The Soaring Wing

Lilly

Lilly

Feb 27, 2024

“Heck…why am I being so nervous about this?”

Skye would ask herself as she nervously stood in front of Lilly’s cabin door. After showing her abilities to the entire crew at Dinner, Lilly had asked her to come by because she loved to sew and was curious to know about her. As she went to place her hand on the door to knock, it would immediately swing open.

“Ah! Skye! I was expecting you. Come on in!”

"O-Oh! Uh, okay! Sure thing."
She'd say as the snow leopard guided her inside to sit. Lilly's room was essentially designed to look very colorful, but also warm and cozy, as she had ambient lights hanging from the ceiling, as well as different paintings hung up on the walls; some of which were done by the other members of the crew. However, she also had shelves full of fabric that sat underneath her bed, neatly sorted by color swatch.

"Your room is so pretty, I love it."
Skye says as she looks around upon entering.

"Thank you, I appreciate that! I wanted my room to be all cozy and stuff, since, well, this is also my work space. How am I going to work if I can't be comfy while doing so?"
Lilly replied with a laugh, being glad to have her around.

"So..I remember hearing you at Dinner, saying that you loved to sew?"

Skye nodded her head.
"Uh, yeah. That's correct."

Lilly scratched her chin.
"Interesting! But let me ask this first. Do you know to use a sewing machine, or do you hand sew?"

"..Little bit of both, actually...Hand sewing is mostly my thing, though..since I know blanket and ladder stitching."

Lilly smiled at her softly and nods as she hears her explain.
"Well, that's good. I bet those skills can be really helpful in many scenarios. Do you know how to thread and wind the bobbin? If not, I can show you, it's rather easy."

Skye pondered the question for a minute.
"I..kinda don't..I've always just used the sewing machine when my parents had it set up, I never really figured out how to set it up on my own."

"I see. I guess you're learning today, eh?"
Lilly says as she takes out the various materials along with the bobbin, demonstrating every step to Skye at a pace she's able to understand and have time to follow along on her own. She'd take notice of how Skye was writing everything down in a journal while she was learning the steps.

"I see you've got a rather colorful journal; perfect to write stuff down in."

"O-Oh? This? Yeah, I bought it from a shop a couple years back and I've mostly been documenting all the neat things I've come across on my adventures, before I ended up here."
Skye would reply as she saw Lilly take interest in the journal's cover, shortly handing it over to her to glance at.

"That's so fascinating! It must be so rad to just have everything documented in one spot. Plus, your journal is so pretty looking too, and so is your handwriting! I love how organized everything is."

Skye sheepishly laughed, appreciating her compliment, as she'd watch Lilly glance through each page carefully.
"Aw..t-thank you, haha.."

Lilly’s face would soften to a smile, which widened as she placed her hand on Skye’s shoulder.
“No prob! I know you’ve been documenting a lot, but were you planning on adding in how your journey with us from here will go? Just curious, is all.”

Skye nodded her head.
“That was the plan.”

Lilly leaned back in her seat.
“Heh, guess I shouldn’t be too surprised about your answer, given how you’ve kept track of everything so effectively. I’m glad to hear it nonetheless though! Perhaps you’ll be more inspired when it comes to your cute little doodles in here too. Which leads to my next question…”

Skye would sheepishly laugh again.
“G-Gosh, you ask a lot of questions..”

The snow leopard let out a soft laugh at her response, finding it a bit humorous herself.
“I’m just a curious cat! I can’t help it! I saw you have pages for nearly everyone, but mostly Tommy and Carter’s have been filled out so far. I wanted to ask, may I help you fill out my page?”

“Oh, uh. Sure! It’d be helpful, for sure.”
Skye replies, softly rubbing her arm and looking down shyly, but she feels Lilly’s long snow leopard tail place itself on her lap; she looks up at Lilly.

“This is my last question though, I promise. I know you weren’t treated well at home..and you definitely deserve so much better…but..how do you feel? I hope we don’t scare you too much.”

“Huh? N-Nono, you guys are fine! Honestly, after getting to know some of the other members at dinnertime, I’ve..felt safe..Like I can be myself without fear of judgment, y’know?”
“Haha, I get what you’re trying to say. This group is definitely a strange mixture and mash of personalities, but it’s the kind where we all still care about each other, even you, at the end of the day. That kind of bond is special and defines our family of a crew. So, I’m really glad to hear you feel so safe around us, and I hope this ship ends up becoming a home for you. You deserve to feel loved and cared for, y’know?”

“I-I’m sure, in time, it will. Honestly..I don’t really have much of a reason to still be afraid anymore.”

Lilly chuckles softly as she leaned back in her seat.
“Well, I’d be a little concerned if you still felt a bit wary. Which..is understandable considering you just got here a mere few hours ago. But! You’re part of this crew now, and hopefully our little dinner together left a good impression on you. We’re pretty much a small family, and we take care of our own.”

Skye simply nodded her head at her, understandingly.

Lilly warmly smiles at her as she nodded her head, but glances over to her sewing machine, remembering the initial reason she invited Skye here.
“Oh! Did you want to keep going with our sewing lesson, or would you rather move onto something else?”

“Oh, heck! I came here to help you sew. I completely got side-tracked…”

“Don’t worry, it was my fault for asking too many questions! I can’t help myself. We can totally go back to it now though! And y’know…”
Lilly states, as she eyes all her spare fabric.

“I might have an idea as to how I can effectively teach you a few techniques…I can do all that while sewing a one-of-a-kind outfit just for you!”
“A..one-of-a-kind outfit? W-Wait, why?”

“I figure it’d be a nice way to welcome you to the crew, don’t cha think? You're part of it now, so it seems fitting to give you something unique to your own person. Plus, this gives you a cool outfit to wear to all of the adventures you'll be going on with us, too!”

“I guess that’s fair.”

Lilly's face brightens up at that as she nods.
“All right then! I'm glad you think that way. So, let's get started!”

As a means to escape from her past, a young dragon named Skye stows away on the only place she knows people won't find her: An airship called The Pelican, owned by a famous team of adventurers called the Horizon Flyers. Fortunately, Tommy, the steward of the airship, ends up finding her hiding away in the the storage compartment of the airship. She braces for the worst, only to be caught off by his kind attitude, and provides her a place to stay instead of hiding away from everyone.

Over time, Skye befriends the rest of the crew, eventually allowing herself to bond with them over their mutual love for adventure, exploration, and each other's company. She now seeks a better and brighter future for herself, far away from the place she once used to call home.

Short story I wanted to write. Will only be 10 chapters long.
