Obscurity Book 2-Love Life

Chapter 8-Painful Reunion

Chapter 8-Painful Reunion

Mar 09, 2024

Having driven to the scene and discretely changing away from his car, Obscurity emerged from his hiding spot in his black and white suit. His gaze shifted around the crowded and confused streets at the edge of downtown as a mass of police officers and vehicles blocked off certain sections of the area. Darting behind objects in the street as not to be noticed by them, he made his way to the problem.
He could hear a rumbling in the streets, almost like a small earthquake. Ducking behind one of the cars, he looked up and realized what was going on. In the densely populated crowd, he could see a large figure rampaging among them. His thick goggles, his large gauntlets, all of his features were enough for Obscurity to recognize.
    "Killy..."
In a confused rush, Obscurity turned away, trying to steady his breath. He wasn't sure how, but Killy was back. Slightly shaking, he got back up to get a better look at him. The large man was acting different than the last time Obscurity saw him. He seemed more irritated and erratic. He was throwing thing manhole covers and pieces of the road every which way.
Obscurity jumped up from the hood of the car into the blocked off area. Standing right in front of him, he could see just how violent he was. With open arms, he started to talk to him in a somewhat joking tone. "Hey, man! It's been a while. How's it been?"
Without hesitation, Killy rushed at Obscurity, who barely dodged his blow. Killy's fist lodged itself into the road, but was quickly pulled up with a violent tug. "Right, not much of a talker, I forgot," Obscurity said, turning back at him in a slouched manner. As he dodged another punch, he added, "Really, where've you been? It's been half a year. I thought you'd be over me by now."
"YOU," Killy shouted after finding his balance and pointing at him with his massive metal glove. "I'm GONNA TEAR YOU TO SHREDS FOR WHAT YOU DID!"
"Woah, hey man," Obscurity started, holding up his hands in defense. "I'm just doing my job. I'm sure if we just talked about this, we could get it all sorted out."
One of the officers called out to Obscurity. "KID, YOU GOTTA COME BACK HERE! WE'RE HANDLING THIS!"
"NO!" Killy stomped to an old repair shop from where they were, tearing off a door from one of the broken cars. With a slight stain, he threw it at the officer, who barely avoided it. "THIS IS BETWEEN ME AND HIM!"
"Come on man, they were about to finish this road for once," Obscurity half-sarcastically blurted out.
"GRRREEAAAAAGGGHHH!!!" Killy leapt at Obscurity with his hands in front of him, ready to catch. When he did, Obscurity struggled a bit before Killy started to breath heavily. "HOW ABOUT YOU TRY TALKING WITH A BUNCH OF GRAVEL IN YOUR FACE?!" He threw Obscurity into the road face first, slightly scuffing his face.
Feeling the painful heat, Obscurity held his face in his hand as he got up. When another officer tried to get close to the two, Killy threw another car part. Grabbing him by the back of his suit, Killy threw Obscurity to the brick building across the street. As he saw his enemies body drop to the sidewalk, he stepped over to a traffic light and prepared to pull. Using a punch to loosen the metal, he was able to rip off the pole and grip it in his hand like a baseball bat.
As he swung, Obscurity realized what was happening and quickly got up. As the pole started to hit the building, the horizontal piece holding the lights broke off, leaving a straight object that sparked while it rubbed against the building. Obscurity quickly jumped up before it could hit him, holding a hand to the building in order to stabilize himself.
"What's going on here, Killy," Obscurity asked. "Why're you doing this again?"
Killy swung the other way, which Obscurity dodged with a duck. "I want you to feel the same pain you've caused me," Killy growled as he started to lift the pole above his head. In only a few seconds, he started to throw the pole down. Obscurity looked up at the falling object and quickly jumped to his right, stumbling a bit as he did.
    KSHKOOOOOM!
The crowd watched as the pole finally hit the concrete below, causing a small explosion. Bits of brick from the building flew everywhere, landing in the road and hitting cars. Obscurity fell from his feet and rolled into the gravel once again, trying to avoid the blast.
Killy dropped the pole and turned to face Obscurity. The large man started to step over to him, ignoring the calls and cries of the police all around them.
Obscurity staggered up, holding his chest as he panted heavily. Before he could do anything else, he felt Killy's metal gauntlet slightly press up against him, pinning him to the wall. He could faintly notice the eyes behind Killy's goggles turn into a cold scowl, glaring down at him.
"You and your little pointy-headed friend," Killy started, "have caused me so much more pain than I though your little game of dress-up could have done to me. But that pails in comparison to when you left me for dead in his office. When I eventually got out of that mess, I had to explain to my family why I was gone for a week and a half!" With his other hand, Killy grabbed Obscurity by his suit and threw him back into the road. Keeping up his scowl, he looked back at the person laying before him.
"Now you try and explain it to yours."
As a small fire started to take place where he slammed the pole on the ground, Killy jumped from the scene, putting his hands on the hoods of two parked cars and launching himself away from the barricade. In an instant, he was out of sight, landing somewhere in the neighborhood not far from where they were.
"Get... back here," Obscurity weakly called, holding his hand out in that direction. "Come on..." He looked up in the sky as he thought about what happened. Holding the top of his head, he pulled himself up from the road. After a second, he noticed a mass of firetrucks starting to arrive at the scene. He quickly dusted himself off and went to go hide in the repair shop while things started to die down.
When he found a spot where he could hide away, Obscurity quickly took off his somewhat tattered suit. Before he could take his mask off, he felt his phone start to buzz. He took it out of his bag and checked who it was. With a quick glance, he read Kelly's name in the contact box. His face winced before he poked the button.
    "Hello?"
"Daimian," Kelly started, her voice filled with worry. "Where did you go? Is everything alright?"
Obscurity looked around for a minute, stammering for an answer. "I, well... I," he paused. He could still hear the muffled sounds of sirens from where he was, but not enough to reach the phone. "I don't know."
    "What happened?"
Still thinking about everything, Obscurity winced again and continued stammering. "A lot, I guess. Look, I'm sorry I ran off so suddenly, but there was something really important I had to check on. There's a whole mess happening right now and I don't know how to feel about it." Obscurity sighed.
"Well, I mean, it's alright, I guess," Kelly mentioned. "I just hope that you're safe, is all."
There was a long pause as Obscurity tried to find something to say to her. After nearly a minute, he finally said, "I am now that you're here." He heard a relieved chuckle from the other end, causing him to smile. "I have an idea," he started. "How about we grab lunch some time this weekend?"
"I'd love to," Kelly said with a slight gasp. "Where were you thinking?"
Obscurity shrugged. "I'm not too sure. But we'll have to talk about it later. I gotta be going."
"Oh, okay," Kelly said. "Just hit me up later and we can work something out!"
"Sounds good. I'll talk to you later."
    "Alright. Bye, Dai-"
Before she could finish, Obscurity hung up the phone as the sound of footsteps got closer. In an instant, he jumped back and left without a trace, taking off his mask as he did. He started to put on his normal clothes as he heard the sounds of confusion of the men behind him. As if he was only just getting there, he walked to his car and started to head home.
