The Soaring Wing

Dinnertime!

Dinnertime!

Feb 26, 2024

Skye walked into the Dining Room, only to be met with an aura of friendliness, as she watched everyone enjoy their food and banter with each other, smiling and joking around and being all comfortable with each other. She felt the vivid air of friendship and positivity for sure. As Carter spotted her from across the table, he decided to get up and make sure her presence was known.

“Everyone, I just want to make a quick announcement. As some of you know, we have a new member joining our wonderful crew today.”
Carter would say as he glanced over at Skye with a soft smile. He could tell she was a little panicked as everyone in the room turned their heads at her and paid attention to her.

“I want you all to welcome her with open arms, and to treat her like one of us..as that is what she’ll become. So, everyone, please welcome Skye aboard!”

Skye took a deep breath as she heard everyone’s reassuring voices as they all welcomed her with open arms, and she shyly waved.
“Oh..well,um..hi. I’m Skye, I’m an angel dragon too, like a couple of you here..I uh..h-hope I don’t become too much of a problem.”

Everyone around the table applauses and compliments her, clearly happy to welcome her aboard. Carter then turns to speak to her.
“You’re not ever gonna be a problem for us. You’re family now and will be treated as such. There’s one thing I gotta ask you though, and I want you to answer truthfully, okay?”

Skye nodded her head before Carter spoke.
“Are you feeling alright? I got the word that your previous environment was…unpleasant, in a very heavy way. Are you doing better now? Does your old life still haunt you in some way?”

Skye took a deep breath.
“Well..I’m..better. It’s been a little bit comforting knowing I won’t ever have to go back but..might take a while before it eventually stops haunting me though. I don’t regret running away.”
“You can take as much time as you need to become comfortable here and be away from that environment. It’s gonna be okay, I promise you; you’re here with people who’ll care for you now, and we’re gonna make sure your previous life is nothing more than a distant memory.”
Carter replied, speaking with a gentle but comforting tone as he smiled at her.

“T-Thanks, Captain.”
“No problem, Skye. It’ll take a while to adjust but I’m sure you will get to us in no time. But, enough of the sappy talk! Let's be honest, dinner time is the best time!”
Carter says as everyone around him chuckles. Skye got to converse with the others in a rather positive and light-hearted manner; some asked her general questions about her background and others shared their own experiences to help her feel at ease and let her know she wasn’t alone.

“Hey um, Skye. I actually didn’t get to ask you this beforehand, but I was curious…A lot of angel dragons tend to have some sort of magical ability, right? What’s yours?”
Tommy would ask.

"It's..a very unconventional one."

Carter smiled at her, nodding with a very curious gaze.
“Oh? What would that be? There’s no such thing as unconventional powers, especially when it comes to our crew. We’ve all got powers that are unique to each of us.”

Skye took a deep breath.
“Well..I..basically give anyone a strength boost of their powers if I’m touching them, and even more so if they’re wearing one of the matching bracelets I sew..Like, the power of friendship, if you will. It lets me copy your ability and use it myself for a short time..”

Everyone’s eyes widened in amazement as Skye talked about her ability. One of the other members, Lilly, quickly stood up at the mention of her bracelets.
“Wait..so you can sew magical bracelets and it lets you copy and use other people’s abilities? That’s so friggin cool!”

Skye would smile shyly at her in response.
"Ah..t-thank you...and um..I-I could help you with sewing, if you ever need an assistant.."

She glanced over to Carter, who’d then speak up and say,
“See? Told you there was no such thing as unconventional powers. Besides, I'm sure Lilly could use all the help, she had to make all the gear on the ship on a fairly short notice.”

Lilly laughed and nodded her head.
“Yep, that’s true! It’s..a lot, but it’s fun. I sure wouldn't mind the extra help though! As a matter of fact, Skye, I’d love to see your power in action, if you’d like to show us.”

Skye nodded her head back.
“Oh uh..Yeah, sure.”

She looked over at Tommy.
“Would you mind holding your hand out?”

“Sure thing, Skye.”
He replies, as he let her put the bracelet on and forms a ball of water in the palm of his hand. It was very easy for her to tell that he had very good control over it, as the liquid flowed around his finger smoothly and effortlessly. As Skye grabbed a hold of his other hand, the water ball in his palm would soon turn to ice and reshape itself freely.

Everyone was amazed to see this, with Carter expressing his surprise in particular.
“W-Wow, that's...amazing! You have such a unique power!”

"Ah..haha..t-thank you."
Skye would respond, with a sheepish laugh, as her free hand starts to glow the same blue as Tommy's ice aura, and formed that same snowy ball in her hand, shaping it around into a snowflake, much to everyone’s amazement.

Carter would go up to her and place his hand on her shoulder, and gave a warm smile.
“You’re such a talented individual, Skye.”

She’d nervously laugh and look away, rubbing behind her head shyly.
“M-Me? I’m..not that talented..”

Carter chuckled.
“You literally have the ability to boost and copy people’s abilities. Do you know how useful a power like that actually is?? Especially with this crew! It’s amazing.”

He’d smile at her again, warmly and reassuringly.
“You might not think it's much, and you’re probably thinking it’s average, but no, I say that’s a very unique ability to have, especially for someone like you. It’s actually kind of fitting for you.”

Skye blushed.
“T-Thanks..Carter. I appreciate it.”

As a means to escape from her past, a young dragon named Skye stows away on the only place she knows people won't find her: An airship called The Pelican, owned by a famous team of adventurers called the Horizon Flyers. Fortunately, Tommy, the steward of the airship, ends up finding her hiding away in the the storage compartment of the airship. She braces for the worst, only to be caught off by his kind attitude, and provides her a place to stay instead of hiding away from everyone.

Over time, Skye befriends the rest of the crew, eventually allowing herself to bond with them over their mutual love for adventure, exploration, and each other's company. She now seeks a better and brighter future for herself, far away from the place she once used to call home.

Short story I wanted to write. Will only be 10 chapters long.
