All of them had to leave early the next morning. They were the group that started their assignment the earliest. All of them were rushed out of their dorm, throwing whatever they could into individual duffel bags, before sitting in a van that took them to the prison.
The other four members, including the senior she recognised, were in the van too. The ride was silent. No one dared to look at each other. Tamaya was seated by the window watching the view outside. She looked to her left and saw Kai sleeping with his arms crossed across his chest. They didn’t say anything to each other after finding out they were heading to the prison.
Everyone else in the van was either fidgeting or had a nervous look on their face. Tamaya sighed as she went back to looking outside the van window. The thoughts inside her head were churning. Her gut feeling was telling her something was definitely up, but she didn’t know what exactly was planned.
After a long bus ride, they finally reached the prison. The van stopped outside the high metal gate. All students were instructed to alight the van with their belongings. After everyone had vacated, the van left immediately.
The students were then made to pull out their id cards that were given to them by their university. Their bags were then put through an x-ray machine. They were then made to walk through a metal detector, followed by a final pat down carried out by the officer at the other end.
Kai walked through the metal detector and the alarms blared loudly. All the guards looked at him suspiciously. He was then made to step away from his group and pulled into a separate room for security check. Tamaya watched him enter the separate room, unfazed. Everyone else in their group looked terrified.
The rest of the group were given the greenlight to enter the prison. Kai was thus left behind. They were then walked through even more metal gates and metal detectors. It was clear to everyone why this prison was the most high security prison that ever existed in the whole country.
There were guards stationed at each gate. At each gate, the guard who was leading them would switch positions. Thus, they had a different guide each time. After what felt like forever, they finally reached what looked like the final gate. Standing by the gate, there was a man dressed in a slightly more pressed police uniform attire. He had a silver badge on his chest. Tamaya noticed that he was the only one smiling out of all the guards they had met.
He also had a rather toothy grin.
“Welcome.” he smiled, baring his teeth.
“So which one of you are the lucky ones who almost missed the chance of being under my care?” he said cunningly, looking directly at Tamaya.
Tamaya looked at him unfazed. Everyone else gulped. He laughed slightly, shaking his head as though indicating it was just a joke.
Without saying much, he ushered everyone through the entrance and immediately started his tour, not looking nor waiting to see if the group was following him.
