He sat down in the main room on the couch and read the information on the portal. He thought it would take a while, but he spent the rest of the day working on it until late in the evening. Thanks to the fact that he was a vampire himself, he had access to the part of the portal that was reserved only for Night Creatures. This was how everyone who had some supernatural abilities was called. The website itself was an amazing source of knowledge. There was everything here, posts about new tasks, discussions about tasks, trends, and other useful things for hunters. He also learned that the Order of the Gray Wardens is hated by both Hunters and Night Creatures. Another thing he needs to ask. The incident at the mall was still fresh in his mind. Why did the Watch kill the Night Creatures? From what he read, they were hiding from them. Reading about it gave him chills. This wasn't what he expected. It was downright overwhelming. He scrolled quickly through people's stories, but all of them were terrible.
Additionally, there were various gossips and a ranking of Hunters who are currently the best in a given rank. Hunters had a rank, everyone, and it depended on which orders they had access to. Posts with orders included requirements regarding who could do it. Ranks were given in stars, five being the lowest and one being the highest.
"So I'm at the bottom since I have five," he said quietly to himself as he looked through his profile. There were five silver stars next to his name. He looked up Clare's profile. Luckily, she added him to her friends' list. He also saw silver stars on her but only two "um Clare Westwood. She has the same last name as Terry? Are they family?"
"No," replied a familiar voice.
"Clare!" Jayden almost screamed, he didn't even hear when she came "I...I didn't want to, I mean..."
"Terry adopted me, that's why I have his last name," she said without emotion. Her voice was feminine and a little low. Firm.
"Oh…that was nice of him?" the boy wasn't sure what to say and as always it came out a little awkward "I mean! I'm sorry too...what happened to your parents?"
"You're cute, you know that?" she smiled slightly, which made the young vampire blush slightly. "As for my parents..." she paused for a moment, as if searching for the right words, "I don't remember them."
" You do not remember?"
"NO. Just a little father, I know he was. As for the mother - another pause, she spoke without emotion and yet it was obvious that it was a difficult topic - she died. Father too. I lost them when I was, well, ten years old. "Now it's easier for me to imagine Terry as a dad," she mused. There were a lot of things she didn't say, he could feel it. You could feel a certain sadness in her voice.
"I'm sorry, I didn't expect this."
"Don't worry, that's life. I'm sorry, because of me you can't be with your people" She smiled, but sadness appeared on her face. Jayden also looked sad, but wanting to change the subject, he showed her the communicator. He wasn't able to talk about his family yet.
"Can you help me understand the Night Beings? There are many here, some rankings, 'X's', and stuff like that. I don't understand."
"X? These are the so-called "unknowns", i.e. people who are a mystery. They are strong, even very strong, and practically little is known about them. They are legends of hunters. Something like Yeti, except that they exist." Jayden entered the tab about them and there weren't many people mentioned there, less than fifty.
“You have a description for each one, more or less who it is. Such speculation. Unfortunately, nothing is confirmed in their case.”
"Hmm, 'Thunder'" Jayden chose randomly and started reading, "Guardian. Belonged to the Sixth Division. Most likely a hybrid. Teenager. Uses lightning magic. Status unknown. Very dangerous," he looked at Clare, "quite little information. And each of these is such?"
"Yes. Check out the hybrids, and mages, there is more information there. Oh and yes, they are also divided by ranking, you have the top 10 strongest there. At least according to Johnny and the rest of the Hunters," Jayden first went to the mages tab and grimaced a little.
"Mages and Elemental Mages?"
"That's the point. It's easier with vampires and werewolves. Yes, furries also exist and yes, they don't like vampires. Besides, the truth is that no one likes anyone," she laughed, "magicians are all kinds of people gifted with magic, and elemental mages only use a given element. For example, a water mage will only control water. And a mage, um, they do weird hocus pocus? Casts spells and stuff like that. Oh, that's right, Felix is a mage.
"Felix? But what kind of magic does he do?"
"Portals," she smiled, "that's magic too. It doesn't always have to be, you know, casting spells with a wand. Felix doesn't look like it, but he's a powerful magician. Just an idiot. Like Johnny."
