The goddess threw her head back in grief

    and screamed.

    The pollen on the breeze froze in place.

    The tree branches stopped mid sway.

    The air, heavy like a held breath.

    All of it set in place around its altar, small before the goddess,

        the furred form,

            huddled on the side of the road.
