15-On thin ice
Axel's pov
It's crazy to think I'm no longer single but I now actually have a boyfriend.
It's only been 2 days and I've just seen him once since then, but it still doesn't change that fact, I'm dating a guy.
Anyways, I don't know what I expected from having a boyfriend. It's not that much different than I thought, things between Shawn and I remain basically the same way.
The only difference is that I text him now and then. Since he's my boyfriend, I figured I could text him good morning messages and stuff. I mean Grace used to like that, so I figured Shawn would too, at least it seems like I was right so far.
Also, I noticed how it's funny that we're basically the same height, so when we kiss I don't have to look down. Oh well, I think I prefer that but it's too early to tell.
Regardless, as glad as I am to now have Shawn as my boyfriend, there was someone who just had to ruin my moment, yeah my dad.
The moment I came back from my date, my dad had the actual nerve to announce the wedding date so close to the date and asked me to find myself a date.
My dad is disgraceful, how dare he ask me to find a date saying it'll be a way for me to regain his respect? I know it'll never gain back his respect because I have no desire for that, yet I know he's serious about it.
It turns out that the wedding ceremony is to be held in 3 weeks, meaning it's on November 9th. I can't believe they had the nerve to plan everything behind my back.
So it's fair to say those past two days have been even more tense than usual in the house.
To my pleasure, my dad and his now fiancé aren't here, they are busy preparing for the wedding ceremony, I don't know what they are picking because I couldn't care less.
Regardless, as I am currently left all alone in my room, I've decided to practice with my guitar. That reminds me of the other day with Shawn.
As if he has a sixth sense, I've just received a text from the guy himself.
——————-
Turns out I got invited to Shawn's house on the pretext that we wouldn't get to see each other often.
I wasn't expecting that from him but regardless, I couldn't refuse since it's not like I have anything better to do anyways.
So, I take my skateboard and go downstairs to put my shoes on and then leave.
——————-
Once I arrived at Shawn's place, I don't think I expected to be interrogated about the safety of my skateboard by his dad Garrett but it happened nonetheless.
It still makes me smile remembering how Shawn interrupted the moment, displeased and then apologizing for his dad's invasive nature.
Anyway, coming back to his house reminds me of the last time I came but luckily his dad reassured me he was not mad at me. I wouldn't want his parents to hate me so soon in our relationship.
Regardless, after that moment, Shawn leads me to his room. We enter his room and even if I've only been here once I remember it from the last time. It really is similar to his personality.
I think he expected me to say something but I don't. This plunges us into an unsettling silence.
Then as if realizing it, he closes the door but it only makes things more awkward, well it's especially him, he seems to be mentally debating something.
I take notice of his gaze looking hesitantly below my eyes and I realize what he might be so worried about.
"Chill out, there's nothing to worry about, actually we might as well make out." He instantly turns scarlet red and my heart skips a beat, I then chuckle.
"Stop that..." Shawn says embarrassed and I smirk getting close to him.
"Stop what exactly?"
As I continue getting closer to him, he surprises me by tentatively closing the gap between us.
I take in his lips and I angle him a bit, that seems to calm down his internal crisis and he kisses me with more assurance.
The kiss doesn't last much longer as we stop to take a breath.
"Wow...that was..." He says a bit in wonder.
"Nice? Liked it?" I smile a bit teasingly and that causes him to crack a smile.
"Yeah..." He says whispery.
"Good, you'll have to get used to it, boyfriend." I tease him and he blushes yet again, which only makes me smile some more.
"Boyfriend...sometimes I can't believe that you actually are my boyfriend..." He says astonished and I frown curious.
"Really? You find it that hard to believe?"
"Mm"
"Oh well, I guess I'll have to remind you every day." I shrug yet smiling and he nudges me slightly.
"Stop..." I laugh and eventually can't help but do it too.
We laugh for a bit and eventually, the silence comes back yet again.
"Hey...you didn't tell me much the other day but what's it like back home...?" He suddenly says uneasily and that darkens my mood, it makes me think about the wedding situation.
Even if I usually don't like talking about my dad, I find myself weirdly wanting to explain everything to Shawn. So I do exactly that.
After I'm finished explaining, Shawn is notably astonished by that but his face softens concerned for me but I choose to not let it affect me.
"Oh, that's messed up. How can he ask that?"
"I know it's messed up but I can't do much about it," I say still feeling down as I stare at my shoes.
"Well, what if I were to accompany you that would fix that problem wouldn't it?" He surprises me and I look back up to him to see if he's kidding or not.
