Savannah had just returned from the office where she worked when there was a knock on the door. Nathan showed up there with Dawn, Chelsea and Jeb. His cousin looked at him pretty surprised. She couldn't believe he was in the company of other people, he had always been a loner and had never listened to her when she told him to move on. «What are you doing here?» she asked him, standing in the doorway, without even inviting them to enter. «I haven't heard from you in weeks. What are you doing? Who are they?»
«We need to talk to you, but not out here.» he told her.
«You didn't join some sect, did you?»
Nathan rolled his eyes. «No. Please let us in.»
Savannah cleared the way for him and the four crossed the threshold.
Nathan's cousin lived alone in an apartment in town, not far from her office. A few meters away there was also the old house where her mother, Nathan's aunt, lived.
When Savannah closed the door Dawn spoke. «Without beating around the bush, we know what you can do.»
Savannah glared at Nathan. «Did you tell him our family secret? How could you use your gift in front of other people?! No one must know, they will come for us if they find us.»
Nathan was surprised and confused at the same time. From his cousin's words, it almost seemed like he had already used his powers before. Since he didn't reply, Dawn decided to intervene again. «We too have a... gift, extraordinary abilities. They're not the same ones you have, but we're still like you, and Nathan.»
«We're rounding up everyone like us, taking them to a safe place.» Chelsea explained to her. «Waiting to return to our planet.»
«Planet?» Savannah echoed confusedly. «I thought we just had more developed minds, not that we were aliens.»
«Nerys, this is who we are.» Jeb corrected her. «Aliens is not the right term. Earthlings would be too, on our planet, after all.»
«This is not important, what is important to know is that when the time comes, our planet will call us back.» Dawn continued with the explanation.
Savannah's eyes widened. «So, does that mean we have to leave Earth?»
Dawn nodded. «We have no choice, unfortunately it's not up to us.»
«And our families? What will become of them?» Savannah asked, thinking about her mother, who wasn't like her and Nathan. She was all that was left to her mother.
«If they're not like us, they won't be able to follow us, unfortunately.» Chelsea said.
For the Nerys left orphaned and without a family, it would have been easy, but those who still had relatives and friends among the Earthlings would inevitably have had to let them go.
Nathan felt immense sadness when he saw his cousin's gloomy face. What he had felt, when he was left without both parents, he wouldn't wish on anyone. He wanted to comfort her but he didn't know how to.
«I understand how you feel.» Dawn told her. She would have to say goodbye to the man who raised her once the convergence of the planets arrived. «I will have to abandon someone too and, no matter how much I try to prepare for that moment, it still hurts. But at least now you know what will happen and you have a chance to say goodbye, to make more memories.»
«Dawn… we have to go now. Others may need us.» Jeb pointed out.
Dawn nodded. «Let's give them a moment.», she, Chelsea and Jeb took a few steps back to give the two cousins some privacy.
«I came to take you with us, I forgot you still have a family, unlike me.» Nathan told her.
Savannah tried not to think about the fact she wouldn't have it much longer. She had to look strong, especially in the eyes of Nathan who seemed to have come back to life, at least a little. «Don't worry about me, Nate. I'll be fine. You go and make sure what happened to my father never happens again.», then Savannah turned to the other three. «Be careful of those people, they are really dangerous.»
Nathan's eyes widened. «Did they take your father too?»
«You can't remember him, you were just a child, but if it wasn't for him the two of us wouldn't be here.» Savannah said. «He fought them to allow us to escape and when we went back to look for him… », she paused, thinking back to that terrible moment. «Only his clothes remained of him. You were so afraid it would happen again that from that day on you completely stopped using our gift.»
«Do you mean that as a child I was already able to use them?» he asked, also attracting the attention of the other three Nerys.
Savannah nodded. «Yes, that was how you communicated with your mother. You never cried, because aunt always knew what you needed, even when you were just a baby.»
«I told you the problem is only in your head.» Dawn interjected.
Savannah looked at her cousin. «Can't you use them?»
«I didn't even remember having them... » Nathan confessed aloud.
Savannah put a hand on his shoulder. «You have to relax, you don't have to make any effort. The more you think about it, the less successful you will be. What we do is mainly linked to our mind, it's true, but it also depends on our feelings. If you let yourself go, it will happen when you least expect it.», she tried to reassure him. «My father, your parents… it's normal for you to be in this state, you just need some time.»
«And we will help you.» Chelsea stated.
Savannah hugged Nathan before letting him leave with his new friends. «Be careful, please.» she recommended.
Nathan nodded and then reached Jeb who teleported them away from there in front of Savannah's surprised eyes.
When they were in the Council room, the others asked where Nathan's cousin was. Noticing the sad expression on his face, they thought something might have happened to her.
«She is not with us. She want to stay with her mother.» Dawn explained. «But she will be careful not to use her powers.»
«Too bad, she could have helped Nate.» Ellen said, sitting on the floor next to Jeyson, who was playing video games as usual.
«I need some air.», Nathan quickly left.
«What's wrong with him?» Sam asked putting aside the comic she was reading. «Did something happen?»
«He just found out some things about his past.» Chelsea replied. «He needs time to process them.»
While Chelsea and Jeb talked about how it happened and what they learned about Nathan, Dawn was just staring at the door the entire time. She was undecided whether or not she should follow Nathan. Maybe he wanted to be alone, or maybe he needed someone to talk to.
«He's going to the pool.» Jeyson said without distracting himself from the game he was playing. «In case anyone was wondering.»
Ellen motioned for Dawn to go, fully understanding what was going through her friend's mind. And, finally, Dawn left the room to head towards the pool, which was located on the lower level. She quickened her pace, worried about Nathan, but when she got there, she saw him quite calm. He had taken off his shoes and put his feet in the water. He sat on the edge of the pool, while some younger Nerys enjoyed throwing a ball at each other, or having silly races to see who was faster.
Dawn sat down next to him, but Nathan didn't get too upset. He was used to it by now. «Do you think it was just an accident?», it came naturally to him to ask out loud. «My parents' one I mean… »
Dawn sighed. «Does it really matter now, torturing yourself with this thought? What difference does it make if it was an accident, or if it was those guys in suits? You couldn't get them back anyway. Why do you want to hurt yourself?», she put her hand on his shoulder for a moment. «Don't think about the past, okay? You're gonna be stuck forever.»
Nathan nodded. «You're right.», he cleared his throat. «What do you think they really want from us?»
Dawn shrugged. «I told you, we don't have an answer.» she stated. «Jeb escaped before they took him to their base. When we found him, immediately afterwards, he couldn't tell us anything.»
Not far from them, some children started having a diving competition. Obviously the water also ended up in their direction. Before they touched her, Dawn blocked the splashes, while Nathan was hit full on. She put a hand over her mouth to hold back a laugh.
«Why don't you help me instead of laughing at my misfortunes?» Nathan said as drops of water slid down his face.
Dawn apologized. «Let me help you.», she used the sleeve of her shirt to gently dab his face and wipe away the water.
Nathan stared at her for a few seconds, before remembering what she could do. «I thought you could control the elements.» he told her.
Dawn instinctively pulled her hand back. «You're right… how stupid of me.», then she smiled nervously, in a few seconds, the water began to leak from the fibers of Nathan's clothes and head back into the pool. They looked at each other in silence for a few seconds then Dawn quickly got back to her feet. «Now that you're dry, let's go back to the others. They are all worried about you.», she started walking without waiting for his response.
Nathan got up and hurried after her.
