Oh, who am I you must be thinking?
Well… definitely not one of you that’s for sure. I’m sure you can guess given anything I do or how I feel severely affects your climate on planet Earth.

Indeed, it is I.
The one you call ‘Mother Nature’.

Also known as Gaia, Terra, Papa(tūānuku) or Great Goddess.
Grand, fantastical and highly illustrious names from humanity for thousands of years and I appreciate the reverence, really I do.

Oop! Stopped myself there in time.
One accidental typhoon today is quite enough I dare say.

However alas, my heart is heavy.
No one cares to think of how I feel or what’s going on, on this side of things.
Namely… the ever growing issue with my children.
The unruly four currently going through what you humans call ‘adolescence?’
That period of life where they seek their own dominance, independence and need to express themselves as freely as they like…

Which is a problem, because I birthed my daughters to work in collective harmony with each other. Granting them different dominions of earth exclusively for them to focus on. They learnt how to dance together, how to connect the melody of their season to blend to the other seamlessly, so that the transition is subtle, mysterious and peaceful to human eyes.
For centuries, this was mostly fine… when they were children. The occasional tantrum, hiccup, accident here and there of course but that can’t be helped with young ones.

They frolicked, played and loved their unique melodies and essence.
How old are they you ask?

Why my dear human, nothing that can be compared to your ridiculously short mortal existence. One solar cycle of your planet doesn’t even come close to the fastest speed that you can record which is light, I believe.

No no, we are what you call ‘timeless’ but we do evolve and sadly with their ever growing awareness of the human world, humanity in a mere 100 years from the early 20th century have gained unprecedented growth, science, technology and sadly… weaponry.

Greed, bottomless, soul-eradicating greed is stripping away the balance of the flora and fauna and all are suffering at the hands of a few.

I am of course angry, but my daughters?
Aside from their own bickering and disharmony with their dances and melody transferences, they’ve learnt a little too well from human emotions.

Particularly the two polar opposites, Winter and Summer.

Because of the power of your biggest star, Summer was already born the strongest of my children and so I had placed earth under a prolonged state of ice for Winter to focus on and placed Spring and Autumn between them to pacify both and help with their melody transference.

However, humanity was created with many flaws, one being their love of self destruction at the sacrifice of millions of their own. No other species easily delights in wiping out their own than the human race, I do quite despair over the centuries honestly.

They… you all are quite emotionally weak, especially in the face of power, greed and pleasure. The abnormal growth of your technologies and science has caused great environmental damage to the extent that the very ozone layer I designed to protect your air had been injured and left with a great hole.

This meant your star could penetrate your atmosphere much easier and sure enough, Summer noticed her essence was resonating stronger than usual… and was the first to break the quadruple harmony.

She has became quite drunk with power and started to radiate too strongly that her belligerence has in the worst cases overwhelmed Spring and Autumn and drowned out their melodies.
Winter and Summer were never meant to sing or dance together but they are dangerously close to doing so in some parts of the world, it’s quite the predicament.

Why don’t I do something about it?
Oh of course I do, but I can only do so much.

They are very much a part of me but I am quite busy with trying to heal the never-ending damage from humans on their own flora and fauna, my role is maintaining balance.

If I subjugate my daughters as I’d like to, with their recent belligerent spirits, humanity would surely be wiped. I raise my voice and your earth shakes, tectonic plates slip and all chaos ensues. I’m sure you’ve noticed the increase in earthquakes over the last decade.
When I focus on scolding both Summer and Winter at the same time, the mix of hot and cold air clashing in your atmosphere causes the most intense thunder and lightning storms, at times tornadoes and floods are borne from it.
Our anger causes your deaths and so easily do you all die, I can’t help but feel sorry for you all.

So I try to control my emotions.
And I continue to discipline my boisterous daughters to not abandon their melody transferences. To properly let Spring and Autumn transition between Winter and Summer and to let their softer, younger sisters have their adequate length of time too.

The result… well… you’ve seen the results.

Summer is quite powerful and has quite frankly given up on humanity.
In a way, she channels my anger as well as the power of your biggest star, so you humans will truly need to work together to reduce the pollution, repair your ozone layer, reforest your rainforests and clean up the oceans. I believe you’ve already been feeling the effects of your planet warming up at unnatural speeds.
Summer calls it ‘sweet, slow, simmering torture…’

*shakes Her head*
I won’t sigh this time.

However, I truly hope you can reverse the damage. I’m sure then my daughters will settle and not be so extreme with your weather systems and climates.
As much as I’d like a holiday, skip off to another planet and relax, I’d happily settle for a healthier balance of flora and fauna on Earth.
Less emotional upheaval, more peace and natural serenity for all.