"Wait...that's actually not a bad idea...He just wants me to bring someone and since you're my boyfriend, you could be my date. Yeah, you know what? Screw my dad, that works."
I say thinking this through and he looks at me stupefied.
"Wait, you actually want that?" He says hesitantly.
"Yeah, why not? It's a good idea." I say confused.
"I was just joking, I didn't think you would take it seriously." He admits uneasy and that stops by train of thought.
A bit puzzled by that, I remain silent, hence the uncomfortable silence returns.
Eventually, I realized I needed to say something.
"Oh, I thought you meant it..."
"You actually want me to come out of all people?" He says flagger-blasted and unsure.
"Yeah, why not?"
"Are you sure it's a good idea? It's a big deal you know?" He says nervously and hesitantly.
"Well yeah, wait you don't want others to find out about us?"
"No, it's not necessarily that, it's just I've never gone to such a big event and...I doubt my dad would allow me to go..." He says his mood turning sorrowful.
"Oh, I kinda forgot about that. If your parents let you go, would you like to be my date?"
"I would feel bad letting you down...but I don't know."
"Ok, let's say I find a way to convince your parents will that be enough?"
"I guess, how big is that event?"
I try to give him a reasonable answer and reassure him by saying I'll be by his side during the wedding. Luckily, he cracks a smile.
He remains unsure, so I try to answer more of his questions and convince him to come with me.
Luckily, he's open to the idea but he says it's his parents the problem, they for sure won't let him go. I then repropose the idea of convincing his parents. Shawn still doesn't believe I'll sway them over such a big thing but I remain confident in my skills to charm his parents. This leads us to have a playful argument over it but eventually, it just turns into us bantering.
We continue to do so for a while laughing and I find that I actually find it quite pleasant. I didn't think Shawn had that side in him, even more the reason to like him. Oh...I really am getting attached to him and fast.
This rarely happens but maybe it's a good thing.
Regardless, time goes on and I eventually realize that it's dinner time and that I should probably leave.
"Hey, won't you eat dinner soon?" I ask.
"Yeah, why?"
"I should probably leave, I can't be staying here forever." His smile drops but it comes right back.
"Oh, ok. I didn't realize how fast time has gone by."
"Yeah, me neither." We both look at each other as I go near the door.
I decide to pull the trigger and just kiss Shawn.
He gets startled but gives in more smoothly.
"Ok, I guess that's my cue to leave."
"Yeah," He says his eyes downcast. Is he sad that I'm leaving? That's odd. I know we won't see each other freely but still...
I open the door, leave his room and he follows me. We go downstairs and I start taking my skateboard but right as I do so I get interrupted by someone else.
"Hey! You're that red-haired guy! Shawn's friend?" I turn around and come to face with Shawn's other dad, Brandon I believe.
"Uh, yeah sir?"
"Oh don't call me sir, just call me Brandon." He says pleasantly and I smile a bit in return.
"Ok,"
"So where you leaving?"
"Yeah, I didn't want to interrupt your dinner time."
"Nonsense! You should come to eat with us! The more the merrier!" His dad says over ecstatic and Shawn looks mortified.
"Are you sure, Brandon?" I say cringing a bit.
"Ah, yes, I'm sure my husband won't mind and that Shawn would like that." He winks at Shawn who only gets more mortified.
"Sure, if you insist."
I put back down my stuff and go next to Shawn.
"Speaking of dinner, it's almost ready so you might as well go to the dining table."
"Ok," I agree.
His dad goes to the kitchen and we stay back.
"I'm sorry about my dad...he too can be overbearing." He says still embarrassed.
"You really don't have to apologize for that, it's fine. I told you I could handle it, I've seen worse. Your parents are cool." I try to reassure him and seems to work as he is a bit astonished.
"You think so?"
"Yeah, you're lucky to have a happy family," I say plainly and that causes Shawn to make a concerned expression yet again. Luckily, he noticed now was not the time.
"Oh, well I'm glad you like my parents then."
"Yeah, let's go to the dining table."
"Yeah, I guess we should."
We walk side by side and as we enter the dining table, I first notice his younger sister at the dining table on her phone, then his dad Garrett finishing up the plates and not far there is his other dad.
I'm surprised to see that Jasper is not there but I guess we'll probably see them shortly.
We go to the table and decide to sit next to each other. Of course, his sister's eyes light up as she notices us despite her immense focus on her phone.
"Oh, it's that guy again. So he's eating with us again?" She says smirking devilishly. Ugh, she'll be a pain.
"Yeah, I am," I say and she seems to take this as an invitation to a competition because she stares me down.
"Hm, finally got together?" She smirks and Shawn flinches.
