DJ in the Market
They were walking down the dusty streets of Ferra market with their heavy souled expensive boots, crushing the small living organisms, that were eating leftovers on the earthy streets, and the small rocks of mud and sand that couldn’t help but get crumbled under the weight of people stepping over them.
People who can step over anyone they want without hesitation.
Crowds of astonished people were watching them with owl eyes, big and wide. Those people, higher in standard, were not meant to be leisurely walking through the market of mere peasants who live their lives either by begging, stealing or conning people.
But they were still there, still stepping up towards a certain destination.
Sharp eyes roaming over the asymmetric structure of Ferra market and its poor build, those three daunting men marched with authority with a sole expression substituting disgust on their faces.
Ferra market was an unpopular location on the outskirts of the main city, it was a place of druggies, thugs and local vendors who sell food and owned other small businesses to run their household. People living there were unforgiving and cruel, they didn’t have a heart to feed others in need when they were fighting for food for their children.
That’s how messed up that place was.
The former Lord of the biggest crime syndicate ‘Pyro’ was not impressed at all with his surroundings, he was nauseated, to say the least with how this place was turning out to be.
An absolute dump.
A kerchief made out of pure cotton was resting over his nose to prevent the dust from entering his mouth and nose while his eyes were protected with stylish shades. The old, daunting man stomped forward, clicking his expensive cane on the ground, only for the sake of his son.
Ezekiel Doukas was a man who had lived his life the way he wanted. He had everything he desired right at his feet. The biggest empire, a beautiful and caring wife and of course a very smart and brave son who will take the legacy of The Doukas empire to another powerful level.
Accompanying him were two other men, Nova Doukas and his son Leo Doukas. Nova and Ezekiel were blood brothers with a difference of five years. Being the older one of three siblings Ezekiel was the one taking after their father and ruling for the rest of his life.
Until his son, who was the one standing next in line, was ready to take over.
In his period of old age, Ezekiel wanted nothing but to retire with the satisfaction of his long-lived life and relax from his duties by giving his everything to the rightful owner who is his son. And that’s exactly what he did, only to face the worst time of his life when things didn’t turn out the way he expected.
The Lord went missing.
Nova, the younger brother, on the other hand, was content with the way his life was going. A beautiful wife who spent her day tweeting inside her house and a well-behaved, capable son. The man never fought for the place of Lord in the empire and he never let Leo fight for it either but when the Lord was abducted most unexpectedly right after two months of his rule, a sinister thought of conquering the most powerful crime syndicate never let him rest.
Greed does that to people.
Ezekiel was devastated after getting the most nerve-wracking news of his son’s abduction. The lord wasn’t a child of a small age; he was a man nearly thirty years old. It wasn’t possible to swipe him off the ground and ground him in some dark and damp place.
No.
The lord was a powerful, dangerous and sharp-witted man. He was known to be a beast when he fought, with no mercy or thoughtfulness whatsoever.
Those incredible traits of the Lord proved to be the first fact that crossed everyone’s mind after getting the dreadful news.
It also became the reason to start the investigation.
Ezekiel was ready to turn the world upside down in order to get his son back, his one and only treasure and for that he has done every possible thing he could.
From hiring of many capable minds to opening the flow of money like a feral river, he has tried everything in his power only to return empty-handed, leaving the man with dark eyes and worried wrinkles over his forehead.
Nova has comforted his big brother; he has spent time consoling the possible loss of his only child in many ways but Ezekiel was not sufficed. A hole in his chest caused by the longing for his son was nowhere to be mended.
The former lord was exhausted after months of searching for his son, he was so tired that accepting such a cruel reality, that his son might be gone, seemed easy to bear.
It was not until a ray of hope shined over the empire of Pyro with a newcomer in their lives.
A man named DJ.
DJ was the talk of the town for his stupid and worthless background and crooked record of his professional job. The man has conned many people in his life and surprisingly got away every time. He was clever from the talk it seemed.
One of the loyal men of the empire and right-hand man to Ezekiel informed him about the DJ character. Ezekiel was really not hopeful but soon he was very interested when Seva told him about the man’s sharp brain and the old man couldn’t refrain himself from trying his luck for the last time.
From then, a suitable time was decided and the trio of the empire went to meet DJ at his location.
The location was not what the Doukas’s expected, although the Ferra market was known to be the dump of the city but the scenery in front of them was beyond the concept.
From afar, a beaten-down building rose from the clouds of dust and Leo was the one spotting it first. He pointed it out to others and then ushered his father and his uncle towards the destination.
Upon reaching, the three grimaced seeing a butcher’s shop on the ground level of the building. With several dead animals, animal waste and blood scattered all around, a fat man was seated in the middle.
Ezekiel nudged his nephew and Leo nodded before going straight to the fat, half-naked man with a beard and a large butcher's knife in his hand.
“do you know any DJ here?” Leo asked with his eyes wavering over the dead meat cut into pieces. He jolted in surprise when the butcher flew his knife over the block of meat sitting in front of him with force, cutting it into two equal halves.
“HuH?...... What did ya sayee?” the man asked through his yellow teeth making Leo turn his away for a second. Pushing his hands inside his pants pocket, he looked at the obese man with a deadly expression.
“DJ!!!.....Do you know where he lives!!” Leo almost shouted and the man finally raised his eyes to look at the rude talker. But as soon as his landed on the men in front of his shop, his blood ran cold.
“L-Lord Doukas” the man stuttered eyes shifting between the trio watching him. Leo sighed in joy when he felt the desired reaction from his presence over people and nodded his head in affirmation.
“good memory you have there” Leo complimented with a bored expression, eyes boring back at butcher’s scared one.
“Now, about DJ?” Leo asked with a smirk over his handsome face. He knew what a daunting man he could be with his devilishly attractive features and his dark aura. He was born to be the part of the mafia.
