot speak or see anymore as he was caught and pulled to sea because of me.” She weeps.
She started to tear up as she explained what occurred. I looked over at her husband, he had lost so much, but what was the reason?
“I’m sorry, what do you mean because of you?” I entreat.
“When the flooding started, I was bathing and did not know what was happening, I had a bad day and wanted to bathe in peace with a glass of wine. My husband rushed in and saved not only me but some things he knows I cherish, but it was at the expense of his own safety.” she bawls as she stutters each word.
I look at her closely and could see how much guilt she was carrying around; how painful it was for her. I looked back at her husband and saw in the corner of the room there was a faded image of the man I had seen before. There he was again, it felt like he followed me here. I wish I knew what his name was. He gave me a mischievous grin as usual but remained silent. I returned my focus to the couple in need. The woman was staring at me, waiting patiently.
“I can see how much his actions have hurt you, but I know he would not want you to feel that way.” I advise her.
“Oh, goddess, will you help my husband?” she begs.
“Yes, but I will need to have the room completely empty.” I explain.
I was not sure why I asked her to clear the room. When it was time to heal, my body took over knowing exactly what to do and how. The wife picked up any loose items and said she would be waiting outside, then she walked towards the door.
“Thank you for coming goddess, thank you for answering me.” she praises.
I was not sure if that was what I was doing, but I could focus on that another time. I walked towards the man wrapped in bandages who was near the man I felt a connection to. As I moved closer, I reached out to touch the bandages on the man’s hands, but he pulled away and it worried me that I was doing something wrong.
“You, don’t need to be scared of him or anything, you are powerful.” A stranger persuades.
This was the first time I heard his voice so clearly and he said more than a couple words. His voice drew me to his gaze. Hearing him tell me that felt familiar, I could see his image was more solid than before. I smiled at him to let him know I heard what he said, and I would acknowledge him more if there was not the pressing matter of the man in bandages. I moved close to the man on the cot and took his hands in both of mine. As I held his hands a strange language leaped from my lips and a warm light filled my palms. The man cried in quiet shudders as I pulled my hands from his and removed the bandages that were covering to reveal perfectly smooth healthy hands and arms. I looked up at my hitchhiking friend and was pleasantly surprised to find him even more solid. I looked back down at my patient and guided him to lie down. I pressed my palms to the top of his legs and feet and once again spilled that same strange language from my mouth. I did the same with the man’s head and this time I could feel my palms chill like holding ice cubes on a hot day. As I raised my hands and turned to see my stranger, I noticed he was fully solid, he winked at me and laughed.
“Well done, you will only get stronger, and when the time is right, I will be waiting for you.” He cheekily grinned.
I didn’t understand what he was saying, but before I could ask him what he meant about time being right he was gone. Damn, I still didn’t get a chance to ask him his name. I looked back over at my patient; he was resting peacefully; I removed the last of the bandages and looked upon a young man in his prime. I knew he would have his sight back the moment he opened his eyes. I crept towards the door and opened it quietly. The woman stood there staring at me.
“Don’t worry, he is healed and resting peacefully.” I state.
She was at a loss for words, but the tears in her eyes and the smile on her lips told me she was grateful and surprised. I stepped past her ready to leave and find the next person who needed my help. She gripped me from behind and with barely a whisper said.
“Thank you, Eset, my goddess, our savior Isis!” she calls after me.
I smiled about that and walked on. With those words, I could feel who I was, who I have always been, and I knew that I never had brown hair or amber eyes. No, my eyes are green, and my hair is dark like a raven. I was never a wife to Seth or mother to Erin and Eric. I always wondered why they don’t have any features from me. I felt that something strange was happening and I was pulled from where I am supposed to be, but I ignored those feelings. Now, I needed to find out why and who would do this, take my true existence, and change it. I held my amulet and thought about the shop, felt the steel chair under me and the room filled with a variety of things, I needed to speak to Asten he was the only person I could trust.
