Later that night, Dominic received a call from Lena, Charlotte’s sister.
It had been three months since they last met, though they used to chat and meet up for drinks every weekend.
This was back when Charlotte and Dominic were dating, eventually leading to their whirlwind engagement and wedding plans.
Lena’s call brought back memories, and Dominic’s face displayed a mix of pain and pleasure.
“Hello,” Dominic greeted, putting his phone on loudspeaker and beginning to undress.
“Hi, Dom,” Lena’s high-pitched voice made him smirk inwardly.
He started by asking, “How are the kids doing?”
Her twin children, Alexander and Alexandria, were dear to him, and he used to spend time with them, buying them gifts and even babysitting when Charlotte had errands to run. That was when he played the role of their uncle.
“They’re growing,” Lena replied, her voice tinged with sadness.
“Have they started being brats?” he inquired, undoing his belt.
Lena could hear the sound of the belt from the other end of the phone and playfully remarked, “You know what you’re doing is wrong, right?”
“Whatever,” he responded.
“It’s about my sister,” Lena confessed.
“What about Charli?” he asked.
As Lena continued, her voice grew more sorrowful, “She’s torn my family apart.”
Dominic didn’t doubt her, as he had his share of experiences with Charlotte. Just hearing her name made his throat tighten.
“You know my kids… she told Liam he’s not their father. He wants to do testing to prove it.”
“Are they his?” Dominic asked coldly but for a necessary reason.
Lena took a long pause before replying, “I think so.”
“Well, then that’s not a big deal. Your sister has caused quite a mess out here, you know. You should be grateful that’s all she did,” he said, his voice deep.
Sighing, Lena admitted, “I know.”
“If there’s nothing else, I need to take a shower, and maybe…” she abruptly cut the call.
Lena knew how to escape those moments when Dominic’s conversation veered into uncomfortable territory.
After the call, Lena couldn’t hold back her tears, wishing that what she had shared on the phone wasn’t true.
Of course, the children were Liam’s. He had a twin sister; it shouldn’t have been difficult for him to do the math.
Her concern wasn’t the children’s legitimacy; it was her sister, Charlotte.
She remembered…
Charlotte and Lena are half-sisters, sharing the same father but having different mothers.
Charlotte and Lena were three years apart due to their father’s affair with Charlotte’s mother.
Charlotte’s birth resulted in her mother’s death during childbirth, and she was placed in foster care as they searched for a family to adopt her.
Their father, acknowledging Charlotte’s existence, pleaded with Lena’s mother to adopt her, confessing that she was his illegitimate child.
Though Charlotte was adopted into the family, her arrival sparked tension, and Lena held her responsible for their family’s troubles.
Despite being children at the time, Lena recalled how she used to share her belongings with Charlotte.
Lena was generally a cheerful child, but when angered, she withdrew, with Charlotte being the only person she felt comfortable around.
In high school and later in college, it became clear that Charlotte was the more audacious of the two but academically underperformed compared to Lena.
Despite their parents’ efforts to uncover the reason, Charlotte remained silent.
In high school, Lena received a scholarship that carried her through her medical degree.
After Lena left home, Charlotte had a falling out with her parents and ended up living in a trailer park. She severed all ties with Lena, ignoring calls and missing her graduation.
Lena made several attempts to reconnect with her sister, but Charlotte pushed her further away each time.
Everything changed when Lena revealed her pregnancy. Charlotte’s attitude took a turn, and Lena deeply regretted sharing the news.
Tonight, she had called with disturbing news that Lena couldn’t bring herself to say out loud.
How could she admit that her younger sister wanted her dead?
Charlotte had poisoned her favorite food, left it in the house, and then took Lena’s kids, Alexander and Alexandria, out.
Lena was reluctant to accept it, but Charlotte’s fixation on her children made her dangerous—dangerous enough to consider killing their mother.
As Lena’s sister, she would be the one to gain custody of her niece and nephew, giving Charlotte the one thing Lena had that she didn’t.
Lena composed a text to Dominic:
“I probably shouldn’t tell you this, but I have to tell someone. I think my sister is trying to get rid of me so that she can have my children.”
Reading the message, Dominic’s heart sank.
He knew Charlotte could harm people, but this would be a new level of cruelty, even for her.
Lena was a doctor, and if she suspected the food had been poisoned, it most likely was.
The thought of Charlotte raising those twins terrified Dominic, because they might grow up to be worse psychos just than her.
If it were up to him, Charlotte should never have been allowed near them.
Charli’s self-destructive nature has finally caught up with her. Her knack for ruining relationships has made her notorious, and now, three men from her past — Matt, the bartender with a heart hardened by one too many of Charli’s games; Drew, the dealer whose business she’s jeopardized; and Jimmy, the apartment manager who can’t forget the chaos she brought — have united with a single grim purpose: to end her reign of disruption once and for all.
As the trio conspires under the cloak of darkness, their plans to eliminate Charli are met with unexpected twists. They are not the only ones trying to end her.
The line between hunter and hunted blurs.
Will the shadows claim Charli, or will she outsmart death itself?
