I Expected More From The Witcher

I Expected More From The Witcher

Jan 20, 2024

So, as of 1/20/24, I have one episode left before Season 2 of The Witcher. However, I'm watching it with my mother, and before we even started the series, we agreed that we would stop at the first season, and she could just tell me what happened if I ever got curious. But, first, let's get some things out of the way. I watched my mother play The Witcher, which has much more material, so I'm a little biased. Also, I want to make this clear, since I'm gonna say a lot of stuff in this episode; I do not hate this series or the actors. I think that Henry Caville was perfect as Geralt. But, I think he's hot as heck, so maybe I'm more biased than I thought. So, let's start the episode. Why did I expect more from it?

WHERE IS GERALT, EVEN?!

If you play the game, you're gonna get more combat than lore, but there's still a lot of focus on Geralt. So, guess who is barely present in the second and, hell, first season? That's right, Geralt! Whenever there's a rotating cast in a show, I always jokingly say "Can we get back to the character I care about now?", but I said that seriously while watching! Yennefer is such an awful person, and Cirilla is so rude and ignorant that I don't care about either of them! Honestly, I forgot Jaskier existed because there was more focus on those two than him and Geralt.

CONFUSING AF TIMELINE

The show goes back and forth between the present day, and before Nilfgaard invaded Cintra, resulting in Queen Calanthe's death. However, since the show has a very cool color scheme in both timelines, there isn't an exact way to figure out your timeline, resulting in me frequently getting confused and having to ask my mum about what the heckity heck was happening. So, not the best way to make a good show. Plus, it's just infuriating how coincidental so many things in this show are. For example, for most of the present-day section of the show, Geralt is trapped in the dungeon because Queen Calanthe wouldn't let him claim the Law of Surprise. Until Nilfgaard invaded, and then he escaped and rode off in the EXACT OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF CIRILLA, THE PRINCESS HE WAS SUPPOSED TO FIND AND PROTECT, but no! Calanthe's love for Cirilla was so strong, she just had to keep her from the only person who wasn't trying to murder her!

Also, Mother and I have confirmed we're not going to watch the last episode of season one. We're now trying to find some more medieval fantasy series to watch, but since there seem to only be movies or good shows from the 90s-80s that were canceled, we are struggling a bit. If y'all have any recommendations, please go ahead and tell me! I desperately want to play D&D, and since no one wants to, fantasy films and shows are the only things satisfying my Dungeons and Dragons cravings.