" Aha...you don't like him, do you? " Jayden smiled slightly. He noticed that the girl often teased the two of them. But these aren't threatening jokes, but I respect both of them very much.
"Felix and Johnny," she began slowly, "are irritating me. They're like…siblings. Annoyances. Very much. Okay, what questions do you have next?"
"Aaah, yes, yes," Jayden looked at the communicator, "vampires, hybrids, and werewolves. So what, all those things exist? And they have these rankings, too."
"Yes and yes. Let Vince tell you more about vampires. Werewolves, dogs on steroids. Very territorial. And they stay in groups. They're cool, to be honest. Vampires are annoying, they're always so stuck up" she looked at the blonde "No offense."
"I'll try not to be pompous then?" Jayden laughed lightly, "What about hybrids? I read that they are just 'hybrids'."
"Yes. Hybrids are wild cards in this whole game. Half human and half mage is a hybrid. You can have many such combinations. The difference is that the hybrid will be weaker than, for example, a mage. So if it is a hybrid of a water mage, then he'll be able to, I don't know, just make bubbles. Something like that."
"Okay... I think I understand" Jayden looked at the ranking, section 'X' "but here, in this ranking, practically most of them are hybrids. And when I read a little about the Guard... I guess there are only hybrids there too... so I don't understand anymore"
"I guess," she replied with her typical smile, she wanted to explain everything to him in a quite understandable way. It must have been difficult for him. As a human, he lived in blissful ignorance. “Hybrids are only supposed to be weaker, but there are many that are practically on par with mages. Or even stronger. As for the Guard. Yes. "It's entirely made of hybrids"
"But why?" he asked honestly. He also saw that the brunette was thinking for a moment to choose the words "because they are the wild cards?"
"Yes. You could say." it was kind of true. The vampire sensed this and grimaced a little at the thought that he was hiding something from him. “The guard is divided into divisions. From one to two o'clock. And believe me, everyone who is in the top ten is powerful. Very. And their captains and vice-captains are - " she frowned "They are real monsters" her voice was bitter "Even the most powerful Beings are afraid of them"
"That powerful?" Jayden was surprised by this fact. He saw Clare's eyes. She must have experienced a lot and seen what happened to them.
“Only advice. Stay away from the Wardens. They will kill you without hesitation," she said sharply, without emotion. It gave him chills.
"It sounds scary... I'm starting to understand it now." He had in mind the two from the shopping mall.
“And why are the Wardens…why are they attacking the Night Creatures?”
“Because they are motherfuckers”
“Okay...but why? It's just the police, right?"
“No… for the people, yes, they act as police, but do you know what they do?”
"It's not..." he started to think and had only general information "They always said it was additional help for the police or services" The brunette laughed bitterly to herself when she heard these words. She looked at him coldly.
“The Wardens... They were created to eliminate the Night Creatures. They call it 'keeping the balance' or 'protecting people' but the truth is they are ruthless killers” Her voice was devoid of any emotion. The boy thought for a moment. This was shocking news for him.
"What about you? Are you a magician?" the boy changed the subject to somehow improve the atmosphere in the room.
"No. I'm a hybrid."
"Yes? And which one?"
"I'm not entirely sure," she said thoughtfully, "my mother was a magician. And my father... I don't know. I think he was a hybrid too. But unfortunately, I don't remember him."
"I'm sorry," he said bitterly, this topic was difficult for him because he had lost a family himself. Pain gripped his heart. He misses them so much.
"As I was saying" she looked at him coldly with sadness in her eyes "Terry is like a father to me. I owe him a lot" She smiled "If it wasn't for him...I would be a completely different person. He was the one who showed me how to be a human" Jayden looked at her, slightly confused by what she said. He thought she must have had a difficult childhood.
"It's great that you met such a person, that you met Terry," he said, embarrassed, "Clare smiled at him. She didn't want to continue the topic. Jayden would have a lot to think about and still had a lot to learn. He began to wonder if he even he will cope in this new world, in this new reality. He was afraid. He was afraid of all this, it was overwhelming. But he hoped that he could trust Clare. At least he wasn’t alone.
