Years before the ascent of duke Camio…
In a dimly lit chamber of Schameister Castle, the air was heavy with the scent of lavender and old parchment. Camio sat at the large wooden desk, the flickering candlelight casting shadows across his troubled features. He was poring over the ancient tomes and scrolls, searching for answers that had long eluded him.
Gomory, his father, had been a man of honour and integrity, revered by many. His sudden death, along with that of Camio’s mother, had been shrouded in mystery. Officially, they had perished in a bandit attack on the road, but Camio had always harboured doubts about the official account. What sort of bandit could fell a swordsmaster escorted by so many knights?
As he delved deeper into the archives, Camio unearthed a letter, its edges yellowed with age, stained mahogany by an old blood splash. It was addressed to an underground boss of the capital, barely readable, and signed by none other than the late Emperor himself. The contents – or what was left of them – were shocking. The letter revealed a forced relation between Gomory's wife and the emperor, casting doubt on the paternity of Camio himself. It spoke of a plot to eliminate Gomory and his wife to ensure the secrecy of the affair and the legitimacy of the imperial heirs. The then emperor spoke casually to the felon – Camio concluded he was in control of the nefarious affairs of the technically illegal slave trade. It was also clear this was not the first assassination commissioned by the crown.
Another document showed a list of influential people Gomory had suspected to have been killed under imperial orders. The list spanned many pages and lead back through three centuries of Alluin’s history.
Camio's heart pounded in his chest as he read the damning words. Anger and betrayal welled up inside him. He had always suspected that there was more to his parents' deaths, but this revelation cut deeper than he could have imagined. And he might even be related to those who committed such crimes.
With newfound determination, Camio vowed to overturn the murderous tyranny of the imperial family.
