"It's very complicated so this may take a while to explain, Sam. I also don't want to scare you too much, so I must ask if you're sure that you want to know about this. You'd be perfectly able to perform your job without this information, but if you really do want to know, I can tell you." Mr. Rodrigo seemed a little pale and concerned.
Sam once again, had to make a hard decision in a short amount of time since she didn't think she would get another chance. She carefully and quickly considered the pros and cons. In the end, she replied, "I think I'd still like to be informed of the current situation, Mr. Rodrigo."
He let out a small sigh, and said, "As you wish then. I'm not sure if you know, but Bethany is currently 23 and in university. We actually already have bodyguards with her on campus, since you still have to go to school. Every other waking moment of your time aside from school should be dedicated to being with her. I hope that you understand that having this job means that almost all your free time will have to dedicated your responsibilities as the bodyguard of someone with an extremely high profile."
Sam has indeed considered this before, but she barely had any hobbies that took a lot of time apart from fighting, so it wasn't an issue. She assumed that she would probably have to work on holidays too, but it didn't bother her too much. She had never experienced so much pressure before, and was growing worried.
Mr. Rodrigo continued, "After Bethany gets her master's degree, I plan on giving her a job in the company and letting her gain experience to eventually take over. By then, she should be about 26. I might also arrange a marriage for her if she doesn't have a lover that I can approve of by the age of 28. Don't worry, I don't judge people by their status of wealth, but by their character."
Sam was slightly confused now. This wasn't really related to the present, but the future. This information was still useful, as she should be expected to know all this if she were to continue pursuing this career. She wished that he would hurry up and explain the present though, since her anticipation was growing. It was also interesting that he felt the need to add that last phrase about how he would evaluate her daughter's lover. He must really care about his public image and that was quite normal for people with his status.
"I hope that you'll still be around for the day she becomes CEO, Sam, as it would also be beneficial for you. Think of how much your salary would grow, being the bodyguard of the CEO! By then, I trust that you two would also have developed a deep bond, and became friends. I know that you must be wondering why I'm rambling about the future when you asked about the present, but I believe that this information is also crucial and wanted to let you know about this timeline." He stopped to let everything he'd said so far to sink in, then continued on.
"Currently, I found out that she's seeing someone. I have no intel on their gender, status, or character, and that worries me. No one's been able to hide from my 'spies' before. This might seem like a really minor thing to be making such a big fuss over and you'd probably think that I'm overreacting, but this is quite serious. You see, these 'spies' are highly trained and are up to the standards of the CIA. If someone can hide from them, then it is quite concerning."
Sam was slowly starting to understand what he was implying. This person could be someone trying to kidnap her and ransom her, or kill her, and it was indeed very dangerous. But there was also the possiblility that they were simply scared, or Bethany might be hiding them from the 'spies'. She just realized what he'd said. Spies?!
She felt the need to ask him to clarify this, so she did. "Um, Mr. Rodrigo, sorry to interrupt, but did I hear you right? You have spies spying on her for you?!" He suddenly looked self-conscious, cleared his throat, and answered hestiantly, "Well, just having bodyguards isn't enough for someone like her. She knows that I have intel on her at all times, and agreed that it was fine. Having these spies has actually saved her life more than once."
Sam nodded, as she understood. As long as it wasn't a breach of privacy, it was fine. After all, Bethany had agreed to this arrangement. Seeing that she was satisfied with his answer, Mr. Rodrigo continued his explanation. "We don't even know if Bethany has willingly entered this relationship, or if she was forced. I haven't talked to her about this yet, as I'm afraid that it will endanger her. I'm sure that you know the saying, 'The less you know, the safer you are.' I understand that it might be cruel to burden someone younger than her, such as you, but it's part of your job, and you made the decision to be informed about this. Please don't worry too much though, as I'm sure things will resolve itself."
Only then, did Sam realize the hole in his story. How had they found out that she was seeing someone if they'd never seen them? If it was a call or if she'd been talking to someone, the intel was actually highly unreliable as there were way too many different scenarios where she might say something pointing to the fact that she was dating someone when she wasn't. And so, Sam felt the urge to ask.
"I understand, Mr. Rodrigo, but I have another question. How did your spies find out that she was seeing someone?" She hoped that she wasn't annoying him with her questions, as she found them essential. Mr. Rodrigo didn't seem to be bothered though, and responded, "We found out through surveillance cameras. She was meeting up with someone wearing a black hoodie, covering their face and also had their back facing the camera. There were no bodyguards present at that moment, and my spies couldn't see their face."
That seemed like an odd thing. Why were there no bodyguards present? And how were the spies not able to see their face in the slightest bit? Even if they didn't see them coming, they should've caught on when they were leaving. This was clearly improbable. Could they not tell the gender through their body shape? Sam had a million other questions swirling through her head as she took in the information.
Seeing her so concentrated, Mr. Rodrigo seemed concerned. He waited to let her think, but what she asked next shocked him. "No offense, sir, but have you ever considered the fact that maybe your spies are being paid to spy on you? There's definitely no way they missed the person when they came and left. I also want to see the recording. This whole thing seems very suspicious, and I think I can help you get to the bottom of this."
