CHAPTER 5
A JOURNEY
I realized that just standing around in shock, covered in blood, would not help me at all. So slowly I made my way back to my room and changed out of my ruined school uniform into some sweatpants and a tank top. I then proceeded to call Ady. She answered almost immediately.
“Hey June. What’s up?”
I told her it was a long story and that if she could pick me up from a street near my house in about half an hour that would be great. She was okay with it but very curious. I packed the few belongings I owned and the letter from May. I hoped she would understand why I couldn’t keep going to school.
When Ady picked me up, it wasn’t her behind the wheel, it was her hot older sister, Evaya. I was still a mess by the time we got to her house, my mascara smeared and my eyes red and puffy from crying. Ady gave me some space and let me borrow her bathroom to clean up. It was past dinner time when Ady and I actually talked. She gently led me to her room where she had set up an air mattress.
“Okay, so what’s all this mystery stuff you’ve got going on?”
Fuck it. I might as well tell her. The worst that could happen was she would laugh in my face and kick me out. Adyson asked. I told her everything, and I mean everything. Inze Marie Gabby, Mom and the plate, foster care, living with Maya, May’s letter and her name on the uniform list, Maya and Autumn becoming demons and trying to murder me. I looked at Ady expecting her to be incredulous but all she did was say
“I’m in.” I gave her a confused expression. She snorted and explained.
“Well we’re going to try to find your sister and whoever the creepy mistress is, right? I’ll get Evaya in on it too. She’d be happy to help.”
I was speechless, this girl had known me for less than twenty-four hours, yet here she was, ready to risk her life for something that sounded completely and absolutely insane, to help me.
“I... Thanks.” When I went to bed, I fell asleep happy. Happy that somebody cared about me, happy that I was about to find my sister and happy that for once, I had a friend who believed what I had to say, and for now, that was going to be enough.
