The monster within

Episode 8: Stalker

Episode 8: Stalker

Jan 09, 2024

Lilian decides not to spend the night, because she finds it uncomfortable being in the same apartment as Marianne. A small part of her still thinks that if she stayed any longer Marianne would've stabbed her in her sleep.

She's on her way back when she notices someone following her. But every time she turns around there's no one there, nor is she able to hear any steps behind her, but the feeling of being watched doesn't go away.

Maybe she's just imagining things after being kidnapped, but she doesn't feel comfortable in the darkness where she can't see anything.

Finally she passes the border leaving the district of Riat behind. The moment she steps into Gerin a dark figure appears behind her with a knife in their hand.

Blood is staining the grass underneath her as her head rolls off her shoulders. And a smile shows on the face of the person who's standing above her body.

"Getting careless, aren't we? But that doesn't matter I'll take care of it", the person says picking up the corpse with ease.

"So please come back soon, my dear."

By morning nothing is left, not even the blood stains. It's almost as nothing ever happened.

Cesar's first morning out of his cell is definetly not what he expected.

Instead of being able to sleep until nine Marianne comes inside his room at 05:00 a.m. and dumps a glass of ice cold water on his face. The second he gets up because of the shock he sees Silas sneering at him from across the room.

With that his chaotic morning begins, luckily he's still allowed to eat breakfast before being forced by Marianne to clean the apartment.

"I thought I am a guest", he mumbles while cleaning the window in the living room.

"You were, but now that you've overstayed your welcome you have to do some work as well, we're not a charity", Marianne says dusting furniture.

"So after 05:00 a.m. you've overstayed your welcome in this neighborhood?"

"Yeah, so get back to work, the window isn't going to clean itself", she says.

Soon the coffee shop opens and Marianne's going downstairs to help, leaving Silas and Cesar to clean everything.

"Did you also have to start working so soon?", Cesar asks.

"I'm twelve", the boy answers looking at him strangely.

"The question remains."

"No, I'm only helping out today, because your injured", he says going back to cleaning.

"Thanks, I guess. But I've been wondering..."

"What?", he asks slightly annoyed.

"Your eyes, I could've sworn they were golden and silver yesterday, but today they're black."

"Get used to it", he says.

"What?"

"My eye color changes from time to time, it's nothing to worry about", he explains.

"Is that so?"

"Yes, now get back to cleaning or we'll be standing here all day."

After two hours they've finally cleaned everything and come down to see how things are going in the shop.

There still aren't many people at this hour, normally most of them come in the afternoon to study or meet some friends.

After lunch Leila joins them, she's coming from private lessons with her tutor.

"I've been wondering, will you also start attending school?", she asks Silas curiously.

"I've never thought about it", he says.

"I guess that makes sense, but still if you ever want to I can ask my father to let you attend the same school as I do."

"That's very sweet of you, little shrimp, but I don't think that's a good idea", Marianne says worriedly.

"Right, I forgot", Leila utters disappointed.

"How about some hot chocolate and cookies?", Jasmine suggests after seeing her dejected expression.

"Tea for me", Leila says.

"Alright", she replies going back inside to get the cookies.

Silas doesn't seem to be all too bothered by the thought of not going to school. He never even expected to make it this far, so he's not exactly trying to press the matter. He's happy with how things are going right now, but nothing ever stays the way it is.

Leila also doesn't say anything more about this matter, the only person that's still bothered by it is Marianne. It doesn't leave her head a single time the whole afternoon and by then it's already time for Leila to leave.

Silas gives her some of the cookies he baked in the afternoon and she's about to go her own way when someone enters the coffee shop.

It's one of her escorts who came looking for her because she took longer than usual to leave.

But Silas can't shake of the thought that something's wrong. Ever since Leila began visiting the coffee shop regularly someone started watching their every move. The question is whether they're just making sure that Leila's safe or if they're suspicious of them.

He feels someone's eyes on him, but there's no one there aside from the trees. Chances are that whoever is watching them is currently hiding in those trees to avoid being seen.

The thing is that Silas know this gaze from somewhere he just can't seem to remember from where.

Marianne who's watching him also notices that something is wrong. His eyes have started glimmering in a dark red, almost black if she didn't know what to look for sure she wouldn't have noticed it either.

Hiding in the trees there's a man watching them.

`Why didn't father just ask Leila to investigate them, she's there everyday anyway!´

It would be much more efficient if she did it so he could do something else instead of coming down here everyday and hiding in trees.

What bothers him even more is that the kid with crimson hair seems to have noticed his presence. He's looking straight at him more often than not, in a way that it can't just be a coincidence.

It's already dark and now that his sister is gone he's finally able to leave as well. Just then he feels a shiver running down his spine. When he turns around he sees his sister standing under tree glaring at him.

Her hazel eyes are glowing and there's a weak killing intent hiding in them. Her menacing look is only enhanced by the dark curls falling in her face and the dark tan of her skin.

Whenever he looks at her he can't help but shiver. The burn scar reaching from her chin to the beginning of her hairline on the left side of her face is haunting him every night in his sleep so much that he feels paralyzed everytime he sees it in real life.

Quickly he comes down from the tree and walks towards her carefully in order to have at least a five foot distance between them. Like that he'd at least have a chance to run if she decided to attack him.

"Let's go. When we're home you better have a good explanation for this", she says in a sharp tone.

Without muttering a single word in return he follows her back home.

`If I tell her some lie now she's definetly going to skin me alive later on when she finds out the truth. This is all father's fault!´

The rest of the week goes by rather peacefully. Silas still feels someone watching him, but it's not as threatening as before. If it continued like this maybe they'd be able to go out on tuesday without being followed.

Cesar's recovering pretty fast and if there aren't any complications he'll be good to go in a few weeks.

While everything is going pretty smoothly for them he has to fight with some problems...

Marianne and Silas have already caught their attention and now they want to know who they are and why he was so desperatly looking for them until a few days ago.

Luckily none of them have realized yet, what exactly has been going on in the Radwill manor over the past few decades. But he won't be able to fool them much longer and when they lift the veil they'll take him down, leaving no one behind who once stood by his side.

If he succeeds in guiding their attention in another direction in this meeting he'll be able to buy her a few more months before being found out.

Holding on to that thought he takes a deep breath and opens the doors to the hall. Confidently he strides to his throne and sits down, every bit of warmth leaving his eyes.

"Let's begin the discussion."
