Laughing to myself as I began my math homework, I remembered checking in to see if Sky had made it home safe only to discover him doing math problems in his head. Midway through my English homework a little while later, I decided to check on him again only to hear something about a romantic comedy that made me laugh again just before he complained he was going crazy. Cutting the connection, I laughed aloud at how crazy I was making him. Getting up to stretch and do the rest of my night time routine, I kept thinking about my new friend.
“God, why do I feel so attracted to him? It's not like I could actually have him since he's destined to be with someone else. So why?” I kept thinking. Some small voice in the back of my mind asked “what if you could have him? Would you want him? Would you stay with him forever despite being heir of the Earnest Hearts Coven?” Immediately, I knew my answer to all those questions was a yes but the problem was I couldn't. As I brushed my hair, my mind went back to the conversation I'd had with mom earlier and her odd answer.
“I'm sorry sweetheart. I know you do everything you can to stay on her good side but it all feels worthless” she'd said.
“You're right it does feel pointless. I wanna know why she hates me so much” I'd said watching my mom flinch as I'd said the last.
“I didn't realize you'd figured that out” she'd murmured looking at her hands.
“Well, I'd have to be blind not to mom. She doesn't treat Senan or any of the others that way. It's just me” I'd said a little irritated. After a few minutes of silence, mom had said “well, I'm sure you'll find out soon but I can't tell you that. Even if I did, you probably wouldn't believe me. So, it's better for you to find out on your own.”
Just then the realization hit me that my seventeenth birthday was in two days. Looking in the mirror, I wondered if it could be possible that's what mom had meant. If maybe... just maybe, I was so drawn to Skyler because I was part wolf and he was my mate. Rolling my eyes, I thought “yeah right, now who's the crazy one.” Shutting off the bathroom light as I left, I sat on my bed turning on my alarm before shutting off the table lamp plunging the room into total darkness. As I drifted off to sleep, a dream began almost immediately...
I'm running through the forest but my perspective seems lower than it should be. Glancing down, I slow to a walk as I realize I don't have feet but silver colored paws are visible where they should’ve been. Lifting my right hand, the right paw moves. Quickly glancing around, I realize I'm in the glade where Sky and I had talked earlier as I catch the scent of caramel and chocolate telling me I'm not alone when I spot two vibrant purple eyes in the darkness at the edge of the clearing. Relaxing a little, I recognize Sky and slowly work my way over to him only to see his eyes changes from their usual warm violet to a darker more vibrant one of anger. Stopping, I crouch down trying to make myself small in hopes of lessening his anger as I pause and wait. After a moment, I hear him speak but it doesn't sound like Sky.
“Who are you?” he asks. Realizing I can't talk in this form, I think “I'm Zane. We met here earlier tonight.”
“You cannot be Zane despite your familiar scent. You are a wolf. Who are you?” he asked angrily.
“I swear, I'm Zane. I can kind of prove it. Earlier when we met here it was only the two of us, right? Well, we talked about how I surprised you this morning in English and about how Jared and his mate, Kinsey, are your only real friends before I asked you if you wanted to be friends too” I explained knowing that only someone who was here would know all that.
“How are you in wolf form then?” he asked as confused as I was.
“I honestly, have no idea. I went to bed and here I am” I shrugged.
“Well, your wolf is beautiful though I'm surprised your pelt doesn't match your human hair and your eyes are gold instead of blue. Do you know his name?” he asked watching me.
“Yeah, I thought that was odd. Wait, my eyes are a different color too?” I said glancing down again then realizing what he'd asked, added “what do you mean?”
“Our wolf halves have names as well since they are an additional soul inside our bodies. My name is Percy and I am Skyler's wolf. So, do you know your wolf's name?” he asked again. Thinking for a moment, I said “not really but the name Talon keeps playing through my head.”
“Hmm that must be it then. It's really weird for you to have a wolf form since you're a warlock” he said cocking his head to one side.
“Yeah, I don't understand it either” I said as a faint beeping sounded.
Jolting awake, I sat up quickly realizing I was still in my room but as I stared at my reflection in the mirror on the back of my door my eyes widened in shock. Staring back at me were the most vibrant golden eyes where my icy blue ones should've been. Blinking, my eyes changed back to their normal color just as I noticed the streak of silver colored hair by my right ear.
“Oh my god, what the hell is happening to me?” I asked aloud as someone knocked on my door.
“Honey, it's mom. It's time for you to wake up” she said before cracking the door to peek inside. As she looked at my face, a look of worry and confusion crossed her features before she noticed the streak too. Gasping and covering her mouth, I heard her whisper “it's starting” before she turned and left my room slamming the door behind her. Dazed and confused, I shut off the alarm that was still blaring and started getting ready for school. As I left my room headed for the front door, I was met with odd looks and worried expressions.
