In the mist of sleep, I hear a noise, which gets louder every second until I open my eyes. Once I wake up, I turn off the alarm, stretch my body and get out of bed. I take a T-shirt out of my closet; I take my laptop out of the room and my backpack on the way to the dining room. As I tried to leave my things at the table I noticed it; stood by the table, that package that came after my nightmare; I gave a strong sigh and prepared everything to take classes.
Once with everything settled, I saw the time and when I noticed that I had time before class I went to the kitchen to prepare something for breakfast. While in the kitchen I started thinking about that package, I had completely forgotten it due to recent events, I wondered what might be inside. The teacher’s voice pulled me out of my thoughts, causing me to quickly grab my plate and sit in front of the laptop.
My classes passed with complete tranquility; and although I was paying enough attention to take notes, from time to time I looked up from the screen and observed the package on the other side of the table questioning its contents.
After a few classes I stretched on my seat, the tiredness of staying in the same position for so long was appearing, making me miss my runs to try to get to the next classroom on time. Then I heard Julian’s voice, returned my attention to the screen asking me about Professor Tadeo. "I thank you for your work last week. I remind you that Professor Montenegro will return until next week. At the moment I would appreciate it if you could patch the following copies and work on the material that the teacher left" he said and left the classroom. Shortly after, I got an email from Julián where he shared the material he gave in class.
I stayed in the dining room for another while doing all the work of the day before and what I had left to do today. Once I sent the last email, I turned off my laptop, getting up from the seat and heading to the kitchen to prepare my food. I made a quick sandwich and stayed in the kitchen next to the bar staring at the package sitting on the dining table. Once I finished eating, I washed my dishes, dried them and arranged them. Then slowly I went to the package.
Once I was in front of that package, I took a deep breath as I laid my hands on it. Calmly I lowered my gaze and moved my hands of place; observe the big box, lifting it from the table and shaking it a little to guess what could be inside. After a while I wanted to see the label to remember who and when had sent me that. Then when I read the label and saw my mother’s name, I turned pale; I searched my head to remember when the package arrived. After a while I realized that it arrived in the morning before I was informed of my mother’s condition. Then, before opening that box, I started looking for the folder the doctor gave me.
I had made a mess in my place before I was able to find the folder, then I dropped on the floor and started reading every paper inside the folder. Little by little the alarms inside me started ringing loudly. I had looked for that to calm down about the date the package arrived, but instead of finding some kind of peace, I just began to fill myself with anxiety.
After a while I finished reading everything, the information in those papers was even worse than the doctor had made it sound when he explained it. I understood that my mother’s condition had gone into decline and that that day they only called me because there was no hope for her anymore. Having the dates of the reports in mind I went to the package and focused on the label about it. Then I saw it, the date of dispatch was before... THAT event.
Laughter echoed in the air, filling me with fear and paralyzing me in the instant. That person illuminated by the moon saw me with its eyes exorbitant while throwing blows to the ground. Its figure was torn, dirty and almost deformed, giving a feeling of seeing something about natural. Tears fell from, looking at that scene, making my heart feel heavy and aching. I wanted wholeheartedly to run and hug it, but my body wouldn’t respond. I stood there, heartbroken watching as the sirens echoed in the distance.
My eyes were overflowing with tears as I held the box in my hands. I silently let my tears fall as I searched with what to open the package. It took a long time to find a cutter, I took the box between my hands and with a trembling pulse I began to open it. I felt as the air was lacking as the package was opened; at the end I put my gaze on the yellow envelope that had handwritten and with big letter my name. The image of that letter brought up several memories of my mother writing letters with a delicate smile and empty look.
Take the letter nervously in my hands, and leaving the box with the rest of its contents without checking, walked to my room. I kept my eyes on that paper as I settled between my pillows trying to find some security before I started reading. Once settled I began to tear the yellow envelope I was holding. I slowly took out the letter on flowered paper that was inside and sighed softly as I read: "Dear Raúl..."
