As the fireflies flew away the man was left behind all alone with tears streaming down his face. But before Marianne could approach him his body started changing and suddenly the woman from before was standing where he stood seconds before. Shocked she watched as the woman wiped away her tears.
At that moment she realized why his eyes were so familiar, they were the same that the people of the Silon family had. But from what she knew someone like him never existed, to be precise neither the woman nor the man were part of the history she knew.
Yet after seeing them she just couldn't forget the look in their eyes. They were full of sorrow and pain, but at the same time they seemed happy next to each other. It was as if the whole world wanted them together but destiny tore them apart.
Up to this point she didn't think that anybody really cared about anyone else besides themselves as long as they didn't profit from it, after all that was the kind of society she was raised in. But after seeing everything as a spectator she realised that everyone she met after escaping didn't expect her to be anything but herself, it was as if the invisible burden she had carried for so long was starting to crumble.
A sense of relieve flooded her knowing that she had someone she could rely on and just as she wanted to give in and open her heart a little a voice appeared next to her.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you."
"What, why?! Why should you be able to open up your heart to someone and I shoudn't!", shouted Marianne confused and angry as she was brought back to the place full of darkness.
"I'm trying to protect you, have you forgotten what happened the last time you trusted someone?"
"I haven't", she said with a trembling voice. "But I can't just judge them because of my past experiences all they've ever showed me was kindness..."
"But so did he and how did that turn out?"
"I'm sure he had his own reasons!"
"Then why do you keep on torturing yourself because of him?"
"... But they're not the same person."
But just as those words slipped her mouth she knew that that wasn't what she really thought. Just because she didn't want to accept it didn't mean she didn't know the truth, in fact she was aware of it the whole time, but she just hoped that it would get better as time passed.
"If you really think like that then why didn't you open up to them before."
"..."
"Look I'm not trying to-", started the woman before she was interrupted.
"I tried to alright? I tried to open up to them but each time I got scared, I thought of what would happen to me if even they were to turn their backs on me after everything. Why can't I just have a normal life? Why do I have to be the one that brings harm to everyone I care for? Each time I think it will be different they end up even more miserable than before."
"That's not true, what about that boy?", meant the woman in an attempt to cheer her up.
"I tortured him and used him. And do you know what's the worst part about it? The person I did it for forsaked me, but he just forgave me and acted like nothing happened. And now that the same thing happened to me I'm a complete mess and can't do anything on my own, while he was able to overcome it so easily!"
She expected the woman to tell her that it was her fault or just say anything at all, but she didn't, instead she just looked at her quietly before slowly opening her mouth.
"You shouldn't compare yourself to others."
"What?"
"Everybody is different so you don't have to react the same way as someone else and instead of comparing yourself to that boy you should be glad that he was able to move on and forgive you. That is something that I wasn't able to reach even after my death."
"Who's forgiveness are you seeking?", asked Marianne, surprised that someone as aloof as her would ever want something as trivial as someone's forgiveness. But then again she also didn't expect her to be able to be nice before seeing her memories.
"Of someone very important to me, but it doesn't look like I'll be able to ask for his forgiveness any time soon, after all he died many years ago."
"I'm sorry."
"For what? It's not like you killed him."
"I know, but I didn't want to make you remember your painful memories."
"I wouldn't call them painful memories, in fact the memories I made with him are the happiest I have. So there's no need to apologize in fact I'm grateful, thanks to you I was able to remember the reason I still exist", said the woman and for the first time she saw her smile. It wasn't a mischevious smile like before, but a real honest smile.
Looking at her Marianne understood why that man had fallen for her. If she was in a good mood like today she was very energetic and in her eyes there was this spark that could make everyone smile, but at the same time she had this sly look on her face that made it look like she had just planned a prank. And yet if she needed to she could be cold and calculating.
"Do you think you're ever going to meet him again?"
"What? Who?"
"That man you were with in almost all your memories, he's the one you were talking about, right? I can help you search for him."
"There's no need", said the woman turning her face away with a stone cold voice.
~Looks like I said something wrong again...~
"It's time for you to go, and don't expect me to be nice to you again next time we meet, today was an exception."
"I know, there's no need to worry."
As she slowly regained her consciousness she noticed two things.
First off she was all alone in the room and there were a handful people talking outside.
Second of all this wasn't her room and it wasn't the hospital either it was way too dark for that and the walls were decorated with massive paintings. The massive paintings she had chosen for her old room when she was ten.
And just as she was about to get up she heard someone opening the door and walking towards the bed to check on her, so she did the only thing she could think of at that moment. She acted as if she was dead.
After today's episode I'll be taking a break for some time, before I'll start again with a new part as we'll be seeing Marianne's and Silas' backstory. I'll be back on the April 02.
