Sometime earlier at Justin's office, the sleek and polished space hummed with activity. Justin, impeccably dressed and exuding an aura of power, addressed Luccio, his ever-reliable secretary.
"Luccio," he began, his voice calm and measured, "tell me about that bakery you frequent, the one called 'Space Buns.'" The man was his best hacker. He was a little bit excentric and maybe too loud but he was the best. Him and Celestine were his best assistants, loyal and Justin knew he could count on them. Many times Justin thought to himself that those two were like old married couple.
Luccio blinked, surprised by the unusual question. "Space Buns, sir? You mean the one with the delicious pastries? They truly are the best around." He paused, a flicker of concern crossing his features. "Is everything alright? This isn't something you usually..."
"I just have a craving," Justin cut him off politely. "And since I'm taking a break, would you like me to bring you anything?"
Celestine, who had been listening to the exchange, raised an eyebrow. This sudden interest in pastries was uncharacteristic of Justin, to say the least. "Justin," she said, her voice laced with concern, "is everything alright? This isn't the usual time for you to take a break."
Justin met her gaze, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. "Just a little fresh air, Celestine. Don't worry."
His assistant, Jagna, the ever-present holographic companion, chirped from his shoulder before fading away with a soft chime. Justin then excused himself and swept out of the office, leaving his companions with a sense of unease.
Minutes later, Justin stood before the unassuming exterior of Space Buns.
The aroma of freshly baked bread and sweet pastries wafted through the air, drawing him in like a warm hug. As the doors slid open with a gentle whoosh, he was greeted by a vibrant display of colorful cakes and delicate pastries, each one a visual and olfactory delight.
Behind the counter stood Angelica, the owner, her dark hair cascading down her back as she cheerfully assisted a customer. As she turned, their eyes met, and a flicker of recognition passed between them. Angelica, however, quickly averted her gaze, a wave of panic washing over her. She corrected her hair quickly to make sure her ears aren't visible.
Before she could react, a young woman with an almost ethereal beauty stepped forward, her smile warm and professional.
"Welcome to Space Buns," she greeted Justin, her voice smooth and melodic. "Please feel free to browse our selection of delights."
Justin's eyes widened slightly. He had encountered his fair share of cyborgs over the years, but this… this was something else. The woman's movements were fluid and graceful, her skin a flawless metallic silver with only the faint suggestion of seams where components met. Yet, her eyes held a warmth absent from other cyborgs he'd seen. He was taken aback by how human-like she appeared.
"I must say, your assistant is... impressive," he commented, still taken aback.
The woman offered him a slight bow. "Affirmative. I am Rika. How may I assist you today?"
Justin was fascinated. He'd witnessed advanced androids and even battled some in his line of work, but none had exhibited this level of lifelike grace and presence. His gaze flickered to another nearby figure, similarly striking but for the slightly shorter style of her hair.
As he continued browsing the selection, his gaze kept drifting back to Angelica. He was reminded of the angel who saved him, the ephemeral glow and gentle aura. But he knew, deep down, that the comparison was superficial. The memory of that night was fragmented, the angel's face obscured by the shadows. Angelica's beauty, while undeniable, lacked the ethereal quality he associated with his savior.
Finally, after making his selection, Justin turned to leave. "I'll definitely be back," he said, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. "Thank you for the pastries. And tell me, have we met before?" he looked at her in a way as if she was just an object. His eyes scanned her fully. Especially looked at her eyes and ears. She immediately understood what he was looking for. Any signs of her being a Celestial. Thankfully, her eyes could only shine when she was using her powers.
Angelica felt a lump form in her throat. Lying had never been her forte, but the thought of revealing her true identity sent chills down her spine. "I... I'm not sure," she stammered. "I see many customers in a day..." lying wasn't her best trait that's for sure. She was praying internally that he wouldn't recognize her. The memory of that night flashed in her mind.
Justin leaned closer, his gaze intense, causing Angelica to take an involuntary step back. He intended to scrutinize her features, to see if perhaps the memory of his rescuer simply lay dormant. However, Rika stepped forward, placing herself firmly between them.
"Dear customer," she said, her voice devoid of emotion but firm, "you are making Miss Angelica uncomfortable."
Justin, realizing his actions might be misconstrued, quickly withdrew. "My apologies," he said, his voice sincere. "I will be back, Angelica." With that, he turned and left, leaving behind a bewildered yet slightly relieved Angelica.
Back inside, Rika and Angelica exchanged glances. "He seems... interested," Rika remarked, her voice neutral.
Angelica's heart still raced. "Let's just hope he doesn't return." She knew that if he remained curious, the truth would be difficult to hide.
