Arlo was sitting at the kitchen table watching his sister changing her outfit for the third time.
“Mom, my clothes are hopeless! I have nothing to wear!” She cried in agony running to her room and coming back with some stuff in her hands.
“Keep it cool sis, you look just fine. Nobody will look at your clothes. Everyone will only see the big red pimple on your forehead.” Arlo smiled mischievously at his sister.
“What?!” Jenny ran to the bathroom.
Arlo packed his stuff and finished the sandwich made by his mom. Dad was a bit nervous and mom was correcting his tie.
“You look good honey, you will do a great job. I’m sure of it.” She kissed his cheek.
“Good luck dad.” Arlo added.
“Thank you and you to have a great day at your new school.” Dad left and Arlo impatiently called for Jenny.
“Come on, we need to go now!”
Jenny came with a grim expression.
“That wasn’t funny Arlo.” She grabbed her bag and headed to the lift. Arlo said goodbye to his mom and followed his younger sister.
The school wasn’t far away from the block they were living in. The building looked neat and modern. In the car park Arlo saw some really expensive car models. That alone gave him the idea what kind of people are attending this school.
“You are here!” Elen was standing at the entrance and waving at them.
“Come, I will show you around.”
Elen was quick, in no time they were registered, their schedules were in their hands along with the codes to the lockers.
“Jenny, you are with me in the class, isn’t it cool?” Elen was giggling with excitement and unhidden joy.
“Arlo, your classroom is the last on the left.” Elen explained before she disappeared with Jenny.
Arlo took his bag and went in the direction of his new classroom. The corridor was wide and bright due to a row of windows with a view on the sport’s field. The students were throwing glances at him and Arlo felt like an alien.
The classroom was spacious and bright too. There were only a few students there and Arlo was thinking where he should sit down when the teacher came. It was a middle aged woman, a little plump with big glasses and some books in her hands.
“Oh, you must be the new one. My name is Ms Hill, I teach math. You can sit in the last row, I think the middle seat is free.” Just as she finished that sentence the class was filled with students, there were over twenty of them, all looking at Arlo.
“Come on everyone sit down, as you can see we have a new student. His name is Arlo.” Ms Hill introduced him and Arlo felt forced to greet everyone.
“Hi.” He managed to spout and smiled only to notice the familiar face coming in. It was the guy from the big three or whatever. He even introduced himself to Arlo but to be frank he forgot that guy’s name.
Arlo sat down in the last row and focused on arithmetic. He wasn’t looking around deliberately, he kind of felt insecure and was sure that everyone was looking at him.
Soon the lesson was over and Arlo was approached by a few curious students.
‘Hi, I’m Don.” A blond tall guy with a baseball cap introduced himself.
“Hi.” Arlo stood up and decided to put on a friendly smile.
“Oh my god, you look so cute.” Two girls sighted looking at him.
“And do you like cute boys?” Arlo decided to strike back, he was tired of that adjective.
“Man, you sure act fast.” Don noticed. “Where are you from?”
“Well since yesterday I have been living here, not far away. My family and I moved from Wilerby. My sister is here too.”
“You have a sister? How old is she?” Don’s interest grew.
“She’s sixteen.”
“Does she look like you?” Don’s eyes sparkled.
“Pretty much but she has blue eyes and longer hair.” Arlo knew that kind of look, he immediately thought that his sister would surely become popular here.
“So we meet again, Arlo Hanny.” Arlo looked to the side. The tall guy from the park was here, in an instant all the others made place for him. The guy was beaming with confidence, he was dressed to kill. Arlo wasn’t into fashion but he wasn’t that ignorant too so he noticed that the guy was dressed in top brands.
“Yeah, we do.” Arlo lowered his head to pick his stuff. Something about that guy made him feel uncomfortable and he wanted to avoid him.
“Arlo, you need to come with me.” His sister suddenly burst into his classroom drawing all the attention to herself and giving Arlo a great opportunity to escape the unwelcomed company.
“Excuse me, I need to go.” Arlo was about to leave when he was stopped by a single sentence.
“Why don’t you introduce me?” The guy tilled his head a bit and sat on the table next to him.
“This is my sister Jenny.” He introduced his sister and now the awkward part, he forgot the guy's name.
“Tod Frenwor.” He introduced himself with a charming smile. Arlo could see Jenny’s eyes going round. “It seems your brother forgot my name, how disappointing.” He looked intensively at Arlo, making him shiver inside.
“Nice to meet you.” Jenny smiled, she was immediately in a flirty mode.
“I’m sorry, my memory isn’t as good as yours. Now excuse us.” Arlo grabbed Jenny’s hand and they left together, only then Arlo was able to calm down. What was wrong with him?
Tod was approached by his best friend Andrew.
“So it’s him.”
“Yeah.” Tod smirked.
“I have to admit I’m jealous, he is a real cute one and so unspoiled.” Andrew leaned and whispered into Tod’s ear.
“Would you share?”
“No.” Tod pushed him aside and got up from the table.
“He’s mine. I can’t wait to begin the hunting game.” Tod looked at Andrew who smiled and only added.
“Poor guy. I feel sorry for him for catching your attention.”