“hurry up” Nova scolded from his son’s back and Leo raised his brow at the butcher. The fat man tried to mumble out something but another seller, from an adjacent shop, sauntered towards them cutting the butcher’s unspoken words.
“Lord Doukas” the man bowed.
“you are looking for disaster Jerky?” the man asked politely, almost pretentious. Leo turned towards him completely and nodded his head as he scrutinized the man from top to bottom.
“disaster Jerky?” Nova asked, learning an abbreviation of a unique name.
“yes, lord. He likes to be called like that, it’s his full name” The man smiled widely. Nova and Leo exchanged glances while Ezekiel watched the man uninterested.
“where his office should be?” Leo asked looking around the dirty street. He heard an unexpected cackle from the man who was laughing unnecessarily.
“right up here lord. Let me lead you?” he offered while pointing towards the second floor but stopped when Ezekiel pushed the end of his cane at the man’s chest, distancing the overachiever.
“we will find our way……now get lost” he roared with gritted teeth and the man scurried away.
The three of them made their way inside the building.
To no more surprise, the interior was as dirty as it was outside the run-down building. There were patches of pulled carpet on the stairs as well as in the lobby, several holes in the walls and graffiti stretching to no end.
Disgusting was the only word to describe such a place.
“Seva is dead if it’s a joke” Ezekiel mumbled under his breath as they started to climb up the stairs. He wasn’t the one to play when it comes to his time.
A sneaky mouse ran through between their legs making Nova shriek loudly as the old man stumbled on his feet, dancing around. He chuckled after noticing a small creature before meeting eyes with his brother.
Ezekiel looked unamused.
“it was a mouse” he stated as a matter of fact and earned a long, disapproving stare from his brother.
“sorry” Nova mumbled and Leo snickered behind his father.
“There!” Leo pointed out after reaching the second floor of the crammed building, catching both of his elder’s attention. He pointed toward the heavy grilled door at the very end of the hallway from where a nameplate, almost broken, was hanging out lighting a neon ‘J’ beside a flickering ‘D’.
Ezekiel nodded his head and they all marched towards the single busy door in the whole hallway.
Upon reaching, Leo almost gagged when his eyes fell over the door handle he was about to grab. There was a filthy, stinky cloth wrapped around the door handle tightly. A strong stench of maybe animal faeces reeked from the cloth making them all look at each other.
“I am not touching it” Leo announced and his father rolled his eyes.
“then knock on the door and don’t touch the handle” Nova suggested with an expression close to annoyance.
The single grill door didn’t really provide a flat surface on which they could knock.
Leo poked at the front of the door with his finger and Ezekiel sighed behind him. The old man pulled out his expensive-looking pen from his chest pocket and handed it to Leo.
“use this” he ordered.
Leo knocked on the door with the metal pen in a stab-like manner and they waited to hear anything from inside.
Nothing.
Leo knocked again but there was no response.
Ezekiel has had enough, he pushed Leo away and pounded on the grilled door with his cane not caring about the booming noise.
They heard movement on the other side of the door, a slight scrapping of maybe a chair before it all went quiet.
Behind the grilled door was a wooden door which swung open slowly, creating a dramatic sound in its awake. The door opened to the view of a wrecked office room, fallen chairs and scattered papers with small chips of wood shavings.
Was there a war inside that small room?
“is anybody there?” Nova shouted when there was nobody close to human welcoming them.
“w-who are y-you?” a beautiful voice emerged from the hidden corner of the room. The trio exchanged looks at the voice they weren’t expecting.
“We are here to meet DJ,” Nova said telling his purpose while Ezekiel observed anything that could be suspicious inside the room behind that grilled door.
“a-are you the m-money m-man?” the voice asked.
Leo was getting impatient for only hearing and not seeing anyone who possessed such a beautiful tone. He paced closer to the door and tried to peek inside.
“We are not any money man. Lord Doukas is here to meet DJ” Leo countered losing his cool and to his surprise, he saw a small pale figure peeking from behind the corner.
“l-lord D-Doukas?” the figure mumbled, walking cautiously towards the grill gate, fumbling with the door to get it unlocked.
He couldn’t let the lords wait outside the door more than they had already, now, can he?
Once the metal grill door was opened, the Doukas family observed the figure under their hard gaze.
Ezekiel was the one who noticed some things that were misinformed to him all this time.
The man they were here for was not a ‘man’ but a young lad with a pair of innocent doe eyes and a beautiful face. The boy looked like a kicked puppy with his ruffled hair sticking in all directions, his pink blotched cheeks and his red button nose, on which a pair of slim prescription glasses were hanging, as the boy sniffled from time to time scrunching his cute nose.
The boy was a pure definition of beauty. His alluring looks and captivating body were enough to sexualize that small self in one’s mind.
Never in their life had they come across someone as beautiful as that boy.
But there were things the Doukas’s had reservations about.
Seva told Ezekiel that DJ could help in saving his son from those cruel people who had abducted him and Ezekiel, after seeing that young boy with his own eyes, thought that it was hilarious to even think that this boy could do a mere job of household.
The boy looked homeless, he could not do anything for the people of their crime level.
“Are you DJ, Disaster Jerky?” Nova asked almost in a trance, his heart jumped in ecstasy when he saw a glimpse of raw beauty in the form of a dishevelled boy.
The boy frowned and Leo felt a pang of hurt and worry in his heart to see creases form over the boy’s forehead.
The boy had that effect on others naturally.
“y-yes…..I—I am D-DJ, and I-Its d-detective J--Jer--ry” the boy replied with his beautiful frowny face.
Ezekiel averted his eyes from that boy before a smile could escape his lips as he discerned a new fact that wasn’t conveyed to him.
The boy was a stammer.
