*Grandpa voice* Back in my day *grandpa voice over* the world of browser flash games was the wild wild west in the eyes of younger me. Countless hours were poured into anywhere from hundreds to thousands (closer to thousands) of free flash games of varying quality. Some were great and went on to become full fledged Steam releases, and some I clicked off of in the first couple of minutes. With the near endless amount of gaming I'd done with these games, it's impossible to remember every single game that I've played...but these ones stood out. Not because they were necessarily better than the others, not even the most original in some cases, but I loved them. They were irreplaceable.
Starting with the most simple game of the bunch, let's call this one "Anime Clash". This title, somewhat, explaining the point of the game, and if I'm remembering correctly, this name was actually pretty similar to the game's real name. That's IF I'm remembering correctly. The game let you choose between 2 characters, Itachi from the Naruto series....aaaannddd...some other guy. He's probably from some popular anime and if I saw him now, I may be able to recognize him...but since I had no idea who that man was back then, I have no idea who he us now. After selecting your character, you would fight against the opposite character in some random area with a dark blue background, reminiscent, but not the same, as Final Destination from Super Smash Bros. From what I remember, each character has a basic attack and a variety of special attacks...or maybe JUST special attacks, because not one attack felt basic. Itachi used a mix of fireballs, shurikens, he even used his susanoo! And for the other guy, I'm sure his attacks were cool as well! My lack of memory on this game does it no justice, but I remember being highly impressed on how it didn't need fancy graphics, complex combat, or even a roster higher than 2 to be insanely fun!
The next game I have even LESS recollection of, isn't that great! I do know a game it was directly similar to, though! This game had the exact same playstyle as the game King of Fighters vs. DNF, which is a flash game where you pick a character and go through 2D levels fighting hordes of enemies using a mix of basic and special moves, both being extremely flashy. Now take this concept and throw Power Rangers onto it! You choose a specific ranger and fight your way through multiple enemies, Dynasty Warriors style! The main problem with this game was that , the characters you pick, weren't actually Power Rangers at all! Or maybe they were? They didn't look exactly like the Power Rangers I grew up with, but more like characters heavily inspired and influenced by Power Rangers...oh and the game's text was in complete Japanese so I couldn't even look it up if I wanted to. It was tons of fun, though!
This final game is by far the most played by me, and more than likely, the hardest to find. When I first remember playing it, it was called "AA Cat Fight". Actually remembering a title for once, look at me go! Sadly, since the words from the title are so popular and generic, it's been hard to find the game again. "AA Cat Fight" was a 2D fighting game with a large variety of weird and unique cats to choose from, with vastly different movesets between them. For example, one character was a cat in a box with a gun, and another was a big hulking bruiser! The game had a very distinct artstyle, and it was, by no means, a traditional fighter! Characters had different grand attacks they could use, all with immense levels of spectacle! The game was either in Chinese or Japanese, a language I couldn't read, and one that makes it much harder to find. It wasn't on popular flash websites like Y8, Kongregate, or Newgrounds, but on an obscure website that, of course, I don't remember. (Small update - I think it was on twoplayergames.org but I could be wrong). I still hope to find the game someday, the closest I came was a couple of years ago, while extensively searching for the game, I came across a video of the cats in the same artstyle. It wasn't THE game, just another that involved the cats. Which likely means it's an entire franchise, which is good news, right!? That means it'll be easier to find the game and even play other similar games! Which would all be possible, if the videos weren't titled in Chinese or Japanese letters (I really don't know which one it was I hope I'm not being insensitive). I'll try to find them all, and hopefully will succeed someday, but I know for a FACT, that I wasn't the only one to experience these games!
