“You fucking idiot!” Gunnar yelled, throwing a potato at him as the young man ducked.
“I was only coming to get you after Sir Halfdan told me to.”
Emily laughed, getting up from her seat as Gunnar followed Einar out into the feast hall and out the door.
Halfdan stood with Bjorn near the gates. “WOLVES!” He shouted.
Gunnar growled, becoming annoyed at his interruption. “ONE FUCKING SECOND IT’S THAT FOOL ERIK! THEN THE NEXT FUCKING SECOND IT’S SOME DUMB FUCKING WOLVES!”
“Oh calm your tits, Gunnar. I spotted tracks leading up to a lake,” Halfdan stated, pointing out of the gates.
“I haven’t seen them yet. But no doubt, those were some big tracks.”
“Big wolves?” Einar questioned.
“The tracks were around two feet wide, so yes, big wolves.”
Gunnar interrupted. “I wouldn’t just call those big wolves. More like big fucking wolves.”
“Oh watch your mouth,” Halfdan stated, shaking his head. “When Hanna arrives in a few days are you going to curse like that around her?”
“She’s mute isn’t she? What is she going to do, complain?”
Bjorn cleared his throat, finding his will to speak. “Well, Sir Gunnar, just because Lady Hanna is mute, does not mean she is deaf or stupid. Even a mute person can feel uncomfortable with harsh words.”
“I know that.”
“Anyways, to the matter at hand. I have no idea where there are such large wolves this far south and to the coast, but I think I have an idea who put them there.”
Gunnar’s eyebrows flew upwards. “Who?”
“Erik, of course. He’s stupid if he doesn’t think we know it was him.” Halfdan turned hearing leaves cracking from under the footsteps of heavy feet.
“Did you say wolves?” Sigurd asked, shaking his head.
“Yes, five of them. Very big wolves. It would be no use trying to kill them as we’d die fighting them. My belief is that they belong to Erik and are merely there either because they came with him, or he is testing us.”
“Testing?” Bjorn asked, stepping closer to the older Knight.
“Yes, if we kill his wolves he’d have a reason to remove Sigurd off the heir list because as of now, I’d say he has yet to win the hearts of nobles.” Halfdan stared at Sigurd, but his words did not sound like he was admitting he was here at all.
“You mean kill?”
Halfdan nodded. “If we leave the wolves be then we’d admitted we are on Erik’s side.”
Gunnar gasped. “You speak like we are involved in a war.”
“No, Gunnar. A political war is a war. When Erik returns, the way in which he spoke, sounded as though he’ll be in Bergen to engage with his father. He’d have no other reason to come here.”
“Then what do you suggest we do?” Sigurd asked, his usual poker face on.
“Is it not obvious? We leave the wolves alone. Just don’t go past the gates anymore at all, unless it’s by road. The wolf track’s were on the opposite side so we should be fine for now at least.”
They all nodded, besides Sigurd. “Is this all?” Gunnar asked.
“Why are you so lazy?” Halfdan asked, a shift in his tone.
“I was busy doing… other things.”
Einar laughed, making kissing noises with his mouth. “Oh shut it, you dumb-” Gunnar looked at the sour look Halfdan gave him before his final word exited his mouth, he excused himself and ran back to the long house.
