The last opportunity

Episode 2

Episode 2

Feb 22, 2024

Pov Felix

Felix was locked in a room, not knowing what was going to happen to him. He had failed in his mission to steal the sample of the cure, and had been neutralized by the guards. They had taken him to that isolated room, to see what punishment they would give him. But all that changed when the zombies entered the laboratory.

Felix knew what zombies were. Everybody knew. They were the result of a mutation or that's what they said they were told when it started, caused people to transform into bloodthirsty monsters. Felix had watched the virus spread across the world, and civilization crumble. Felix had survived as best he could, until a secret organization offered him a job. They asked him to steal the sample of the cure, which scientists had developed in a secret base. Lucas accepted, thinking it would be easy and lucrative. But he was wrong.

Felix and four other mercenaries had entered the laboratory after an explosion, and had reached the refrigerator where the sample was. Felix had been the first to grab it, but he hadn't been able to get out. The laboratory guards had captured him, and had taken the sample from him. Lucas had been beaten and locked up, and he didn't know what was going to happen to him.

But then, the alarms rang again. This time, they were louder and more urgent, and Felix wondered what was happening. He looked out the small window in the room, and saw how all the guards in the place were running in one direction, leaving the laboratory unprotected. Felix was surprised, and thought that perhaps it was the opportunity to escape from him.

But then, he heard screams and shots coming from outside. Felix looked out the window further, and what he saw chilled him. A horde of zombies had found the base, and had begun to enter through the main gate. There were hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people infected by the virus, who had lost all humanity and were only looking for fresh meat. The guards tried to stop them, but there were too many of them, and the zombies outnumbered and outnumbered them.

Felix felt a chill, and realized that he was in grave danger. If the zombies entered the laboratory, they would find him and devour him. He had to get out of there, and quickly. But he had no where to go. The window was closed, and the door was locked. Felix was trapped, and he knew it was the end. No one would help him, not the scientists, not the guards, not the zombies. Only him, who had gotten into that mess.

pov henry

Henry was running through the corridors of the laboratory, with two guards escorting him. He carried in his hand a briefcase containing the sample of the cure, the only one left after the attack they had just a few hours ago. Henry knew that he had to get out of there, and take the sample to a safe place. It was his responsibility to humanity, and he could not fail.

But it wasn't going to be easy. The laboratory was invaded by zombies, who had entered through the main door. There were hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people infected by the virus, who had lost all humanity and were only looking for fresh meat. The guards tried to stop them, but there were too many of them, and the zombies outnumbered and outnumbered them.

Henry and the guards were shooting their way, looking for the nearest exit. Henry hoped there was a vehicle waiting for them, or a helicopter to rescue them. But he wasn't sure that anyone knew what was happening, or that anyone could help them.

Suddenly, Henry heard screams coming from one of the rooms. He recognized the voice of Lucas, the criminal who had originally tried to steal the cure sample. Felix was trapped inside and crying for help.

-I need help here! -Felix shouted-. Please get me out of this place! Zombies are lurking!

Henry stopped, exchanging glances with the guards. Uncertainty weighed in the air. Should they leave Lucas inside or release him?

Reflecting on what Felix had done and the current situation, Henry realized that although Felix had been a thief, survival was now the priority. Perhaps, in this critical situation, even someone like Felix could be of help in escaping.

Making a decision, Henry approached the door and unlocked it with a key he had. He entered the room where Felix saw him and expressed his relief.

- Thanks thanks! -exclaimed Felix-. You can not imagine how much I thank you!

"Don't thank me yet," Henry warned. We are not safe. We need to get out of here as soon as possible.

- As? -Felix asked-. Haven't the zombies wiped out the whole place yet?

- Yes, but if we're lucky we can get out through one of the exits used by the supply trucks - Henry responded -. We need your help.

- My help? -Felix inquired-. So that?

"To carry the sample," Henry explained, showing him the briefcase. It is the cure for the virus, the last hope. You put it at risk, now you must help us preserve it.

- That? -Lucas was puzzled-. Is this what he was trying to steal?

"There's no time for explanations," Henry said. Just trust me and follow my orders. Are you with us or against us?

Felix hesitated, but finally nodded. He had no choice if he wanted to survive.

"I'm with you," Felix stated. What should I do?

"Take the briefcase and follow us," Henry ordered, handing him the briefcase. Let's go out the back door. I hope there is a vehicle available.

"Understood," Felix replied, taking the briefcase. Come on.

Henry, Felix, and the guards left the room, running through the hallways, dodging the zombies. They reached the back door, followed by the guards escorting them. It was an SUV, with the government logo. Henry was glad, and thought that perhaps someone had sent them.

- Quick, get to the car! -Henry shouted-. Let's escape!

Henry and Felix headed to the car, but the guards stopped them. They looked back, and saw the zombies approaching. There were hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people infected by the virus, who had lost all humanity and were only looking for fresh meat. The guards knew they couldn't let the zombies get to the car. They had to do something.

- Wait! -one of the guards shouted-. We stay!

- That? -Henry asked, surprised. What are they saying?

"We stay, and you go," said the other guard. It's the only way they can escape.

"No, we can't leave them," Henry said. You have to get out of here too.

"There's no time, Henry," said the first guard. The zombies are about to reach us. You have to leave, and take the sample to a safe place. It's our only hope.

-But... -Henry tried to say.

"No buts, Henry," said the second guard. It is our decision, and our mission. You are the scientist, we are the soldiers. You have to save the world, we have to protect them. Is that how it works.

"Thank you, friends," said Henry, with tears in his eyes. Thanks for everything.

"You're welcome, Henry," the guards said, smiling. Now, go. And don't look back.

Henry and Felix nodded, and got into the car. They started up and left the laboratory. They left the guards behind, who pulled out their weapons and faced the zombies. They shot, and killed some, but not all. The zombies surrounded them, and attacked them. The guards fought to the end, but could not resist. The zombies devoured them, and they continued advancing.

Henry and Felix escaped down the road, and breathed a sigh of relief. They had managed to escape, and had saved the sample. But they could not forget the guards, who had given their lives for them. Henry and Felix owed them a lot, and they were grateful. They were heroes, and they would never be forgotten.
