Sam nervously made her way downstairs to eat breakfast before her first day. Well, maybe afternoon was a more appropriate description, since she was going in for training after school. Yesterday had been very stressful and tiring, although she barely did anything. Heer parents decided to have a long talk with her after they got home, which had made her very mentally tired.
It mostly consisted of them expressing their worries and overthinking while Sam numbly pretended to listen as she reflected on the events that happened earlier that day. Thankfully, her parents had realized that they were overwhelming her and had stopped their nagging (after 36 minutes of expressing their concerns). She was glad to finally have a little peace and quiet after all the tension.
Sam's parents both had work early in the morning on weekdays, so it was just Sam at home. She was still nervous for her first time receiving official and professional training. What if she wasn't good enough? Was there something that she'd somehow been doing wrong her whole life? She sighed as she finished her breakfast, which consisted of some cereal and eggs.
She had a tendency to overthink, which she definitely had inherited from her parents. She loved them and all, but sometimes they were really too much and put too much stress and pressure on her unknowingly through their 'talks'. Sam quickly did the dishes, and went to pack her bag. She'd made a sandwich earlier for lunch. She knew her meals probably wasn't that nutritious, but there was nothing she could do with her busy parents and busy schedule.
Sam took the bus to school, and always made sure to leave the house early to not be late since public transit wasn't always reliable. She got to school 5 minutes early to put her stuff away, and went to her first class. This semester, she had Math, Science, Socials, and English. Class was merely an exercise for her, since she never really learnt anything she didn't already know.
She only raised her hand to answer the harder questions since she didn't want to seem like a know-it-all and mostly kept to herself. She had a few friends in each class and did most of her group projects with them. School was pretty dull for Sam but it was survivable and she didn't really mind.
Before she knew it, half the day was over already. She was having lunch with her friends when they suddenly bought up the topic of future careers. Brandon, her friend from English, was talking about his girlfriend before bringing up that he recently got a job.
"I recently got my first job as a part time cashier. I know it's not much, but it's a good start I guess. Do you guys have jobs yet?" Sam wondered whether she should tell her friends. For some reason, she didn't think that was a good idea. While she thought, her other friend, Veronica, replied that she had been a background actor when she was younger.
Everyone thought that that was pretty cool and started asking her about it. Meanwhile, Sam was still thinking about whether she was even allowed to tell other people about her job. She started getting anxious and realized that Mr. Rodrigo still hasn't told her about the situation his daughter was in. Apparently, she was in great danger. Why didn't I ask him before? She wondered.
Now, she was filled with even more anticipation for her first day.
Sam stood outside the tall skyscraper, ready to go her. Her nerves felt fried and she didn't know what to expect. All Mr. Rodrigo had told her was to come to the same location on Monday for her first day and that he would give her a through tour. He also promised to fill her in on the necessary information she needed to know and to answer any questions she had.
Sam wondered whether all CEOs greeted and showed their employees around personally. That was definitely not normal. She supposed that he was just trying to make her feel welcome and safe, since she was pretty young and inexperienced. But she also realized how important she was to him and the burden that had just been put onto her shoulders. All this was happening in her head as she walked in. She tended to overanalyze things right before they happened.
Cedric was there in the lobby, probably waiting for her. When he saw her, he warmly congratulated her for getting the job as though they were old friends, and told her that he would tell Mr. Rodrigo that she was here. Then he keft, leaving Sam in a daze. She didn't even get a chance to react except mumble thanks before he left. He's just very enthusiastic, she mustered.
He came back very quickly with Mr. Rodrigo, who was dressed in a different yet equally as fancy suit as the last time they'd met. He smiled upon seeing her and Cedric quietly left as he walked towards her. Sam also smiled weakly back at him as he said, "Welcome to the company, Sam. I look forward to working with you and to have you protecting my daughter. Now I can finally sleep without worrying about her."
He motioned for her to follow him, and they walked to the elevator together. As they went through the tour, he was calm and easygoing, answering her questions with ease and made sure she understood where all the key places were. He was very confident, nothing like the nervous man he'd been when her parents were signing the contract.
As they approached his office, which was on the top floor, she decided to drop the bomb and finally ask him about his daughter and the situation. His whole body stiffened and he suddenly seemed nervous. He didn't say anything for a while, before pulling her into his office. He told her to sit down first, as it was complicated and extremely confidential.
Sam gulped, and tried to ready herself for the news.
Sam, short for Samantha, is a troublemaker at school, and has no set career or dream. But, she can fight. And so, her parents decide to try to get her a job as a bodyguard. Sam reluctantly agrees, and somehow lands a job at the biggest corporation, as the bodyguard of a very wealthy and influential woman. What wasn’t part of the job description, was that her boss liked to get drunk. And the things she did when she was drunk, well, that varies for each bodyguard. No wonder the others quit! What will happen to Sam?
