As the adrenaline from the battle with the guardian began to wane, we found ourselves in a moment of respite. Ella, ever curious, turned to me with a question that had been on her mind. "What do you think of the name 'TwinSight Bear' for that creature?"
My response was quick, a mixture of agreement and humor. "TwinSight Bear sounds fitting. Good choice, Ella." However, I couldn't resist a playful dig, adding, "Though I must say, '6 Eye Bear' does have a certain charm to it."
Ella laughed. "I think we'll stick with TwinSight Bear, although if i count its eyes on its hand that wouldn't quite be right would it."
The tranquility was short-lived, as a sudden storm rolled in with an intensity that caught us off guard. The storm seemed to approach faster than anything we had ever witnessed, as if the very elements were converging on our location.
We hurried to find shelter beneath a towering tree, its massive branches offering protection from the rain and wind. With Owen on the first lookout shift, we settled in for a long night. Amelia took charge, organizing us to set up a fire, providing warmth and a sense of security against the wild elements.
As Ella and I set up a temporary cutting station to make skewers that we could cook over the fire, I couldn't help but ask, "Ella, do you happen to have salt on you?" I said it half-jokingly, expecting a negative answer.
Surprisingly, Ella replied, "Well, I actually do." She reached into her box of rocks and metals, where she kept her collection of minerals, and took out a labeled section called "sodium chloride." She then handed me a clear salt rock. "What?! Why do you carry salt with you?" I asked in genuine confusion.
Ella explained, "It can be used in many things, and it's called sodium chloride." With my knife, she started to shave at the salt rock, letting the shavings fall onto the meat.
I couldn't help but tease her a bit, asking, "Wow, you wouldn't happen to have butter in that box, would you?"
Ella responded with humor, "What do I look like to you, a mobile kitchen?"
I chuckled. "So, that's a no?"
Ella confirmed with a grin, "Yes, that's a no. Why would I have butter?"
Finally done with our preparations, she set the meat above the fire and watched as it sizzled, the aroma of cooking meat filling the air. As the fire crackled, my mind revisited the battle with the TwinSight Bear. My contemplation took me through the moments when victory hung in the balance, when my reflexes had been the only thing keeping me alive. I realized the fine line that separated life from death, and I understood how close I was to death if I hadn't dodged that first boulder.
As the storm raged above us, we huddled together, each lost in our own thoughts. The flickering flames illuminated our faces, revealing expressions of exhaustion, determination, and reflection. But soon, my attention turned back to the fire as the meat looked ready to eat, having taken on a delicious brown tint and dripping with juices. The sight made my mouth water.
Taking my first bite, I found it quite chewy but undeniably delicious, especially with the added salt that Ella had provided. Compared to what we had been eating for the past week, this meal was a feast. Everyone else joined in, and they, too, were surprised at how good it was, savoring every bite.
"Hey, check this out," Amelia exclaimed, drawing our attention to a nearby stone. To our amazement, the stone levitated off the ground, morphing into various shapes as Amelia controlled it with her mind.
"Wow, that's incredible!" Ella exclaimed, her eyes wide with wonder as she watched the stone dance through the air.
Amelia grinned, clearly enjoying the display of her newfound abilities. "Watch this," she said, transforming the stone into a spear and effortlessly skewering a piece of meat from the slab.
"Convenient, isn't it?" she remarked, taking a bite of the meat.
I nodded in agreement, impressed by the practical application of her powers. "That's amazing," I remarked, marveling at the versatility of her abilities. "It could definitely come in handy."
As we continued to eat and converse, the atmosphere around us was filled with a sense of wonder. Relaxed and with our stomachs filled, my gaze lifted to the sky, my mind a whirlwind of thoughts. The forest's secrets were manifold, its challenges as daunting as its wonders. I contemplated the cores, the new abilities they granted, and the potential they held for our survival, as I wondered what kind of abilities I would have.
As the night progressed, the storm's fury intensified, its lightning and thunder weaving a relentless dance across the sky. The rhythmic pattern of rain soon lulled me into a deep sleep.
In my dreams, lightning flashed across an endless expanse, the sky above brimming with energy. Strange mist rolled in, seemingly materializing from thin air, obscuring my surroundings. The sound of distant screams pierced through the mist, filling the air with terror.
Amidst the chaos, a figure emerged from the mist, walking towards me. Its entire form was charred and scorched, making it difficult to discern any details. A voice echoed through the expanse, commanding me to follow the guide. Before I could react, the figure crumbled to ash obscuring my vision, leaving me disoriented.
Awakening to a sky ablaze with lightning, my attention shifted to the mark on my neck, which throbbed with searing pain. I instinctively reached for it, only to feel a burning sensation on my hand. Pulling it away, I discovered a void-like substance lingering on my palm, which then traveled down my arm to my leg and then fused with the injury on my leg, miraculously healing it.
