Justin quickly went towards Space Buns, a familiar wave of worry washing over him. The aroma of freshly baked cinnamon rolls and buttery croissants wafted out, a warm and comforting scent. Stepping inside, he was greeted by a scene bustling with weekend activity.
The gentle strains of a piano filled the air, a peaceful jazz melody that intermingled with the cheerful chatter of customers and the rhythmic clinking of plates. The staff, donned in crisp white aprons, bustled about, their movements synchronized in a well-rehearsed dance of serving orders. Customers, a mix of families and friends, occupied the cozy tables, relishing the sweet treats spread before them.
Despite the lively atmosphere, a pang of disappointment struck Justin as he scanned the room. Angelica's usual spot behind the counter was empty, and her ever-present android twins, Riku and Rika, were conspicuously absent. Approaching a young waitress with flour dusting her cheeks, Justin decided to see what he could learn.
"Excuse me," he began politely, "Do you know where Angelica might be? I'm a friend."
The waitress blinked, a momentary flicker of confusion crossing her features. She checked him out and her face flushed. Justin was a very handsome man after all and many times he was using it. "Angelica?" she echoed, tilting her head slightly. "Oh no, Miss Angelica isn't covering any weekend shifts this time around. She’ll be back on Monday” her eyes were filled with curiosity. He knew that look all too well but he wasn’t interested. As always.
“Aww that’s a shame” his tone was playful to hide his worry “I like talking with her”
“Oh…” the girl sounded disappointed “Well…then I can only say that you should come back on Monday, Sir tho…I can help with anything if you’d like to” she tried her best to smile at him. He had to admit, the girl was quite pretty but his thoughts were now somewhere else.
Disappointment gnawed at him.
"Thank you," Justin mumbled, his voice strained with a worry he couldn't quite mask. The cozy music, once soothing, now seemed to mock his unease. He left the building.
The weird feeling of being uneasy filled him. When was the last time he felt that because of the girl? He doesn’t remember.
Justin murmured "Jagna" under his breath, a touch of desperation lacing his voice. The tiny fairy materialized in a shimmer of light, her gossamer wings fluttering softly. Unlike the commercially available AI assistants, Jagna was a prototype, a project his parents had begun before their…well, their absence. Justin cherished her, the last remaining piece of their legacy. Unlike the mass-produced AI assistants, Jagna couldn't be accessed by just anyone. She was linked to a small, unassuming bracelet on his wrist – a silent guardian angel, always within reach.
"Jagna," he said, his voice low and urgent. "Call Luccio and Celestine."
The fairy whirred with activity, and in seconds, holographic images of his companions flickered to life.
"She wasn't there," Justin stated bluntly, the worry etching lines on his forehead.
Luccio's image bristled. "Boss, come on," he said, his voice tight. "We can't just-"
"Appreciate the advice, Luccio," Justin cut him off, his jaw set in a determined line. "But for now, I need her address."
Celestine, ever the pragmatist, simply raised an eyebrow. "Justin, this is reckless."
But Justin knew his mind was made. There was a growing sense of responsibility, a spark of something protective flickering within him. He couldn't just sit back and wait. He needed to see Angelica for himself, to understand what was happening. He wanted to see if she’s safe.
The holographic display flickered, an address appearing before him. He knew it was not the best option but something in his gut told him it was a risk he couldn't afford to avoid. With a resolute nod, Justin dismissed the connection, the weight of his decision settling on his shoulders.
Silence hung heavy in the air after Justin's holographic image vanished. Luccio and Celestine exchanged a worried glance. The stoic facade Celestine usually wore had cracked, revealing a flicker of genuine concern beneath.
Celestine, ever the stoic observer, surprised even herself. "I'm… actually surprised," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. She had known Justin since he was a gangly eight-year-old, his emotions as transparent as a crystal goblet. Yet, here he was, a flicker of something akin to desperation igniting his usually calm demeanor. It was a side of him she had rarely witnessed.
Luccio raised an eyebrow, surprised by her reaction. "Surprised by what, exactly?"
"By Justin's impulsiveness," Celestine explained. "He's never shown such… an interest in anyone before." Her voice held a hint of something akin to maternal concern, a side rarely seen by outsiders.
Luccio chuckled, a low rumble. "Well, you can't blame the guy, Celestine. The girl is probably the same one who saved his life, then vanished into thin air. Curiosity's bound to piqued."
His playful facade momentarily replaced with seriousness, mirrored her concern. "But I’m also quite surprised by this situation. He's never shown such…an interest in anyone before. Always the workaholic our little young boss.”
“He is…complicated. He just met so many wrong people in his life; women who tried to use him only for his wealth and position.” her voice was calm but Luccio already knew her well enough to understand that beneath it, there was a huge concern “him being a half breed wasn’t helpful either.”
"Do you think… this curiosity might not just be because he suspects her of being the angel? Maybe he's developed a bit of a… crush?"
A single, barely audible chuckle escaped Celestine's lips, a sound so rare it felt like a seismic shift. Luccio was taken back by a surprise and almost blushed. He wanted to hear more of her laughs.
To Celesine the idea of Justin experiencing the throes of romantic infatuation seemed utterly outlandish. "I've known him since he was a gangly eight-year-old," she continued, a hint of amusement dancing in her eyes. "Dating held little to no interest for him back then and now as well. For him to fall in love? Iwell, that would truly be a miracle."
Luccio couldn't help but grin. "Well, miracles do happen, Celestine. Maybe this Angelica is the one to crack his stoic shell."
The notion hung in the air, both a possibility and a source of amusement. While their primary concern remained Angelica's well-being and her possible connection to the events, a seed of intrigue had been planted. Could their stoic, workaholic boss be experiencing something akin to…human emotions?
"Honestly," Celestine admitted, a faint smile gracing her lips, a sight rarely witnessed by Luccio. "I wouldn't mind it. Seeing Justin happy…is my wish"
Luccio couldn't help but stare at her, momentarily captivated by the rare display of emotion. He longed to see that smile more often, a bright spark in the rigid world they inhabited. A pang of sorrow, sudden and sharp, pierced his chest. She was an Angel, a celestial being, existing on a plane far above him. He, a mere human, could never dream of such a thing. Yet, Celestine held an ethereal beauty that transcended their difference, a radiant star illuminating his ordinary existence.
"Then we support our young boss, wouldn't you agree?" Luccio returned, forcing a smile. He would do anything to see Celestine's happiness, even if it meant aiding a blossoming affection that could never truly bloom. Just being by her side, watching her smile, that was enough for him.
