Oh My Gangster
Part Thirteen
Mile's
Standing on Luca's front porch, looking at the empty space where his car should be. I shivered, a sense of fear caught me. This is the fifth time I've come out here and stood watching that empty spot then down the drive and back to the empty spot again hoping his car would miraculously appear and he'd step out holding that smile I love, but no car appears, no Luca smiling and no phone calls either, not even a message, absolutely nothing. What do I do? Nothing, I'm a sitting fucking duck and the sun is starting to set.
"Found you," I heard quickly, then struggled when a hand came over to cover my mouth and a large body pressed into my back. "It's all good." I sigh, realizing it's Kyle and turn around when he lets go. "Be quiet." He whispers, then pulls me back into the house.
"What's going on?" His eyebrows shot up then his eyes slid away from mine. "Kyle?"
"Look, I didn't like the idea of you and Luca, but I get it. It's what you both need to get away from the filth and grime of life..."
"Kyle, please." I said, cutting in. Then as quick as his eyes were ablazed, they softened and he took my hand and held it tight.
"I left that life behind a long time ago Mile's, but you're a son to me and no father wants his son to cry, so I will help you," he paused for a few seconds but those few seconds felt like an eternity. "Josh, has Luca. It's not good Mile's and I don't know what he's done to him, but I do know he's alive. So we need to go and get him back, right?"
"Right?" I was clenching my jaw. I felt frozen and stiff. Anger burns a hole in my chest. "Eddie has got wind of this too, because let's face it, Josh is good for inflicting pain, but his mouth gets the better of him, so we know it won't be long until he's thrown into the river missing his top teeth, but it doesn't stop him from accomplishing what he set out to do and that's kill Luca, so we need to go now while he's busy with other arrangements. Ed is waiting."
"Ed? Where."
"Parked up down the road in a black spot, so get your jacket." I nodded and ran upstairs real quick and grabbed my black hoodie and gloves. I chucked them on and ran back down to Kyle and slipped on my boots.
"Let's go." We rushed out the back of the house and around towards the front but we didn't go down the drive. Kyle pulled me through some bushes and between trees, we kept a steady pace as it got darker and thicker. My chest started to hurt from rushing, but it wasn't just that, it hurt for different reasons. I felt the warm tears spill from my eyes and turn cold as they slipped over my cheeks.
"Here." He said, pointing to a car and I saw Eddie. I don't really know the guy, I've seen him a lot, but I'd never really got this close to him, ever.
"Hey, Mile's," I looked at him for a second and my emotions overwhelmed me and rushed into his arms like a kid who had been scorned. "Whoa…" He said, but then relaxed a hand on my back. I looked up at him, I felt weak and pathetic, but my love for Luca made me like that and I just didn't care anymore, because without him, I'm only half of me.
"Please," I choked on my sobs. "Please let's get him back."
He smiled down at me. "I get why he's so in love with you. Don't worry kid, we will get him." His words held no lie, his voice full of so much confidence I felt relieved and moved away. Kyle held the door open for me and I jumped in and he did the same. Eddie lit up another cigarette and pulled away and headed towards the city.
It grows dark around here when the sun disappears, no street lights. That's why Luca liked it, it made his home more private. "I got some guys watching the place Josh is at."
"Where is he, at the den?" Kyle didn't say anything, he was thinking, but Eddie sighed and lit yet another cigarette. "Can I have one?" He nodded and chucked the packet over his shoulder at me.
"He's not at that den. He's at the harbor. Seems like that little shit had been planning this for a while now."
"I...I didn't know…"
"I know." Eddie said with an exasperated breath. "You were in the plan too. He was going to get rid of you as well." What the fuck. Josh was gonna do me in? I know he hated that I headed our pathetic excuse for a gang, but I didn't know he'd go that far, or was I really that naive. "All I know so far is that Luca, stupidly, tried to settle this alone. He's hurt, but not dead." I curled up and hid my face in my hands as the tears fell effortlessly, again. "Don't Worry kid, you got me…" I cut in.
"Worry! How can I not worry!" Kyle held a hand to my knee, I calmed.
"I'm the best kid," said Eddie. I could see his grin in the rear view mirror. "So don't worry." He said in a more stern tone.
"Josh will suspect something is coming." I said.
"Of course he will, but he doesn't fully understand what he's actually up against. He thinks he knows it all, but he hasn't a damn clue. Me and Luca go back, way back. That brat doesn't realize the devil is coming for him." I gasped a little and searched my mind. I heard that, once, from Kyle, when I was a kid. The devil leads an army with no sound, the devil is the wind and his companion the sword. I remembered, it's about Luca and Eddie. That's when I first wanted to become a gang leader, I wanted to be a devil too and Josh was going to my sword. Never worked out that way.
"Kill him Eddie." He laughed a little.
"No, kid. That's your choice. So make the right one. In life you have choices and only the right one will make you a man."
"I don't get what you mean." He laughed again. My nerves got the better of me and I picked up the cigarettes and pulled one from the box and lit up.
"Killing a guy or two doesn't make you a man," he held back his hand for his cigarettes. "Sometimes walking away, with your head held high, makes you a man." "But won't that make you look weak?" I asked after taking a drag from my cigarette.
"No, it means your strong, it says fuck with me again, there won't be a next time. You'd be surprised how many go running just from that kid."
"Sounds stupid to me." Kyle huffed, I shot him a look and Eddie chuckled.
"Soon, you will fully realize." It went silent after that. I watched as the city came into view. It looked like a sea of lights, waiting to swallow me whole. I felt so heavy, in my bones. Then I thought and thought about all the different ways I could kill Josh, yet none satisfied me. I thought again about what Eddie said, about walking away. If I could see the fear in Josh's eyes, see him pale at words alone, to be so afraid to cross my path again, then I'd be happy. I pictured it, I let my mind's eyes materialize it...and, you know what, I felt satisfied. Is that being a man? Because seeing it, I felt strong, brave. Yeah, I'm going to get my man and I'm going to make Josh wish he never crossed my path, wish he never laid a hand on my guy. That's being a man and I'm going to become that man, for Luca.