Amazed by the sudden recovery, I inspected my hand and touched the back of my neck, finding it back to normal. A chilling voice echoed through the clearing, urging me to follow. Glancing around, I initially saw nothing until a familiar sight caught my eye—a shadowy figure standing at the edge of the tree line.
As my focus shifted to the figure, a thunderous crack of lightning split the sky, drawing my attention upward to a colossal bird-like creature flying over us, its form crackling with pure electricity.
The sudden burst of lightning startled everyone in the camp, jolting us from our slumber. The voice echoed in my mind once more, urging us to follow.
"We need to move!" I shouted, rallying everyone's attention.
Amelia glanced at me, her expression briefly surprised before she nodded in agreement. "Get packed up! Henry, help Atlas," she commanded, her voice cutting through the chaos.
"I'm fine, I can walk," I reassured her as I got to my feet.
She seemed momentarily stunned, but the crack of lightning behind us spurred us into action once more. Glancing back, I saw the massive lightning creature again, this time moving slower as if it sensed our presence.
As we moved through the forest, our eyes remained fixed on the horizon, where the storm's lightning still danced in its eerie patterns. Our pace quickened, but the relentless storm was never far behind. Its search area was adjusting and expanding as it zeroed in on our location.
As I scanned our surroundings, searching for any potential hiding spots, the figure caught my eye from the corner of my vision once again. Memories of encounters in the desert flooded back, where similar figures had appeared in the mist.
Feeling a surge of intuition, I trusted my gut and dashed towards the figure, only for it to vanish into thin air. With everyone following my lead, we sped through the forest, my eyes constantly darting to catch glimpses of the elusive shadow. The more I diverged from its initial location, the more it seemed to appear, urging me to redirect our path.
The storm's fury reached its crescendo, lightning cracking and booming as if heralding the arrival of something unnatural. My senses were on high alert, every pulse of electricity in the air a testament to the impending danger.
The nightmarish pursuit reached a climax as the lightning bird bore down on us, its ethereal form taking on a more defined, bird-like shape. My instincts kicked in, driving me to urge my companions forward even as we were met with a relentless onslaught of blinding light and crackling energy.
Then, in a terrifying moment, it locked on us and soared down towards us. Amelia, driven by her newfound abilities, attempted to create barriers of rock to impede the lightning bird's advance. The temporary reprieve allowed us to gain a few precious seconds as the bird slammed into the barrier, but the bird's power proved too overwhelming. The barriers sizzled and shattered under the relentless force of the lightning, leaving us exposed once more.
Just then, a bolt of lightning streaked towards us, striking Owen with a deafening crack. The surge of electricity paralyzed him instantly, his screams of agony piercing the air as he collapsed to the ground. Before we could react, the lightning bird swooped down with terrifying speed, engulfing Owen in a blaze that turned him to ash before our disbelieving eyes. Emily's cries of despair resonated through the night, her desperate attempt to reach Owen futile against the merciless force of nature.
Ella managed to save Emily from a similar fate, pulling her away from the deadly creature's path. Our desperation grew as we realized the futility of our efforts against a being that defied the laws of nature.
With the lightning bird in relentless pursuit, we found ourselves at the edge of an open field, its surface marked by swirling tears in space that appeared and disappeared erratically. The bizarre phenomenon presented a potential escape route, but the unknown dangers of these rifts were a risk we couldn't ignore.
Amelia's voice cut through the chaos, her urgency clear. "We have no choice! Into the field!"
As we sprinted toward the enigmatic tears, the force of nature closed in, its crackling energy growing more intense. A bolt of lightning streaked toward us, missing its intended target but hitting a tree with a deafening crash, obliterating the tree and sending splinters in all directions, some embedding into us.
We entered the field, our movements fueled by desperation, each tear in space a potential path to salvation. The lightning bird hesitated at the edge of the field, its immense power conflicting with the peculiar properties of the rifts.
Amidst the chaos, I witnessed a startling revelation—the bird's wing brushed against one of the rifts, causing it to vanish instantly. The phenomenon was like nothing I had seen. The bird's advance halted as it struggled to comprehend the new obstacle.
A mixture of fear and hope drove us forward as we navigated the field of rifts, our steps guided by a desperate instinct to survive. The bird, unable to anticipate the rifts' effects, decided to just dive right in to pursue us, like a starved dog towards prey.
The rifts performed a deadly waltz, their appearance and disappearance defying prediction. My eyes darted between the lightning bird and the rifts, each step fueling my determination to outmaneuver our supernatural pursuer.
One by one, we escaped the field, but I couldn't resist stealing a final glance at the creature. In that moment, a strange sensation washed over me, as if the ground had shifted beneath my feet. Confusion clouded my mind, and before I knew it, I was falling – a rip in space materializing beneath me.
Panic surged as I tumbled into the abyss, the world around me distorting into a surreal kaleidoscope of colors.
Time seemed to lose its meaning as I tumbled through the rift. A sense of disorientation and weightlessness enveloped me, and just as I thought I couldn't take any more, the chaos ceased, and darkness overtook my consciousness.
