They walked across the base to the archery field on the opposite side of the base to their cabins. Wolfgang and Baror joking around on the way there, Afkarr reading a book while walking, and Spirit making sure Afkarr does not trip or fall into anything.
The archery field was vast as the grass was long and green. There were big targets far ahead and bows and arrows near the warriors. As they four stood there many started to fire their shots, they all shot with such precision that most of the arrows landed at least a thumb’s length away from the center of the target.
Then Spirit, Afkarr, Baror, and Wolfgang were up, Spirit stepped up nervously he had never fired an arrow before and did not know how to use a bow. He looked over at Baror who was firing perfect shots but was too nervous to ask for help. Baror looked at Spirit and realized he had been staring at him.
“ Do you need any help?” Baror said, “Oh, right you don’t know how to fire an arrow here let me show you how, alright so you want to stand with your feet shoulder length apart and your feet should be here,”.
“Does this look good?”.
“Yes just move your feet a tiny bit to the left,” Baror said as Spirit shifted his feet to the right, “I said left,”.
Spirit quickly shifted his feet to the metal armor leaving a divot in the ground as some dust kicked up.
“Alright now hold your bow gently,” Baror said, “put the arrow on the tip side facing the target and feather side facing you, put your first finger above the arrow and your other two below it, now pull back your string so that your hand is near your chin and let go,”.
“Um,” Spirit said, he had done all of Baror’s instructions correctly but could not let go, it was like his hand was stuck to the arrow.
“Let go of it,”.
“I can’t,”.
“Why not,”.
“I don’t know my hand won't move,”.
“Then move it,”.
“Dude I just-,” Spirt said as he accidentally let go of the arrow and it went flying out, but it landed just in front of the target.
“Well, that was good for a first try,”.
“That was, AMAZING, I want to do that again,” Spirit said as he excitedly reached for an arrow and shot at the target, this time hitting it, but near the edge.
“Oh my, well I guess I know you like archery”
“Ja, that was nice”
“Alright next we'll be doing agility training,” Afkarr said.
“Cool, you’ll either love or hate this Spirit,” Baror said as the four of them walked across the base to the agility course. The agility course had many hurdles to jump over, many trenches to crawl under, and one big wooded cliff for them to jump off of.
They maneuvered through the obstacles with no issue, and Baror helped Sprit through the mechanics of the obstacles. Baror and Sprit made it to the jump first, Baror immediately jumped and landed on his feet.
Spirit looked down, he remembered the words of the old woman and shuddered in fear of the big fall he would have to do. Afakrr noticed Spirit as soon as he got up there.
“Spirit, jump, you’ll be fine,” Afkarr said as he walked up to Spirit.
“Are you sure? It’s a big fall,”
"Jump Spirit!" Wolfgang said.
“Ja, we’ve done this thousands of times and have been fine, just land on your feet and you’ll be okay,”
“Alright,” Spirit said moments before he jumped over the ledge.
Spirit’s feet reached the ground first a sharp pain like a thousand needles shot through his feet and legs. Afkarr was correct he was unharmed from the fall, soon Afkarr and Wolfgang followed him.
“Well that was not so bad,” Spirit said, “but my legs and feet hurt,”.
“Ja, try going in with your toes first instead of the soles of your feet, it will make the fall more manageable,” Afkarr said.
“Alright let’s go to dinner,”
“Ja, I am so hungry right now,” Wolfgang said.
The knights then walked through the dirt roads of the base into the wooden mess haul with its bright torch-lit hall and long wooden tables and benches. Along the tables were plates and cups filled with beer. The line was ordered by cabin number but at dinner, the order was in reverse so cabin number 50 was first and they were near the end.
“So nice day at training?” Spirit said.
“Ja, I think you did pretty well on your first day,” Baror said, “I mean I’ve already seen you do things you otherwise would be too scared to do,”.
“ I mean it’s thanks to you all for helping me and reassuring me I’ll be fine, so thank you for that,” Spirit said.
“Hey anything to help you out, Spirit,” Afkarr said.
“Can you move, you’re holding up the line,” said the guy behind them.
“Oh sorry Felix, come on let's go on,” Baror said.
They then all stood in line for 20 more minutes. Eventually, they got their food and sat down to eat, they had cod with mushroom sauce, roasted beets, and half of a boiled potato. When they sat down only the people from cabins 4, 3, 2, and 1 were still in the mess haul and the General was sticking around as well. General Biarte was a tall and fit man, he had many battle scars on him and wore an eyepatch to conceal an eye he lost in battle with a dragon. He had long greyish-black hair and a long black beard that had some tiny braids and beads in them. His remaining eye was black and he wore a heavy shell of armor on him. But before Spirit could take a bit out of his food a man came barging into the mess haul. He looked very worn out and tired like he was running from something.
“What is wrong good sir?” said Afkarr.
“It’s back,” he said
“What’s back?” said Spirit
“Hallbjorn is-” the strange man said as he collapsed out of exhaustion. Soon after some lights came to carry the stranger to a hay bed.
“Hallbjorn, who and what is that man talking about?”
“Hallbjorn was a fierce ice dragon that terrorized the fjords long ago giving the places he visited an eternal winter and he freezes people and animals to use as decorations in his cave,” said Afkarr as he recalled the story of Hallbjorn from memory, “King Aki placed him into an eternal slumber in Jostedalsbreen, but somehow it has managed to wake up,”.
“What are we going to do?” Baror said.
“I will have the knights of rooms seven, eight, and nine of the cabin one face Hallbjorn,” said General Biarte, “Everyone else will be on standby,”
“Glory be brother this will be your first journey ever, I am so excited to travel to Hallbjorn’s layer and fight him alongside you!” said Baror.
“Å nei, my first journey is on my second day, I have barely even trained to fight monsters let alone start training in general, this is going to go horribly,” Spirit thought and his face went a little paler with panic.
“Don’t worry brother, we’ll be fine, chances are he is still asleep and this old geezer is just delusional,” Baror said.
“I would not count on that being the case, eternal sleep can be broken by some powerful magic, I’ve read about it in my studies,” Afkarr said, “ But only the strongest of wizards can make these spells, there is only one I know exists and the others are the gods of the olden times, who I don't believe ever existed, also the poor guy looks frightened, I think what he is saying is true,".
