"Alright that's it", she said carefully pulling out the syringe of the boy's arm, "I know it might be painful but you have to put up with it, otherwise I won't be able to help you."
The boy nodded and looked at the ground, as to not let them see the tears in his eyes. After looking at him a bit closer the woman noticed that his hair seemed to show a hint of red, which it shouldn't after only one small dose.
"You can lie down over there", she said pointing at a small room attached to the end of the lab.
The boy nodded and walked over to the room with staggering steps, his heart beating way too fast over so little exertion.
"Who is he?", the woman asked watching the boy walk towards the bed.
"Your new volunteer", the man said with a stern expression.
"Are you taking me for a fool? There's no way a little kid like that would agree to something like this!", she said in a low voice.
"He would if it meant making his mother happy", answered the man watching the kid lie down.
"There's no way that any mother would agree to put her child up for something like this!", and just as these words left her mouth she regretted speaking up. There was no way for her to get away unscathed after saying something like this.
"Are you saying that what we're doing is wrong?", he asked with a voice that send chills down her spine.
Instead of answering she looked at the ground keeping quiet not wanting to anger him even more, but her actions seemed to have the opposite efect of what she had hoped for.
"Are you ignoring me?", he asked now moving closer to her.
"No, Sir."
"Then answer me. Do you think what we're doing is wrong?"
"It's not that Sir, I just don't think any mother would want to risk losing her child", she said still staring at the ground.
"If that's the case you better make sure he stays alive", he said patting her shoulder, "unlike his predecessors."
"Yes, Sir", she said like he wanted her to, but in her mind she could only think of how he would be begging her to stop if he was in their place. This wasn't the first time she thought something like this, but this was the first time she felt like she truly meant it.
~And why shouldn't I?~, she asked herself, ~He's the one who caused all their deaths, so why do I have to bear the burden that comes with them? He's the one pressuring Claude on every step and decision he makes! If it wasn't for him many aspects in our everyday lifes would be better, no in fact everything would be better if he didn't exist.~
Yet she didn't do or say anything, because truth be told she was probably just as bad as him if not even worse.
After he left she went ahead and filled the syringes with a new drug she had recently made, before calling for one of the volunteers.
~If they're going to die anyway I might as well make as much use of them as possible~, she thought injecting him the first dosis of her new drug.
And with that a new series of secret experiments began causing the deaths of numerous of the volunteers along the way.
At the end only one was left who had survived and she'd like to think it was because of her extra care, but truth be told the reason he was able to survive for so lon was that his blood was able to absorb the drug without causing any major disabilities, in fact his physical abilities started to surpass those of the average humans, but at the same time his eyes lost their once energetic and happy shine.
As time passed everything around her changed, everything but her. She was the only one remaining stuck in the events of the past. People came and went and at the same time the seasons started changing until one spring the family head died of unknown reasons, even the doctor of the mansion couldn't figure out what caused his sudden death and so everyone moved on.
But unlike her expectations nothing had changed for the better, in fact the mansion was getting more quiet by the second and it became extremely rare to see someone smiling around here let alone laughing.
"Can I ask you a question Miss?", asked the boy who was sitting on the table.
"Of course, what do you want to know?", said the woman inspecting his left arm.
"Is my mother alright? She stopped writing me a few weeks ago."
"I'm sure your mother will start writing you again soon, she was probably just busy with work", the woman answered.
She had completely forgotten to check the mail in the past few weeks, as she had been busy completing the reports about the experiments.
After the old family head's death she was made chief scientist and had to lead numerous experiments, so she was barely able to catch up with this one. Not that it was a problem as the experiment would be completed pretty soon and by the looks of it it was a success.
She had created what they had thought to be impossible, yet she didn't feel a sense of pride nor was she sure that it was truly for the best for her to tell them about the news. It was the first time she ever felt worried about revealing the results of an experiment that was a success, but she couldn't help but wonder what would happen to him if it turned out that he truly had the ability to render them immortal.
"I've been feeling a lot better as of late", the boy said looking at her with hope filled eyes.
"I noticed", she meant somewhat confused as to what he was hinting at.
"So- well I was wondering, if maybe I could go outside for a bit", he said playing with his hands, showing how nervous he was.
"Sure why not?", she said with a smile on her face.
A.N.G.E.L. was a project in which a persons DNA was changed in a way that they would grant supernatural beings immortality. After countless research and experiments there was a succesfull case of the A.N.G.E.L. project. But soon both the scientist and the only succesful case of the experiment disappeared without leaving a trace.
