Nathan quickly got out from under the desk and stood up. Dawn rose from the ground immediately after him, while her father looked at her bitterly. «I didn't give you the keys to do whatever you want behind my back.» he told her and she looked down. «There are rules and you, of all people, should set an example.»
«I am sorry.» Dawn whispered, still looking down.
«No one should touch my desk without permission.» Allen insisted.
Nathan decided to expose himself and keep his promise to take on all responsibility. «It was my fault, Mr. Evans, I insisted. Dawn tried to stop me.»
The principal motioned for him to be quiet. «You are not here to lead her, or anyone else, astray. It should be the other way around.»
«I just wanted to get my cell phone, we weren't stealing anything.» Nathan insisted. «I really need it, please. It will never happen again.»
«You'll get it back tomorrow.»
«But– »
«No buts.» Allen didn't let Nathan speak. «And don't expect it to end here, for your foolish stunt.»
«We will accept any punishment you want.» Dawn said, this time looking her father straight in the eyes. «But give him back his cell phone. There are some... precious memories.», her voice trembled and Allen understood why she had decided to help that boy.
«Fine.» said the principal. He opened the drawer and rummaged inside. He took out an old cell phone, rather worn and with a broken glass. «I guess this is it.»
Nathan grabbed it quickly. He examined it to make sure it was okay. He felt so relieved that it still worked and that no one had harmed it. «Thank you!» he said, bowing his head.
«Now, go away.» Allen told them. «Leave the key here.»
Dawn placed the key, she had in her pocket, on the desk and then grabbed Nathan's arm to drag him towards the door, before her father changed his mind.
When they were in the corridor, Nathan handed back her cell phone, which they had used as a flashlight. «I'm sorry.»
«It doesn't matter. It was my fault.» she said walking towards their dormitory. «I was too nervous from the beginning and my father's voice was the straw that broke the camel's back.»
Nathan couldn't help but wonder if it was his proximity that had triggered Dawn's powers. After all, she was used to situations like that one, and he was pretty sure he saw her blush. In the end, he decided to believe her words and they continued in silence to their rooms.
The next morning, when he saw her at breakfast, in the kitchen, everything was calm, as usual. Relatively calm, when they were all together at the table there was not a moment of quiet. They all tended to speak at the same time and their voices drowned out.
«Silence!» Jeyson shouted suddenly and everyone froze.
«We have to go?» asked Ellen, sitting next to him.
Jeyson nodded. «A descendant of Hallam, like Rick and Chelsea. He is fighting with the Hunters, but he can't do it alone. They are armed.»
The Nerys' eyes widened. The liquid that leaked from their weapons was dangerous. If they were hit, even slightly, they were unable to use their abilities for a few minutes.
«Let's get a move on.» Megan said.
«Dawn, are you and Nathan coming with us?» Sam asked. She had involuntarily intercepted the message that Allen had just sent to his daughter.
Dawn sighed, then shook her head. «You'll manage without the two of us. Hurry now.»
The Council members looked at each other confused for a few moments but then, without leaving the table, they joined hands and let Jeb teleport them away from there.
«Why did you let them go? If it's dangerous, they're going to need all the help they can get.», Nathan remained seated.
«With Sam's barrier and Ellen's abilities, we can rest assured.» she replied, starting to clear the table. «My father has other plans for the two of us.» she said as she tossed the leftovers into the trash can and put the dishes back in the sink. «What are you waiting for? Give me a hand. So we can hurry up and go to the gym.»
«What does he want us to do?»
«Clean all equipment from top to bottom.», Dawn sighed.
«Can't you use your powers? Do some magic with water to clean them?»
Dawn shook her head. «No way to even try.» she replied. «There are security cameras there too, he will keep an eye on us. So let's not make our situation worse.»
Nathan stood up and walked to the sink. «Alright. At least you can do it with the dishes?»
«I could… but I'm not going to be the only one cleaning up and you owe me, after yesterday.»
For a moment Nathan thought about the two of them hiding under the desk and their faces almost touching. If he had Dawn's abilities, the lights would probably go off and on intermittently. «Sorry.» he simply told her so as not to leave the conversation hanging.
«It doesn't matter, just be careful not to lose it again. It's important to you, you should look after it.»
Nathan began scrubbing one of the cups in the sink. «Yeah. I thought I had put it in my pocket before joining you in the relax room, but I was wrong. I remembered it when Sam told us about the voicemail, but you made me follow you to pick up that guy.»
Thinking of Alyah's young descendant, who hid his true hair color, Dawn looked at Nathan. She examined his wavy blue-black hair. She believed he might be a descendant of Caleigh, but ever since they found Oswald, she had dismissed that idea. Now that only one was missing – and it was highly unlikely Nathan himself could be descended from Hyram – she began to make other assumptions. Judging by the color of his eyes, he might have been like Sam, or maybe like Jeyson, but he must have dyed his hair. Many other Nerys did it, it wasn't forbidden to change their look and try to stand out.
Nathan felt Dawn's gaze. «What's wrong with you?» he asked her, rinsing some cutlery.
«Is this really your hair color?», she answered him with another question.
He turned to her in surprise. «Huh?»
«You have noticed that Nerys who have the same ancestor look alike, right? Only Alyx's descendants have such dark hair, but their eyes are blue. So either you're the last descendant we're looking for or your hair isn't that color.»
Nathan turned off the tap. He looked annoyed, as if Dawn had touched a nerve. She stared at him confused, maybe she had said something wrong.
«Dawn!» Jeb appeared out of nowhere shouting the girl's name. He looked over the moon.
«The mission must have gone well, I take it from your smile.» Dawn said.
Jeb nodded. «We found it, the last descendant. While we were helping that boy, suddenly the Hunters started to fall asleep and stopped attacking us. It was crazy.»
Dawn smiled in disbelief. «It's great.» she said. «They already know how to master their powers perfectly.»
Nathan felt the world collapse around him. He couldn't rejoice like his two friends. Until then, he had held out hope that he was the missing piece of the puzzle. Unfortunately this was not the case. The group was complete and his presence on the Council would have been useless. They didn't need him anymore. Dawn would no longer have any reason to insist on him, she would no longer have to help him discover his abilities at all costs, since none of them were missing anymore. And he would be alone again, as he always had been.
«Come, I'll take you to her.» Jeb said.
Dawn took a step towards Jeb but Nathan grabbed her arm instinctively, not wanting to let go. «Weren't we supposed to go to the gym?», he reminded her in hopes that would be enough to hold her back.
«We'll go there later.» Dawn told him, freeing herself from his hand. «I'm sure my father will understand. Let's go and introduce ourselves.»
Nathan hesitated to join her and Jeb. It was Dawn who grabbed onto him so Jeb could teleport them both.