Gosh, that girl may only be 12 but she's quite bold.
Luckily, we are saved by Shawn's dad, Garrett.
"Oh hey Shawn, you're staying for dinner?" He questions me.
"Yeah, your husband said I could." As if the person in question overhead us, he answers.
"He's not kidding, I really invited him, I figured why not?" He says laid back as he comes to join us in the dining room. Shawn's dad Garrett gives him a knowing look.
"Hm, you always invite people so I'm not surprised, you're lucky I wanted that too." Oh? Shawn's other dad smirks.
"I knew you'd agree." He comes closer to Shawn's dad Garrett and they briefly kiss, shocking us.
"Hey, what's going on here? Oh hey, Axel." Jasper smirks open noticing me. Of course, they know...
"Nothing much, it's dinner time." Shawn's blond dad says a bit flustered.
They chat a bit but it doesn't take long before we are all sitting down.
"It seems like we have one extra today." Shawn's other dad grins and Jasper grins too.
"Thanks for letting me stay for dinner."
"No problem, feel free to come over more often." Shawn's dad Garrett says and everyone grins except Shawn. How awkward.
"Nice to know that I can." I smile.
Then the food gets shared between us.
"Jasmine, can you please pass me the bowl of salad?" Shawn's Dad Garrett says and it's visible that Jasper tenses at the word and that makes me realize it's the first I've heard their original name.
"Yeah..." Jasper reluctantly gives the bowl and that seems to surprise Shawn. Is it because it would be in Jasper's nature to argue against it? But who knows, Jasper didn't tell me they were out to their parents or not.
That awkward moment luckily gets forgotten but as we eat chatting between each other, it's quickly replaced by something else.
I noticed how Shawn seems to be in his thoughts and how he seems to be hesitating about something.
Curious, I pay attention to him and he looks at me too.
He looks around and then puts his hand on mine beneath the table. I'm a bit confused about what that means but it doesn't take me long to realize what he wants.
He's thinking about telling his parents if I'm not mistaken.
I look at him to be certain and when I believe I am, I nod at him.
"Hey...I have something on my mind." They all abruptly stop talking, the parents are visibly confused but Shawn's siblings appear to be smiling, curious too.
"You know how I said I liked someone and all...?" Wow...he's really gonna say that in front of everyone? I thought he wouldn't have the courage to do so.
"Ah, yes what about it?" His blond dad smiles softly.
"Um...well I have a boyfriend and it's..." He stalls unsure about it and he looks at me for reassurance, which I do by urging him to go on.
"And it's Axel."
They all look at us, parents surprised, the other two not so much.
"I knew it! Gosh, why did it take so long for you two to get together?" Shawn's sister says annoyed, rolling her eyes. Shawn looks at her unimpressed, and so do I.
"Wait, so you two are dating?" Shawn's Dad Brandon asks stunned.
"Yeah, it's pretty recent," I confirm suddenly feeling proud.
"I knew it, I had a feeling that Shawn was talking about you. Well, I'm glad that Shawn's first boyfriend is you." Shawn's other dad says and Shawn is shocked.
"How did you know?"
"I know you best, don't forget that Shawn." He smiles quite proudly of himself and Shawn gets a bit flustered.
"Also, don't forget about protection!" His other says and I cringe.
"Dad..." Shawn says more mortified.
"Brandon, they said it's pretty recent, they probably aren't at that stage yet. Though, to prevent that, from now on, whenever Axel comes over, leave the door open." His dad Garrett says and the other smirks.
And I thought it couldn't get worse...
Luckily, the rest of the dinner runs softly as if Shawn never broke out such a big confession.
Eventually, it came time for me to really leave.
I go close to the door and weirdly the whole family is there to see me leave.
"If you two are really boyfriend, you should kiss." The devil herself says and unfortunately for us, Jasper agrees.
"Yeah, come on. I've been waiting for this day when Shawn gets himself a boyfriend." Shawn blushes but I'm unfazed by it.
"Alice, Jasmine. Stop suggesting that." Shawn's blond says in a warning glare.
But as if I take it as I challenge, I come closer, lean myself a bit and close the distance between us shocking everyone.
Luckily, Shawn seemed eager for that too because he gave in and I smiled through it, liking the praise coming from Shawn's siblings.
Eventually, the kiss comes to an end.
"Well, that's my cue. Have a good night."
"You too Axel."
"Take care." Both Shawn's parents say.
"Bye" Shawn smiles shyly and I open the door leaving.
I close the door and smile as I'm outside facing the dark skies.
And then I head out in the dark with my skateboard.
