"We're gonna have to say goodbye to this house soon..." Aalet looked around in slight disappointment.
"It's a shame really, but that's what our base is for!" Etta responded before a cat meowed and approached her rubbing its scent all over her clothes, "Tabby, sorry we're late today, but look at who we brought back with us!" she grabbed Rumire and drew her close to the cat.
Rumire, confused, gently caressed the cat making it purr to the touch of her soft petite hands; this triggered a response for her to smile and urge to stroke it more. Both Etta and Aalet walked into the kitchen leaving Rumire to play with the cat.
"I'll get the other ingredients!" said Etta.
"Okay, I'll set it up." Aalet nods to Etta holding a chopping board and a pan.
Etta walks over to and opens the fridge looking for the other ingredients but her eyes latch onto something else, something she despises.
"ALMOND MILK?!" she yelled before grabbing the drink from the fridge, "Is this what you bought the other day, Aalet?"
"I just wanted to give it a try..." Aalet said quietly.
"This is disgusting!" she threw the drink out the open window, "Be normal!"
Aalet stared at her, then to the window, lastly the almond milk outside.
"You okay?" he tilted his head slightly seeming genuinely concerned with the detestation from out of nowhere.
Etta backed away.
"I-I'm sorry, that was incredibly unnecessary of me." she stuttered and looked down to the floor expressing her guilt through avoiding eye contact.
"It's okay, I'll just get another one." he said in an unbothered tone, "You found the ingredients?"
"Yes." she promptly replied still avoiding eye contact, "Here." she handed a pot of yogurt.
Aalet takes the yogurt out of her hand, then the next item and the item after that.
"Thank you, now let me cook." he said while putting on an apron which read 'Violence is Tradition'.
First, he poured oil into a pan and left it to heat. Next, he placed the vegetables - tomatoes and onions - on the chopping board and gets to work after having washed his hands. After, he set the vegetables to one side he moved onto the coriander. Then, threw in the onions into the pan until they were golden brown. Afterwards, he introduced garlic and ginger into the mix letting them sit for a minute.
"Etta, can I get the seasonings?" Aalet asked.
"Yeah." she hands over the seasonings individually into Aalet's hands.
Following on, Aalet added the seasonings: turmeric, cumin, coriander and chillies and left them to toast. After that, he added the pieces of chicken he chopped earlier and cooked them until they browned; introduced the chopped tomatoes until they broke down, and the coriander; poured in yogurt and mixed it well just to let it simmer for a few minutes. Finally, he added coconut milk and salt then stirred, covered, and simmered waiting until the chicken was cooked throughout.
"Now we wait." he folded his arms.
Etta continued to keep her distance from Aalet but still watched from behind, this got the attention of Aalet
"Etta, I can tell you're not okay..." Aalet stated.
"Shut up…"
"Etta." he said slightly surprised but remained calm.
"Shut up!" Etta stormed out the kitchen and rushed up the stairs also gaining the attention of Rumire.
"Uh..." Rumire put on a worried expression and gets up off the floor leaving the cat, Tabby, behind to follow Etta.
"Rumire!" Aalet picked up Rumire and brought her close to his chest startling her, but she quickly understood the situation and let go of her instinct to struggle, "Let her have her moment, okay?"
—IN ETTA'S ROOM—
Etta, upon entering her room, slammed the door behind her and rest her weight on the back of a chair.
"One week before we are kicked out of the house? No, that can't be. Living with a monster and spirit, especially one that uses the body of my friend as a vessel? That's even worse! And I'm just letting this all happen because why?" Etta picked up the chair she was resting on and threw it at the door breaking it, her left eye flared red as she did.
The room fell quiet just as the girl whose tears rolled down their face.
"Why did you have to go out like that, John?" she muttered with sorrow, "You left everyone!"
Memories associated with the individual in mind flooded her brain and just as it entered it immediately departed, from the day they met to the day they left.
"You left me..." she continued to weep into her arm.
After some time she raised her head off of her arm and roamed her room aimlessly eventually coming across her mirror, there, she noticed that her right eye had switched pigments.
"No matter how hard I try, I am not truly normal am I?"
—WITH AALET AND RUMIRE—
"Rumire!" Aalet shouted, "Come over."
"Mhm!" Rumire complied and made her way over to Aalet, she was picked up and seated on a chair barely being able to rest her arms on the table, "Ah."
"Hmm." Aalet scratched his chin, "Oh, I have an idea!" he picked the chair up with Rumire still seated and placed a large stool under the legs of the chair, "Hmm, that's a bit dangerous."
As Aalet put the stool back in its previous spot and carefully lowered Rumire down, footsteps that belonged to Etta quietly made their way down the stairs.
"Are you feeling better now, Etta?" Aalet asked, noticing the red in her eye.
"Yes, I am..."
"Great, then food is served!" he said while placing the plates of food onto the table
"Food!" Rumire's anticipation shared no equal.
"How about you let Rumire sit with you?" Aalet suggested.
As Aalet made the suggestion he slid Rumire's plate over to where Etta sat, Rumire jumped straight onto her lap surprising her, however, Etta couldn't help but smile a bit which, in turn, put a smile on Aalet's face as well; the three enjoyed a great meal together, quite like a family reunion.
"…Hey, Aalet..." Etta grabs the attention of Aalet, still looking a bit dejected.
"What is it?" Aalet responds.
"I'm sorry for what I-" she was interrupted by Aalet.
"It's okay." he smiled , "I'll get another one."
"A-alright." she replied with her own smile, "Maybe I should quit always thinking about John, he's gone now." she thought while spoon feeding Rumire.
In a world full of violence and monsters referred to as 'Monstra' that accompany this world's violence, many people have to fight to keep living, even amongst themselves.
We all face hardships, it’s what makes us grow as people, but people fail to see the message behind their struggles and might even misinterpret them; it takes a little bit of guidance to fall back onto the right path.
A bit of a personal one here but deep down, I want people to read this story and see how Aalet changes character from beginning to end and then learn from it, this is meant to be a spiritual adventure after all!
